Fine (4-0000) wool of any kind (steel or bronze) with a cleaner wax as a cleaner and lubricant. Leaves a nice waxed shine also, with some protection until it burns off. Also will remove fine surface rust.

For tar a "careful' application of gas will remove, Kerosene is safer but does not work as well. XXX wool also helps with these, if it is baked on.

"careful" = cold pipes and engine, well ventilated, NO smoking, etc.

Cleaner wax takes more effort than gas/kerosene but requires no time for clean up (soap/water) and application of wax afterward.

So I use cleaner/wax/wool not the gas/kerosene/wool.

Thanks Pete.
