Hello fellow riders, Im currently having some problems with the temperature light of my 1997 GL1500CT coming on and off for no reason. I have read that this may be due to a problem with the temp sending unit which unfortunately is no longer available.

Can you fix this problem with newer parts and make some sort of mod?

Saludos from Costa Rica (Pura Vida)

I had this issue last season and was told to check my coolant level. I found it was down just a bit but since topping it off my light hasn't come on. Its worth checking and its free.

I've had a problem with my temp light coming on and off intermittently. The fix on early valks is to replace the sensor for the lamp and jump the two terminals at the temp light controller.I bought a sensor for a 2k model just haven't had the time to finish the job.

Do you have a wiring schematic showing how to do this?

I have posted his a few times before, maybe it will help:

The 97-99 Valkyrie Standards and Tourers have a Thermo Sensor on the thermostat housing. The Thermo Sensor has a wire that connects it to the 2P connector on the Temperature Indicator Unit behind the left side cover and overflow tank. The Temperature Indicator Unit is what determines whether or not to turn the coolant light on by grounding a wire on the 4P connector on the Temperature Indicator Unit.

Later Valkyries and all Interstates use a Thermostatic Switch to turn the Coolant Light on. The switch is located on the thermostat housing and is directly connected to the coolant light and controls the light to turn it off or on. Later Valkyries and interstates do not use the Temperature indicator Unit located behind the left side cover.

To eliminate the 97-99 the Temperature Indicator Unit  and change to the later Thermostatic Switch do the following.
1, Replace the Thermo Sensor in the Thermostat Housing with the later Thermostatic Switch (item #9, part # 37760-MAV-003 on the parts fiche).  You will probably have to change the connector on the end of the wire to match the new part.
2. Remove the Left Side Cover , the Coolant Tank, and disconnect the Temperature Indicator Unit (item #16 on the parts fiche).
3. Jumper the Green/Blue wire on the 2P connector to the Lt Green/Black wire in the 4P connector.
4. The old Temperature Indicator Unit is no longer needed.

So now you can remove the old indicator unit and cap off the power supply to the unit?

Thank you very much for the info and will order the parts to do the change.

Quick question, by jumping the wires you mean to connect a new wire (bridge) between the green/blue and gree/black, Or cutting the green/blue and conecting it directly to the green/black?

Either way you want to do it. By cutting and splicing, it would be more dependable but will alter the wiring harness. You can look for the mating pins and make a jumper. Just be sure that they do not touch other pins in the connectors.

Why is their a power supply to the temp control unit?
Does this do something else, since I see no need for power there.
And removing this unit altogether would be OK?

The temperature indicator unit is an electronic unit and needs power to operate. You are removing it.  Power no longer needed.
