Fellas,
Paul here from Lansing, MI. I am a former Goldwing owner and have had many other Hondas. I just purchased my first Valkyrie as a project - it is hydrolocked. I am looking forward to getting it running! I have all the parts on order, including a good tank cleaner/sealer, the Pingel petcock, a new rear case and gears, etc. The carbs were recently rebuilt, but I have the parts to rebuild them if needed as well.
The only pieces I am missing are the special sockets. Would anybody that has completed the job be willing to sell/loan me theirs? I can pay over PayPal or send a check. Thanks!

I have never repaired a locked engine, but from what I have read, the challenge is removing the starter to repair the broken tooth, and/or replace the starter altogether. There is a Honda tool for tuning the carbs, it's a socket shaped like a "D". the honda tool is fairly pricey but there are alternatives out there. Of course, you will have to remedy what caused the hydrolock in the first place--petcock, carb needles etc. Carb rebuild probably a good idea. Desmog while you have access.

If you need a "D" tool, you can make one by getting a short piece of bake line and flattening one side. Works just as well as the high priced stuff.

I think he is needing the big sockets for removing the clutch basket and the case behind it. I would try the deep set impact sockets at Harborfreight. I think you need 36mm and 42mm. But don't quote me on that, double check it.

I've been buying large individual sockets for front/rear wheel removal on eBay. Usually get in a day or so. Fazer

I cleared my hydro locked engine with minimal parts and tools! I pulled the plugs and cranked it over to clear the cylinders then I change the oil. I replaced the the petcock and went for a ride.

The link in the one I posted to, had another link with more detail on the sockets. What I'm trying to find out is have you confirmed that the gears are broken? I'd figure out how you're going to do the job, engine in or out, and remove the starter to see the broken gears 1st, before spending hours on removing the rear cover. I'm not really trying to question your knowledge, but I don't personally know you and your skill level, and just trying to save a bunch of time chasing something that might not be there.

Pardon the delay, I was out of town for awhile. Yes, I removed the starter and both gears have missing teeth. It’ll definitely be an engine out service!
