Hey guys, took my bike to the local dyno shop here in Destin FL and they turned me away because they were terrified to touch a Valkyrie. I’ve read about a guy named Grumpy on this forum but don’t know if he is still around or how to contact him. Can someone point me to a place who knows what they’re doing with these beauties? Thanks!

Contact him via PM, he is pretty good about getting back to you.

What type of work are you needing for your Valkyrie?

There might be a member that is closer to you that might be able to help.

I will pass on installing the factory pro kit, I hear nothing good about them, make the bike run overly rich. The reps say run one size in the front cylinders and different jet sizes in the other cylinders. most that have installed them have had the same results, a motor running overly rich. Also I do not have access to a dyno.

Will back Grumpy on this.
The Valkyrie does not respond well to changes in air box modifications or really even shims on the needles much less stagger jetting and different needles.
There are still a few new 6 degree advance trigger wheels out there to purchase and an Interstate ECU supposedly helps a bit but have not verified the latter.
I have been running a trigger wheel for years and if nothing else the mileage seems better!

Different filters KN etc don't have much effect, but a no no is drilling holes in the filter housing to let in more air. Honda has a good design with the venturis , mods tend to screw up the air flow. Personally I run an IS icu with a 4 degree trigger wheel. I have a set of Web cams I installed a couple months after I got the IS. Last dyno run I had in Daytona was 105 hp and 102 ft lbs torque. And I usually get 39 to 40 miles per gallon. I had a second run at a bike night in clearwater and made 104 hp, so I am happy with it. I figure any thing over 100 hp is great.

I have the same as Grumpy....4 deg. TW and I/S ECU. Also installed I/S springs and a K&N w/o foam prefilter was in there when I bought it so never bothered to change it. Dyno'd one time at IZ in Kentucky, temps were miserable(upper 90's to low 100's), pulled mid-90's on HP and a couple lower on torque. Bike gives me all I want or need & gives mid-upper 30's in mpg running right at 3k on open road. Thought about doing the Weber cams but decided at my age there's two things I don't need: 1) a fast woman, 2) a fast bike! Both can get ya killed.  Wink  The Valk is enough just as it is.

thanks for the insight guys ... everything was stock on the bike until i installed a cobra exhaust and now it doesn’t seem to have the same get up and go ... i assumed the answer was to tune the jets and test the results on a dyno ... i have no idea what a trigger wheel or i/s ecu is but i’ll do my research ... thanks again

Cobra pipes are known to reduce horsepower.

Maybe so, but they sound so good with or without baffles.  I did put the Cobra needles in mine.  I already had the K&N air filter installed.

I agree, they do sound good, but single pipe from each cylinder does not have any scavenging effect like the stock pipes.

Page, did installing the Cobra needles make a difference at all? or did you do it all at once?

I posted this in 2011.
also depending what yr yours is. all '98s use the R2 emission cams so oem is 90hp. '97s with the R1 cams were the 100hp runners. others yrs usually were about 94-96hp. I checked a few yrs after '98 and they had one R2 and one R1 camshaft which according to magazine test reports made 4 more HP than the '98s

This was posted by J. Orr, 3/27/1998, on the GWRRA BBS, valkyrie section.
The following mods were done by Marc the owner of Factory Pro on a valkyrie that had cobra 6x6 pipes.
K&N filter (w/o prefilter)
Air box mod (remove plastic welded baffle)
38 pilot jet
3.5 turns idle mixture screw
front needles set on #3
mid and rear needles set on #2
115 main jets all carbs
this picked up 5 hp over the base run with the cobras.

this HP is still down from the stock pipes or almost the same.
