Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: May 02, 2019, 04:03:07 AM »

Springtime weather… Necessary, unavoidable, usually with fairly predictable features, and… usually wet. In the southeastern US, we are in yet another cycle with waves of rain coming and going. Nothing we riders can do about it… just hunker down or try to dodge it the best we can… So far, so good, but it appears it might get a bit dicey very soon…

We pulled out of Clinton, TN, rather late in the morning… I wasn’t fully committed to leaving just then, but that ‘little voice’ was whispering in my ear that I was needing some wind. Gordon hadn’t given any sign my welcome had been worn-thin; it was more of knowing what I should do but not being highly motivated… of realizing the concept and its urgency but being sluggish in the execution. In a word, lazy.

I was mostly recovered by then… Sunday evening I’d accompanied SmokinJoe to Applebee’s in Oak Ridge for a celebration of sorts. I’d just a couple of days before received wonderful news about my ‘condition’, and the idea of having one or two sounded mighty good to this recent practitioner of a tea-total lifestyle.

No alcohol, aspirin, or other similar items in a couple of months that might have complicated surgery… I was clearly overdue for some libation and blowing off steam, and it did occur to me that this might be a good test of bladder control progress. Joe called and his offer was just too good to pass up… Besides, it’s always good to spend some quality ‘bar stool time’ with that fascinating character!

The following day I’d dealt with the after-effects of over-doing things the evening before… No skull cramps, mercifully, but I did have an unexpectedly highly elevated pooperosity level that proved to be more than a mere alarm! The usual drained feeling with lack of energy or motivation made it an easy call to hang around one more day… and nap a few times… Yep, I did. The notion of a second day of ‘recovery’ would have been an easy one to entertain, too, but sometimes we just have to get up and get going…

Gordon lead me to breakfast in Knoxville, then to the road I’d wanted to take towards North Carolina. We said our farewells, and once again words failed me miserably… How does one say to such a fine person just how much he/she respects and appreciates him?

We all have learned the value of ‘layering’ when out and about… Throughout the day items of warm apparel were shed one at a time as the need arose, and even though it was a short day, the challenges of storing sweatshirts, jackets, gloves, etc., presented the same challenge it always does when warmer weather returns… It was good practice, however, as soon enough Jerry and I will be dealing with that daily for a couple of months.

A short day, for sure, but a good day! Back roads, especially in that neck of the woods, mean much curvatude, delightful changes in elevation per mile, plus interesting sights and inspiring views to stimulate the imagination… Ah yes, departing that day was indeed the right thing to do!

Good to see that you're back in the wind again, Bruce.  Life always feels better after a positive result from a negative connotation.   I can't think of a better rider than Smokin' Joe to straighten you out and get you involved in the best part of riding (well, actually there is no bad part).

My Miata is waiting patiently for the weather to improve so that I can put the top down and do some 'in the wind" myself.  However, right now, too much rain.

Beers at Applebee’s with Joe and Bruce ? And I wasn’t invited ?  tickedoff  Smiley I don’t know if I could keep up with you 2 in the story telling or the imbibement (sp), but I sure would try !
Reading John’s latest edition I kind of feel guilty in celebrating, but I think I know John enough that I’m sure he is just fine with it. I hope you and Jerry have a fabulous ride.  cooldude

Nice post Bruce.

After several months of concern, worry, doctor visits, surgery, and more hanging in suspense,....and winter weather,.........I guess you are just out of the habit.  Who wouldn’t be?  Specially after a few beers when out of that habit too!

But I am sure that you will be back in your normal stride soon.
