put em on yourself, not that hard.........

David, that is the new era of auto parts store help.

NONE of them have ever had any need to go search for a part or part #.

If it ain't in the firkin computer they don't have it ,can't order it or even stock it.

Now, if the truth of the matter should happen to come up, they got about 6 sets in the back room and don't even know it.

That happened to us at the shop about 3 weeks ago.   This one supplier we have bought from for about 25 years retired.    They hired a new guy to fill his place.    We had ordered some parts and they came in the day of his retirement.  He called and said so.

2 days later we went in to pick them up.   Sorry sir, we no stock that item.  I said I know, that is the reason I'm here now, it came in.

My computer says we can't order it so how do you know it came in.  Told him a birdie told me.   He got a dumb look on his face and said if you think you can find it, come on back and look........

Walked around the corner to the Special Order bin and it was laying on top.     He did not know how to bill me for it cause he didn't have it in his computer...........  His boss is still waiting to see what he does before he gets fired............

No kidding. Everytime I go to the Autozone or Oreillys

and I say "I need an alternator for a 2004 F-150" ,

the guy says "2 Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel Drive"

I say, "it's an alternator."

he says "Sir, I can't look up the part unless you tell me if it's 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive."

I say "is the answer any different for a 2 wheel drive vs a 4 wheel drive?"

he says "I don't know."

I leave and go to NAPA. (They still look up parts in a non-ridiculous manner)

You'd think it'd be a requirement to work at an auto parts store to have some kind of knowledge about car parts... guess that's not a hiring requirement someplaces. Wanna get mad? Go hang out at the parts store (autozone mostly) and listen to those guys diagnose complex car problems willy nilly, while these unknowing people shell out money for parts they may or may not need.... they ain't all like that, but alot of em around here are.

Oh, and for the Original Poster... if it's just shocks, they'd take like 30 minutes to swap out. If it's coilovers or struts, I'd take it to the shop, they are a PITA without the right tools.

Same here.  Sears, Kmart.........the same thing now.  I did let Sear fix a ratchet last year.  I hate going into a store where they work on commission.

I stopped going to shops unless it’s for something big like the tranny or engine rebuild.  Anything else I do myself.  It all started when I was a teenager and I guy I knew went to get his oil changed and they didn’t have the sense to tighten the oil plug or filter.  They both vibrated off in 70 miles.

Last spring I needed to buy two batteries, one for my Valk and one for Pams Goldwing. My buddy Kickstand came with me to one of the largest sears store in metro Detroit. We walked into the garage and there was no one there, then we walked into the Automotive Sales department. The sales department was empty,....strange,....no one. We waited at least fifteen minutes and still there were no sales associates or technicians in the automotive dept.

We then went to the lawn and garden/tool department and asked if they knew when the people in the automotive department would be back. We were told that were cutbacks in staffing and that most of the time there is no one in that dept.  And we would be lucky to find anyone that day.

Well, I was bound to get at least one battery (for my Valk at least), and I started to wander through the the garage area yelling quite loudly that I needed help! After about five minutes a tech surfaced (quite perturbed no less) and took his sweet old time looking up and getting my battery.

He then told me what their sale price was for the GW battery. My jaw about hit the floor when he said $105.00. My battery was $79.95. for the Valk. OK fair enough for the Valk, but I was never going to pat 100+ for the other.

Found a place the next day that had a gell cell battery for the GW for $79.95

If they don't have them they can order them from something they call TA.  Don't be too hard on the guy answering the phone....the turn over rate at Sear's auto centers for the sales counter people is about 100% every three months.  They only pay $6.00 per hour and even with commissions their top performers earn about $12 per hour.  Most of the counter help are making about $8 per hour.  Napa starts their counter help at $10 per hour before commissions and bonuses.  Until Sear's puts their focus back on the customer and is willing to pay a living wage they will never get any good help.  The back shop is not much better.  Our Sear's in town is constantly running ads for help wanted.  In this economy...if you cant keep help that tells you something.

Where you live has a lot to do with how hard those bolts come off.  In Indiana, with the salt and all, it's hard.

I had the shocks replaced on the Miata which is a hard job, spring compressors, etc.  A good tech who rides motorcycles did the job for me.  Every bolt came off easy.  The Miata has never been driven in Indiana's winter weather so no corrosion from all that salt.

As far as service these days, Sears, Autozone, Walmart, etc seem to have help that know it all but know nothing.

I went into a Hire's (local car parts chain) years ago when I was rebuilding an engine. Asked the Kid behind the counter for Plastigage. He gave me this HUH looks. "Now for you guys that don't know Plastigage is a poor mans micrometer. Its a thin plastic wire. You put it on a crank bearing, install the cap and torque it. Take the cap off and measure the amount of "crush" it has. That tells you the clearance on the bearing." He had no idea what I was asking for.  A manager finally asked me if I wanted red or green and he told the kid where to find it.

Another thing that iritates the Hell out of me is when someone takes there car to Autozone to have them scan the system for codes and then tells them for instance there cam sensor is bad. We had a woman do this a few years ago. Autozone told her she had a bad Cam sensor on her Montana van. She came to us to have it replaced. The service writer told her that the code means THAT circuit has the trouble NOT necessarily the sensor. She said she wanted the sensor replaced anyway because they said it was bad. He said OK but if the sensor does not fix it than she will have to pay additional diagnosis time to find that cause. When the tech got it and removed the sensor he thought he would just do a little more checking. Sure enough the Magnet that is on the Cam gear in the front cover had fallen off. The sensor was OK. She had us make the repairs. I bet she never does that again.

I always wanted to go into a parts place and ask for a Camshaft and Lifters for a 1982 Mazda RX7 and see what they do.......That would be good for a laugh........

Want a better one Mark.

We use about 3 different suppliers for our parts.    They all know this and are willing to give us part #'s to use when we call back if the customer says go.

3 or 4 weeks ago I was on the trail of a sensor for the ABS system.

Got on the phone and made my calls, got a part # at each one, told them I'd return if the customer said go.

Called my customer with the price and he said do it.

Called back to order it up and for them to deliver it.

Gave the guy the part # and he politely informed me he had to have the year and make of vehicle  so as to get it out of stock.

YES SIR, I went off on him and told him I wanted to talk to his manager NOW.   To make a long story short, his manager just walked in the overhead door at the shop.    I handed him another phone & motioned to only listen.     He listened as I tried to get my part.     Finally he had enough and asked to talk to Jake.  Jake is the #2 in command.

He told Jake to do 2 things, get the firkin part in route to me and fire that SOB before I get back................     NO more problems right now.

When I lived in Allentown, PA I went a parts store called National Auto Parts.  At the time, they were running ads on the radio all the time about how their employees know cars and parts and would feature a customer asking for some obscure engine part or whatever and the employee responding with an equally obscure clarification question...like he knows exactly what the guy is asking for.  Well, lets just say that at my local National Auto Parts store, the help wasn't quite so knowledgeable.  I went in and was looking at the one rack with all the sealants on it.  Well, an employee asks if he can help me find something.  I said yeah...I need some blue Lock-Tite.  He looks at me and, with a straight face, asks what kind of car it was for.  I just let him know I would find it myself.

You think thats bad? I was trying to buy a blower belt, I gave the guy the belt number, he said "what is it for" I told him not to worry about that just walk back to the belts and find that number. Again "whats it for" well... it's for a motorcycle... "we don't have motorcycle belts" I said JUST GO LOOK FOR THIS NUMBER!!!, he walked back and found the belt. He was mumbling something about "how was I supposed to know we had motorcycle belts?" all the while he was taking my money.

I went into O'Riellys looking for an 1156A bulb.  Now most people you would think would know what an 1156A bulb is.  This guy...looked older than me, keeps asking "what is it for"?  Finally I tell him it was for a motorcycle.  He says, you'll probably have better luck finding it at a motorcycle shop. uglystupid2  Can you believe it?  Oh, they didn't carry the bulb.  Got thinking....semi trailers have about a dozen or so of them bulbs, so went to the truck stop and got it.

I went to my local Canadian Tire parts counter and asked the young woman what they had for rear brake cylinders or rebuild kits for my 1980 GMC half ton.  Well she needed me to explain what a brake cylinder was, which I was doing as an older coworker walks up and helps her find the parts.  It turned out they didn't have kits in stock, but they did have two different brands (and prices) of cylinders.  I ask about the difference between the two, and before her coworker has a chance to answer, she (who 3 minutes earlier didn't know what a brake cylinder was) says, "the more expensive one is better quality."  Since she's now the expert, I ask her what makes it better quality.  She answers by trying to explain what the word "quality" means, so I raise my eyebrows at the coworker, then interrupt her, saying, "I know what the definition of the word 'quality' is, so if you can't explain an advantage to the more expensive part, just give me two of the cheaper ones."
