Doing some maintenance and noticed my tire seems to have excessive wear on it,, looks like it is on the way to the wear bars in the center. It is a Champiro VP1 and I have been running about 38  psi on it, but it only has 4300 miles on it. I really like the tire, great handling compared to the Vredestein it replaced, and may replace this with another when it is gone. I will lower the pressure to 34 and try that out, but is it my imagination or is this just the way this tire wears? Lookin for opinions and others experience.

I run mine at 34. 38 could have worn the center too quickly.

What kind of mileage are you getting on yours Britman?

I run the much harder (UTQG) Goodyear Triple Tred at 40psi (sometime 38), and I do get just a bit more center than side wear like yours (despite doing as much curvy riding as I can manage, though much is not that curvy).  I like the tire harder for riding/handling, and willingly sacrifice some increased center wear to have it.

But I wouldn't consider your tire excessively center worn, mine have looked much the same; though because mine get 37K, when they look like yours, they still have some life left to them (and not unsafe at all).

BUT, if I had it off (looking like that) I'd probably put a new one on anyway.  What's $125 for another 37K?

Mine is going back on Jess to be run until is's done, the thing I am questioning if this tire looks excessively worn for a Champiro VP1  with 4300 miles.  Wondering what others who run this tire are getting for wear and mileage.

I have also noticed that when I have the pressure set in a car tire to where it handles best to me, I get more wear in the center...  only two so far, to make this judgement on.

Yeah, I can't speak to anything but my Goodyears (which were pretty popular 12 years ago, when I started using them).  Since then, many have moved on to softer, rounder tires, but not me.  They've always been great for me, and I just stick with what I know (and the high miles).

Whether cars, trucks or bike tires, I've always run them hard, and think I get better overall longevity, though a bit of center (over side) wear is pretty common.

Well, I don't think there is any doubt that a harder tire will get more mileage than a softer one. I have used softer tires on my bikes for the last 30 years thinking that they grip better,, not positive that is a fact,, but  I know that the softer the tire the less mileage I get. It seems I have been changing  the rear tires every year which is one reason I changed to a car tire on this Valk. I tried this tire because of others reports, and it does work very well for a CT, but I would like to hear what mileage other users have gotten from them.

Pancho.

Use the word Champiro in the search function and you'll find a few posts about this brand of tire.

Thanks Britman, I had seen most of the earlier posts.  If the numbers you posted earlier are what you have actually gotten on these tires, I might be wearing mine a bit quicker, but still in the ballpark.  I really like the feel of the tire but may need to look for something I can get a bit more mileage on,,,,, I mean 4300 miles and looking like this,, I have had MC tires that did better.   I wonder why they wear so quickly on a motorcycle?

My champiro tire wore fairly quick for car tire standards. I don’t remember the exact mileage but between 12-15k. I did have the higher V rated tire which is no longer manufactured and sold anywhere I can find. Center did wear out faster but I lowered the pressure down from 40 to mid-low 30’s and the rate of wear decreased.  With any pressure I ran it was still a great handling tire and $/mile way better than any motorcycle tire

Weirder forces at play due to the lean of a bike?

More weight per square inch compared to a single tire on a car?

More heat?

I do have the lower mileage rated H tire, so I now think there is no reason for concern that I am entering an altered state and riding like a maniac spinning and sliding the wheel all over the road while laughing and screaming curses and not remembering in my day to day life as I was wondering....    or am I      ...   I think I will lower the pressure a couple of PSI and see if it feels OK for the remainder of the tires life.
  Thanks guys.

to those that still use them the Tripletreds are discontinued. I had to do a lot of searching to find one which should be delivered tomorrow.

When I was researching to post on this thread I discovered that.  Or maybe it isn't discontinued, but not still made in the 206 60 for our bikes.  I have too many miles to go on mine to order another to hang on the wall.

well,  I triple checked just now (older thread) but the champiro VP1 is no longer to be found anywhere that I can find in 205/60/16 or my 2nd choice 205/55/16.   checked amazon, walmart, and called discount tire and they confirmed no longer available been discontinued and none in stock in the US at discount tire anyways.  If I can get 12-13K vs. only 9K with cycle tire at 65 bucks vs. say 120+ for cycle rear tire is a no brainer.

What is a good 2nd choice?

Austone taxi tire (are they discontinued yet or where can get one now?)

General Altimax rt43?   or ????

When the Champiro VP1 was done, I went with the Leao Lion tire and it seemed to be a marked improvement over the VP1.

Then on a whim, I decided to try a Dunny E3 just for comparison, and have to admit that it corners better than any of the CTs I have used. That said, I plan on putting the Leao Lion back on soon and see what it feels like again.

An improvement in what way?

Britman, I may have had a defective VP1 from the get go as I never felt it was a good tire for me. It just felt heavy and sluggish in the corners, had to keep it over inflated to feel manageable, and it wore out quickly. If you look at the picture of the VP1 and the Leao side by side, you can see the difference in the profile. To me the Leao Lion feels neutral and easier to ride. It is an ultra high performance tire with a service rating of 94 W and cheap. How can you go wrong? https://simpletire.com/leao-p205-55r16-221005924-tires
One downside for some may be the profile which is 55 in the 16 inch size which is low for long legged types.

Totally off topic, but your best friend looks like a great pooch!!

Yeah, he had been a problem child, came with a complete dossier when I got him. He had been returned three times to the shelter for biting adults, rough with children, cat killing etc......  three pages of medical records... that's more than I have, he's come a long way and still only 3 1/2 years old. I think he had a rough childhood.       He's much better now... Good Dog

My now 12 year old Shepard/Akita mix was a nightmare when he was young. The humane society where we got him said he was removed from a home where he was abused, but they didn't say how. He bit me more times than I  can remember, destroyed furniture, got tossed from doggy daycare for being aggressive with the staff, etc. We tried 5 different trainers. The last one was in a very affluent area and charged $100 an hour. She told us to have him put down. Said he was the most headstrong dog she'd ever met.

We decided that we couldn't do that, and we knew that if we tried to give him up to anyone else, he'd end up getting put down. I worked with him like crazy, none of which seemed to help. The only thing that really helped was time. As he got older, he calmed down. I think somehow he remembered all the time I tried to work with him, because now he is by my side whenever I'm home. Like we bonded or something.

It kills me because the vet says he's full of tumors now, and it wouldn't be worth operating. The tumors multiply so quickly, they know they won't get the cancer out of him by removing them. So, now we wait. When he gets to the point where he's uncomfortable, I'll have to put him down so he doesn't suffer. I'm damn glad we didn't do it 10 years ago though.
