No Start!

Well, I thought I'd take the Valk out for a trip around the block and fill her up with gas, as I was on reserve.  It started fine like it always does.  I drove about 3 miles to the gas station and filled her up.  I turned on the key and hit the starter button and it cranked OK, but I released the button thinking it would start, but it didn't.  I hit the starter button again and nothing!  It won't crank, no idiot lights, no headlight, no turn signals, no horn, nothing.  I removed the right side cover and removed and checked all the fuses in the fuse box and also the 30 amp main fuse.  I ended getting a ride home and returned with my flatbed trailer and towed it home.  I thought I'd run this by you all to get some ideas before I start on it tomorrow.  I do have a Chilton manual and tools, so that won't be a problem.  With no idiot lights coming on, should I start with checking the ignition switch or starter button, or somewhere else?  I guess it could even be a loose connection somewhere.  Of course I will check the easy things first, like the battery, etc.  I appreciate any guidance you can give.

Check the battery cables, including the ground on the back of the engine block. it is behind the alternator.

Also check the starter relay under the rt. side. That connector has been known to burn out and cause all kinds of grief. I'd suggest before doing anything, put a screwdriver or similar across the two posts for that relay but be sure the bike is in neutral. If it cranks then it's most likely that connector. What you describe does sound more like cables as Bill suggested.

What they said.  Be sure the battery is up to full charge but sounds like a lack of continuity either battery cable or the start relay or wiring.  Rare occasions the ignition switch gives a problem.

Well folks, it didn't take me very long to figure this one out.  I removed the seat and checked the battery with a known good test light and the light did not light up!  I put a volt meter on it and it read 0 volts!  I have never personally seen a battery do this, going from full cranking power to absolutely nothing that fast.  It didn't even enough power to illuminate one stinking little test light bulb.  The battery is 2 years, 7 months old. 

I have had good results with Walmart batteries, but went to 4 different ones in my area and nobody had one.  I will order one off the Internet and should be here on or before Friday.  I'll probably try a Yuasa brand this time.

Thanks Grumpy, John, and Thunderbolt for your responses.  Much appreciated.  After looking at the wiring diagram, I can see why you suggested looking at the battery ground wire connection, Grumpy.  It made sense.  BTW, I have a Clymer manual, not a Chilton manual.  I like the Clymer manuals much better.
