So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: April 28, 2019, 05:00:17 PM »

As several folks here know, I Hot Shot (transport) all over the country. I seldom tow (pull other's trailers) for other folks. Last night I got a call from one of my son's friends that wanted me to tow his boat on his gooseneck trailer to Lake Cumberland. Lake Cumberland is the biggest lake in Kentucky. This is a very big boat in relative terms to be on KY highways.

If someone will help me out and post a picture I took, I would be greatly appreciative,

This boat (catamaran) has twin 598 Supercharged V8s. It's 40+ feet long and over 11 feet wide. Full fuel load is 300 gallons of premium fuel. It's a frigg'n monster!   Supposedly, this monster is capable of 140 mph.    Not with me on it!  The build sheet shows the cost new as $646,000.
Will send a picture to whoever will help me out
Would prefer to text the picture.

Rams, from your description - that sounds like it qualifies as an oversized load - does KY require special license / permits / load tapes that say "Oversize load" , etc. ? combination of curiousity and not wanting to see you in trouble..

Yes, it does qualify as an oversized load.   Sent the picture to Serk, it shows the rig at the destination.  I have no idea how it got there.

As I said in the first posting, I rarely pull anyone else's trailer.    It's even rarer that I pull a boat.   Boat folks are just as finickie about their Pride and Joy as we are about our Valkyries.   This was a singular event and yes, I know I was lucky DOT wasn't out and about.   Interestingly though, I stopped for fuel near the destination and while fueling up, a Park Ranger (LEO) pulled in to the same parking lot.  He came over and took a look at the boat and wanted to know all about it.   Told him what I knew.   Told me to be careful on my way to the lake.  They have a lot of big boats there.  This was done strictly as a favor to my son and his/our friend.   I wouldn't do this for the vast majority of the humans that inhabit this planet.

reminds me, well sort of, way back decades now ago I saw a near 40 footer attempt to go down BOTH sides of a boat ramp taking up BOTH loading/unloading docks launch onto Lake Waubesa, the smaller of the Madison WI chain of lakes, while hogging the BUSY ramps for all the 30+ minutes I was pulling out my 17 foot fishing boat.

A lot of people were upset hogging both ramps since is a fishing lake, NOT a pleasure yacht lake which should be reserved for the much bigger lake Mendota in Madison.

I never gave him a piece of my mind, but am sure others did that day backing up the ramps for 30 minutes or more should not be allowed while 10 other boats are just waiting around (10 minutes tops in and out)

That type of boat has hauled more dope than Doan's Pills.

I hope you inspected the bilges before the haul.   Grin

I think he's more likely to be "fishing" with something like this:

Doesn't the sand chew up the props rather fast?  Roll Eyes

Re. posting off Postimages, as Britman said....at the top of the pic you want are the two icons. One looks like this "<" and the other a trash can. Click on the "<" and on the next screen click to the far right on the 2nd from bottom line and it will say "copied"....no need to "copy", it does is automatically. As stated, last step is place the cursor on your post here where you want the pic to show then "preview" and it will appear. Then post.

Pretty sure such activities did occur with this vessel.  I was told the original owner is still in jail.   Obviously an "open" water vessel.    Inspect the bilges?   I couldn't even get up into the dang thing with my bad shoulder.

I once chartered a private sailboat (for the wife and I), in the Caribbean.  It was a beautiful 60 foot custom yacht that had once been owned by the governor of Bermuda.  He later sold it, it became a drug runner, they (it) were caught, and seized, and the couple who I chartered it from bought it.

not so sure I would want to drive that big of a boat unless in the ocean or one of the 5 Great lakes here in the upper midwest.

that was about the size/length of boat hogging up both docks on smaller local lake with just 2 docks to load/unload fishing boats.

I wonder what the tongue weight of that size boat would be if not 5th wheeling it in the bed of the truck?

Based on my own experience with my equipment, my estimate is the gooseneck tongue weight is around 1,200 lbs.  The trailer (although heavy) was well built and well engineered.  Was not a difficult tow.
