Just a simple horn suggestion please

With my newest to me Interstate it came with a roached twin horn set and the first thing I did was to bin-it!  All I want is a simple small horn that is sufficient and I don’t want it to be seen.  Any suggestions Valk heads?     ???

I'm in the minority, and rarely (if ever) use a horn.  So I just got a decent auto parts horn (much the same as the original meep meep one).

I had had two different loud Sebels mounted under the swing arm, but they both quit working from all the crud and dirt under there (about 3 years each).  The auto parts horn is still under the swing arm, but not failing like the Stebels did.  I liked the Stebel just fine, but not a new one every three years.  

I only need a horn to pass inspections.  When horn moments come up, I am maneuvering away from idiots and danger, not honking at them in escalation of road rage (always a possibility).

My road rage comes with words and gestures, not my horn.

The method for mounting any horn under the swing arm is a couple of long radiator clamps holding a small metal plate (to which you mount and wire the horn).  It can't lose but 10% of total noise you might get from higher up inside a pod.

I don't use a mounted metal jack adapter, just a home made wood one, and that does not conflict with my horn.

OEM. Mount it where you want to.

My OEM wires where pulled up from under the right side timing belt cover, where the OEM horn is mounted, back to the neck. Wires where added to bring it into the fairing. A single snail horn was mounted there, which sounded offal.


I'm the opposite. I want LOUD to be heard when not seen. The person I drove into did not hear me honking at him after he pulled out in front of me. The person who wasn't looking in my direct as they drove through a stop sign, jumped/shat himself, after I hit the horn on my Air Horn I had mounted an another bike.

I've recently added to my post on my upgrades, about the GL1800 and after market horns.

Yes, I've always thought a pod mount horn a good idea (if you don't have pod lights).  

But I'm a lazy bastard, and the bike came with the (nice and heavy duty) under swing arm mount, and replacing the horn there was just plug and play.  

Most years, the only time I ever hit the horn is at my annual inspection.  Pretty much the same thing with my cages (and come to think of it, I don't think I've ever hit the horn in my new truck; I assume it has one).

I'm more inclined to hit my brights (on, not flashed) than my horn for trouble brewing out ahead.  If it's behind me, it's over.

I did use my horn while stopped on BRP waiting for a black bear to decide if he was going to cross the road, or just sit there looking at me once.  That, and preparing for an emergency Uturn, if he decided to run AT me.  I could probably have blown by him, but the thought off having a collision where I ended up under the bike with him made me decide on a Uturn instead.  He finally sprinted across the road, and rolled down the steep hill on the down slope.

When you take the pod off you will need about a 6” piece of flat stock. Then make a 90* bend in it,drill a hole to mount the horn on then a hole to mount to the side of the radiator.  Once afixed to the side of the radiator just slip the pod back over it. Gotta kinda finesse it a bit but no binding or obstructions once you figure out how to get it over. You wont be disappointed I promise. I put mine on and the wife said (after she heard the test) why in the hell are you putting that obnoxious thing on there? I replied so the cages will hear it. Well about a week later a Lincoln town car was pulling over on us and I hit the horn and said town car almost hit the ditch on the other side of the road, and I said that is why I put this obnoxious horn on here and she didn’t say a word and smiled

Jerry have you ever seen how Flask mounted the pair of Mitsuba horns under the swing arm mount on my Blue & Grey Interstate? Nice & neat, out of the way with great sound. He just bolted them to a piece of 1/8" or 3/16" flat aluminum. I'll try to text you a picture tomorrow afternoon.

Big BF makes a quad horn that mounts under the bike and is extremely loud.  I did not see any reference to it in the string above.  Do a search for Big BF or quad horns and I am sure you will find it.  He usually goes to Inzane and sets up his shop for the week and will add any of his mods, but you have to schedule.  He also travels the country during the year and his schedule is published on the board.

I know he has been having some health issues, so not sure of his exact status.

This Wolo side mount is real easy, just a piece of 1/8" flat aluminum with 2 holes in it. Doesn't look bad and is out in the open for clear sound.

Got a pair of Dodge Caravan horns from a junk yard. Mounted under swing arm.
Have used them in battle with great results. Pretty loud. $8 plus wiring and mounting hardware from hardware store. Great for angle parking areas where it is difficult for people backing out to see you coming. They move, blast'em.

Generally used sparingly but with great effect.

They are louder than OEM. I 'm not a horn blower but will use them if needed.

I agree, so I'm in that same minority.  I have the Stebel (which is the same as the Wolo) horn on the front of my Interstate, but after a while it starts to sound wimpy.  I assume the compressor gets clogged with crud or corrosion.  I've found that spraying some lube in the intake while blowing the horn fixes the problem, but sooner or later it clogs again.  A heavier lube, like 'CLP' (sold in gun stores) seems to last longer.

On my Valk Tourer I installed a pair of basic automotive horns under the swingarm.  They're very loud, inexpensive, and maintenance free.  They install horns like these on millions of cars and trucks, and they work great.  Sometimes simpler is better.

I mounted this FIAM off the lower engine mount. I like that its not super obvious and doesnt stand out ...unlike the OEM horn. (Honda team went.. Oh sh!t, we forgot to add a horn on it!)
Bike's not on the road yet, but I do like it, we'll see how it goes. Oh yeah... tested it.. it is LOUD!

I just mounted a decent car horn (mid tone) in my Right pod. Mounting was simple... the flange mounted right onto the bolt that holds the two pod pieces together and the OEM wiring ran up there easily completely out of sight. Covered the pod sides with screen so the horn is barely visible. Did that about 7 years ago... never any issues from washing the bike or riding through torrential rains. Don't know why I put up  with that awful OEM "horn" for so long

Jerry, I mounted my stock horn under my fairing aiming straight down at the front fender. All you see from the front is the side profile. I have a chrome (or you can go black) cover too. The horn is high enough so as not to hit the front fender when compressing the front suspension. I used a relay from the stock horn wires to feed it more amperage, much like the after market horn do. It’s plenty loud and almost out off eyesight.

do you have cobra or other loud exhaust?  If so,  skip the horn entirely, put in the clutch, and rev the snot out of it!   

I did that once from a cager pulling into my lane and scared the crap outta her in front of me she looked quickly and quickly got back into her own lane NOT looking whatsoever when changing lanes.

On the rear of the battery box there is a big empty space where I mounted a Stebal compact air horn. There is a bulkhead in the middle that needs to be cut out to open up that compartment. I drilled a few  3/8ths holes on the sides of the compartment to make sure the sound gets out easily. The horn stays high, dry, and clean.......and out of sight.

Just gets a bit of dust in there, but nothing bad at all. It is loud as hell too. Like it supposed to be.
