I am planning to do some riding in north GA and TN soon.  I need to end up in NC (near Raleigh), but have several days to get there.  Any suggestions?

Afterwards I plan to make my way across and pick up Route 66, following it to CA.  While I am in CA I am considering San Francisco as I have never seen the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc. Leaving there will likely take me into NV and UT, ending up in CO.

Any suggestions for “must see” places, roads I should (or should’t) travel, or places I should avoid along the way?

Many awesome roads in north ga and east tn. Just take a two lane and go. Route 66 not much to see have ridden much of it out west. If it were me I would stay the hell out of SF on a bike. But that is just me.

Virginia 58 is a good ride, from Cumberland Gap to South Boston.  Then turn South to Raleigh.
Or when you leave Raleigh go North to South Boston then 58 to the gap.  Just be sure to avoid I-40 in N.C.

Janice, this sounds like an excellent ride ! You will love S.F.  cooldude there are so many places to see and roads to take, I don't know where to begin. I think I would recommend staying away from the 5 and 101 as much as you can. If you go a little west of Bakersfield, there are some nice 2 lane roads that will take you up to Gilroy avoiding a lot of the Interstates. Another option is 395 up to Yosemite and across it. And the of course Hiway 1 is a must. But I would do it on the way back. When you get down to Carpenteria go east from there avoiding most of the L.A. Metropolis.
As I said there is so much to see. Being you are going to be so close, I would go north out of S.F. to see the Redwoods. "Ave of the Giants" is pretty cool. I've done the Alcatraz tour 3 times now over the years. It's very cool. But it will eat up most of a day. A lot of history, if you can squeeze in the time definitely worth it. Riding in S.F. is not any worse than riding other big cities. Don't be tempted to ride down Lombard Street. You will get stuck in traffic at some severe road angles. (Did it once)  Shocked
I could go on for hours about things to see and do. You will have a great time !

South of SF about 30 miles is a popular MC road called Skyline. Alices Restaurant is a good stop for lunch.

Get lost in the green area. Don't go to Knoxville, Chattanooga or Greenville...

Thanks guys!

Dirty Dan .... I should have 3 to 4 weeks to spend with my knees in the breeze.  I expect to leave AL within the next week and need to be in CO before June 1st.  A few days in NC with a good friend is the only definite destination on this trip.  I do want to stop at the Grand Canyon again and will likely return to Oatman as I thought that was a cool little place.  West of there, I am just roaming until I get back to CO.

Bighead .... I have some concerns about SF as well.  I have ridden in Atlanta ... I don’t especially like it, but I have done it multiple times.  I am concerned about a big city that I know nothing about.  I was in San Diego once and the bikers scared me to death riding between cars (riding the divider lines).  I may let my fear get the best of me before I get that far.  We shall see!

Meathead .... Thanks for the great input.  Awesome info!  I hadn’t even thought about the Redwoods.  I was planning on 395 across Yosemite though.  I will definitely try to catch Skyline and Alice’s.

Hubcapsc .... I have ridden around Nantahala and most of the Blue Ridge Pkwy.  Beautiful country!  I did some riding from North GA into TN several years ago with a fellow biker as tour guide.  We rode some beautiful two lanes, but I can’t recall the road numbers. Ugh!

From North GA into TN... you can head north of 64 on 28 (that's really NC) or
141/74 or 68 or a dirt road  Wink ... once in TN you can do 129 (The Dragon) or
165 (the Cherohala)... of course there's a million other roads too...

Unless you want a particular road, just stay in that green area and ride around...

If you haven't been to Zion or Bryce, they are definitely worth your time.  cooldude

Did Lombard Street once several years ago. It was a damp foggy morning. 4-wheel traffic was a non-issue, but the green slimy moss-algae like coating on the smooth wet red bricks made the trek down the hill a bit disconcerting. Wifeunit opted out and walked down. No leaning into the turns on that street.  Shocked

Back in '77 I bought a Yamaha 750 and rode around the states visiting family and places. I had never even heard of Lombard Street at the time. I rode all over S.F. and just accidentally went down. Once on it there ain't no going back. The traffic was thick and they would only move a foot at a time. There were spots that I had to wait where it seemed my helmet was about one foot from the uphill side.

Thank you all for these great suggestions!  One thing is for certain .... avoid Lombard Street at all cost.  That is definitely good to know. I will learn from your experience.  Thanks guys!

Once you reach the Golden Gate bridge in SF you might consider Hwy 1 north as far as the historical hamlet of Mendocino. Then backtrack a couple miles to pick up Hwy 128 east along the Navarro river. At Boonville take 253 over the hill . . . you will come out in Ukiah. Then Hwy 20 east to the central valley, or continue on 20 east to connect with I-80. Or, take 49 to Nevada City and continue over the hill to Reno. A few miles east of Reno pick up Hwy 50 east - the loneliest road in American. A beautiful ride through the desert as you make your way east to Utah and connect with I-70 to take you through the gorge at Glenwood Springs in Colorado. If you stop at various locations along hwy 50 you can get a card stamped validating your travels. Send it to Nevada Dept. of Tourism. and get a certificate and a pin for your jacket or vest; "I survived Hwy 50".
