I just finished doing a desmog on my new to me interstate.
I have a question that I can not find an answer to with the search function.

Do I need to adjust my carbs after a desmog?
I thought I read at one time that you adjust the carbs 2 full turns out instead of the 1 1/2 they are normally at?

I know that I will have to do a carb sync after a desmog.

Thanks, Jim

I didn't. I see no reason your synch would be off either. Can't hurt anything to do a synch though.

I had to turn mine out just under a half turn after the desmog to get rid of the popping in the exhaust the desmog introduced.

desmog has zero effect on the carbs. the smog system does not have anything to do with the carbs, it only worked when going to a closed throttle and used engine vacuum downstream of the carbs to operate.

Each carb has a “butterfly” that opens and closes. Ideally, they all are in the exact same position when closed. Carburetor synchronization is the means by which we adjust them to all the same position. Carb #3 is considered the “master” as it has no adjustment, so all others are adjusted to match it. Since you’ve done nothing to disturb the adjustment screws during a desmog, there’s no reason to assume you need to re-sync them.
That being said, I always verify sync after a desmog, but only because I have the tools to do so easily and you’re “right there” as it were. Usually working on someone elses motorcycle who has never had it done. Takes very little time and is easy, but again, not doing it because of the desmog.
I can’t think of any reason you’d need to adjust the pilot screws if your bike was running satisfactorily the way they were.

Thanks everyone,
As I get older I get things stuck in my head that do not belong there.
I have no idea where that idea came from, but I will file it with as just more nonsense that gets rattled around in an old head.
