Is the pingle the only alternative to the OEM petcock? I’d like to see what’s out there before I decide.
TIA!

Some people use a Golan.

I haven't used it, but like Rob said, there's the Golan. Reviews seem positive.  https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0050D9IHS/?coliid=I2OPF1Y29W1T6N&colid=229LI4BKBACV&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

The only downside that I've heard of is that the filter screen on the Golan is a little large in diameter, leading to some having trouble installing it as-is. Some have removed the screen and used an inline filter. Others have slightly enlarged the hole in the tank. Some have had no trouble at all. I guess you get what you get.

Burn me at a cross. I used A Harley Davidson petcock. Cost $19.95. Was not able to use the in tank filter.

Interesting. I've never heard of that. The threads are the correct metric ?

Looking at the Golan, very similar to the Pingle. With that in mind, does not seem to be any advantage to using it. Lot of riders and a lot of miles on that Pingle. Tried and true so to speak.
The out of the way location of the control lever on the Pingle has never been an issue for me. Does not matter whether I am bare handed or gauntlet cold weather glove handed. @ 56yo my biggest problem is remembering which way on and reserve is  uglystupid2 ! Hindsight, I wish I would have increased (did mod) the length of reserve tube. Wow is reserve short on miles! I simply watch my odometer. I probably am making more motion potion stops than I need to but, breaks are nice to. If I'm in a hurry on my ride, probably not enjoying it.

I had trouble getting a petcock for my 8n that didn't leak past the sediment bowl
or leak into the carburetor even when the sediment bowl valve was screwed
all the way in. So I replaced it with a brass ball valve. I think it would be cool to have a
giant handle like that on a Valkyrie.

I found this on the net I don't know if it's any good but it is cheap.

I have a Golan on my bike for many years. No issues at all. I also installed a high quality inline filter since the petock one is just a basic screen.

Hi NoGrey!

Regarding alternatives to the $100 Honda petcock:

I installed a K&L brand #18-4161 petcock on my '99 Interstate last September.
link to K&L's website:     https://www.klsupply.com/carb-fuel/fuel-petcocks.asp
K&L lists it on their website as for the Valkyrie.

It is a made-in-Japan aftermarket valve that appears to be a close copy of the Honda valve.
It appears to have 2 diaphrams (one for vacuum and the other for fuel) with the safety 'vent to atmosphere' weep hole like the Honda valve.
This is NOT the single-diaphram design of the Chinese copies!
However, I did not take it apart to examine the internal construction.

I found it on Ebay for about $60.

Typical Ebay listing as of 03 Feb 2019:
Link:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-GL1500-C-CD-CY-Valkyrie-1997-2003-Fuel-Petcock-Gas-Tank-Valve-K-L-18-4161/142418029821?epid=202863331&hash=item2128c6acfd:g:J3QAAOSwYDVZ3m8L:rk:1:pf:0

It's been working fine.... so far!

I hope this helps!

Perfect timing; I just found an intake manifold FULL of fuel, even after a petcock rebuild. Not taking any chances - one hydrolock teardown is enough for me.
Thanks for the info everyone.

Mine came with a Pingle and once I learned the settings, no issues whatsoever.
