My original 99 Tourers speedo just clicked 117K and I noticed the speedo needle is bouncing at slow speed.

Evens out around 15-20 mph.

So, I figure it's one of three things, sending gears, cable or speedo unit.

Probably the speedo unit, which I'm hoping it isn't.  I like having the original mileage to show off Smiley

Anyone been there, done that?

Remove the cable and pull it from the outer sleeve. Should be obvious if it's the cable

I know on old cars, when the speedo bounces, usually the cable just needs greased. Slide it out of sleaze, I try to flush with WD-40, then grease and return. Good luck

And sometimes, it's the part of the speedo the cable fits into and spins. Just a drop of light oil where it slides against the case will take care of it. My old ('70) CB450 gauges need this every few years.

Yeah, that's the plan, just haven't got to it yet.  Check the easy stuff first.

I had time to post about it though  uglystupid2  Roll Eyes

When you change the front tire do you clean the old grease out of the speedo drive unit and check the condition of the two thin washers under the white plastic gear?  The worm gear (inside the hub which the cable attaches to externally) can get some crud buildup too.

Make sure to apply new grease to the gears and washers before re-installing the speedo drive unit.

Good luck.  Some spray lube should get you going until you remove the front wheel and clean the speedo drive.

thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I've had that one apart, cleaned and regreased, I don't know, about 8 or 9 times.

I'll report my findings when I get the time to check it out.
