Author Topic: Gear sensor for the Valk...  (Read 5256 times)

Does anyone have an idea how a simple gear sensor could be rigged for a standard Valk? I have heard of computer speedos that compare speed to rpm to display the gear number.

IMO, it would be helpful just to have a indicator light for top gear.

Thanks for any thoughts...

I check by applying light pressure to the shifter.  If it moves easily, it is in 5th.

Mike,

I had the same issues until I started lifting up on the gear shifter with my foot. If it is in high gear there will be an inch or more of slack until it stops. If it is in a lower gear, the lever will only move slightly (maybe a half inch or so) letting you know that there is another gear to go.

I don't know if it's just my girl... but, depending on the gear, the tranny sounds a little different. 5th really whines, 4th has a different whine, and 3rd... she just goes!

Here is the thread where this was discussed last March:

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,1476.0.html

A google or ebay search will locate some generic indicators.

For me, I know I am in fifth when my speed is just a little over double the RPMs (ignoring the last two zeros).  If the RPMs are 3500 and I'm just over 70 mph, I'm in fifth.

Thanks for the replies and the link!

I once rode my Suzuki VS800 about 10 miles @ 80-90 mph in 4th gear! crazy2 i was making a run from Stockbridge, GA up to the Dragon trying to catch up with a group. Wouldn't want to punish my prized Valk like that!

Hello

I'm working on a gear indicator for the valkyrie.
It will have a analog indicator.
I will try to make it look like this: http://members.home.nl/joop.angelier/download/Versnellings%20indicator%20Valkyrie/Foto%27s/voorkant%20meter.jpg

The electronics will look like this: http://members.home.nl/joop.angelier/download/Versnellings%20indicator%20Valkyrie/Schema/schema.jpg
It works with a sensor on the rear wheel for speed and the ignition pulses for rpm.

I hope to have it working in a few month's.

I can make some more if somebody wants one to.

Greetings Joop

a lot of work involved in just the electronics.  Looks like you may have used an old tach for the indicator.

It's a photo-shoped tach.
I'm going to use a standard 52mm voltmeter (brand autostyle)
and disigne a front that looks like the meters on the valkyrie
It will take some time to finish but i can do this.
I made one for my Honda Shadow but it had a digital display.
http://members.home.nl/joop.angelier/download/Versnellings%20indicator%20Shadow/printen.jpg
But you cant read a digital display when the sun is shining on it.
So its going to be a analog one.
The scematic is not compleetly ok at his moment.
I will have to do some re-disigning.

Joop

I saw a Boom trike recently with a nice infill between the two clocks that might look nice with some of your electronics in it and still leave room for a fuel gauge for the IS tanked and also various warning lights and possibly your indicator alarm. I have contacted Boom to see if they will just supply a shell and am awaiting a reply. What do you think? Might have room for an LCD display that could do the gear shifter and a clock and if you are reading the speedo input a digital speedo. Lots of ideas but I lack some of the electrical skills.

Hello Colin

I'm going to use a analog voltmeter and a chroom cup
and turn the voltmeter into a gear indicator.
The voltmeter is mounted to the metal strip on the windshield.
The voltmeter and the chroom cup are from autostyle.
Look at the pictures here:

http://members.home.nl/joop.angelier/download/Versnellings%20indicator%20Valkyrie/Foto%27s/

So the electronics will have a analog output (voltage)
Its not possible to use a digital display.
I think a display is to modern for a valkyrie.

I think that you are probably right with digital being too modern for a Valk, the retro analogue sounds good. Can you supply just the housing? If so can you let me have a price and its size please?

Digital is not bad if you can get small enough displays (5.5 mm digit height).  I went digital when I built my volt and temp gages.

Hi Joop

I am very interested by your gear indicator.
But my knowledge in elctronics is too poor to help you.
If components are not so expensive I'll take one.

Helo John

Im still working on it.
The first thing to do is correcting the schematic disign so that it works better.
Then making a prototype and testing it.
After that i have to disigne the PCB and order them.
This will all take some time.
I wil try to get it finished at the beginning of next year.
I will let you know the progress.

Joop sent me the Gear Indicator a few days ago.
It's exactly what I was  looking for. Great design, very useful, and easy to mount and connect (between 3 and 4 hours).

I always seem to need it while I'm at a light.  A "you're still in second, idiot!" gauge.  An RPM based gauge won't help there, unfortunately.
Has anyone seen something that reads directly off the gear positions?

If it would be possible i would have done it that way.
That would have been so mutch easyer.
Some bike's do have it , but they have switches inside the gearbox.
It can be done with a switch on the outside but i don't think that it will be reliable.

It's 150 euro.
Thats about 200 dollar.
I know its not cheap but it's handmade.
It's not mass produced.
It will take me a hole day to make one.
But there are only two by now.
Mine and Jean-Pierre's.
4 are reserved.
I'm making only 10.
Nobody in America has one.

I just read over your how it worked and looked at your production. I think it is worth the cost.  Good luck with it. I think you have a  winner. I like it much better then the digital ones.  Looks very well made.

I did a 4 days ride last week.
I was very happy with my gear indicator, specially when riding slowly in mountain or listening to the MP3 music system in the helmet... Roll Eyes cooldude
