Hello everyone, need some help. My ‘98 STD. GL1500C is fresh off a carb and fuel rail rebuild. Checked and or replaced whatever needed it. Now I fired the old girl up and she’s idling very high 3000 rpm. Raw fuel is blowing out 3 cylinders (I have 2 Brothers 6/6 pipes) and she’s backfiring like crazy. What did I do wrong? What should I be doing to fix this mess? Thanks for anY and all thoughts and advice.

Sounds like you have some stuck floats.
If so service those carbs again and bench test with fuel before mounting on the bike.

Hey Bob, did you take the carbs off,  separate and rebuild them yourself, or have someone else do it for you. If you have the knowledge and expertise that you did it yourself, then you need to do it again and look for your mistakes.  If someone else did it, they still need to come back off, but you may need a different re-builder to sort it out for you.  There are no easy answers for this one brother.

This is from my response to a different post:
Something else to check with the carbs upside down. The float valves are spring loaded. Gently push down on the float until you meet resistance. Make sure that the float is not hitting the carb body.  It does happen especially running ethanol. The floats can become warped and deformed, partially due to the ethanol in our gas. If this has happened, you need to replace the floats.

Ok guys, here’s an update. It turns out I had really bad gas in the tank. Drained it and filled with fresh gas and it’s running great except that the idle is 2200. I’m thinking that when I rebuilt the carbs I forgot that I had TBR 6/6 pipes and they need non-stock jets. I put oem jets in when I rebuilt them. So... does anyone know what jets I should put in for my pipes and where I can get them?

I hope that everything is good, does not really sound like something that bad gas would cause. More like you had three floats not shutting off the gas and now they are. Keep watching it!

My understanding is that you do not need to re-jet for cobra pipes. But the stock jets are 35’s and some go to 38’s if they feel they need to enrich the mixture. You can get them here: http://jetsrus.com/a_jet_kit_street/honda_1500_valkyrie.htm
Also, there is a large screw between carbs 1 and 3 on the right side of your bike. It is the idle adjust screw. Turn your ccw several times and see if the idle comes down. Might be that simple.

Don't mix the needs for Cobras and TBRs.  They're completely different.  Cobras sometimes need re-jetting but mostly for those running without baffles.  TBRs don't need re-jetting.

First thing you should solve is the stuck float problem. Probably have some bad needle valves. You are just asking for a hydrolock if your floats keep sticking.
