Staying at the Best western? With the Mexican restaurant in the parking lot?
I stayed there a couple of times on my way out to NM.

I rode with Britman to Hazen AK... he got a cold and I ditched him  Evil  to ride
with The Wild Bunch... almost 700 miles on i40 and I think Allan could have gone
700 more... I'm noodling around Colorado by myself now and they are charging
hard...

I plotted a route to Gunnison for tonight, but after a phone call from Wimp, I'm
going to meet up with them in Durango tonight...

Today was a first. 90 mph right between two massive storms. All I had was an arc of sunlight ahead of me as I rode north from Clayton to Raton NM. 2 funnel clouds dropped out of the storm to the right and the clouds were so low I could feel damp tendrils on the back of my neck. Hellacious side wind had me hanging off the left side of the bike. Semi trailers were heeling like a sailboat. 38 miles  and I squeaked through the gap as it closed behind me.

It's s good to ride.

Glad all is good Paul. I went through your home turf. On Saturday right through Clayton Ga. on my way home from my 9 days on the road. I was able to log almost 3000 miles. I had intended to head west but Mother Nature had different ideas so I spent 9 days riding mountain roads in Va,NC and N Ga. it was a good time. Even made it to the outer banks of NC.  Stayed one night in Kitty Hawk and toured some light houses.

There we were, Big Wolf and I, standing at the overlook gazing at the headwaters of the Rio Grande River just down the east side of Slumgullion Pass, and... I hear this voice behind me with a distinctly British accent! I look around and... HOLY COW! It's one of my favorite Americans! Sure was good running into you that way, Paul... See ya again in a few days...

That's one of my most-favorite rides in Colorado - Slumgullian pass!  Great choice y'all.  Wish I was riding there with you.  Lake City - just North of the pass - great overnight stop.  Particularly the North Face Lodge.  However I see their price has DOUBLED.  Used to be, you got to stay in a B&B at motel prices.  Very nicely appointed, themed rooms, excellent patio, for about $80 a night.  Now it's $170.  Oh well - I expected them to put their prices where they should be for the quality they deliver.  It was nice while it lasted...

Mark,

I haven't stayed in Lake City in several years... I do like that town, though... The prices there are a bit steep for this 'senior citizen on a fixed income', but I was thinking of making an exception this time... No vacancies I could find on the internet (at least within my 'stretch' budget tolerance range) for the night we needed!

Heck, I had Jerry along with me, so I figured I had a co-signer available, and I was fairly optimistic I could sweet talk their credit manager... hopefully into not having to put up one or more of my grand-kids as collateral...

In the end, however, we stayed in Durango... Too pricey there too, but I didn't relish the thought of spending the night on the road or under a tree someplace... Alas, price is commensurate with and in-step with supply and demand... a three-way dynamic, and right now the 'favor needle' is pointing towards vendors... Of course, it might be a Russian conspiracy...

I'm at Durango now... I rode down 149 today, best road so far  cooldude ...

I stopped at one of the little gas stops in lake city, Town Square Cabins and they had
cabins available... I kind of wish I'd stayed there...

They are worried about flooding there...

When the weather gods are smiling it's time to ride. First time in the MDH when it didn't rain or there was low cloud.

DO NOT GO RIDE PAST THE BRIDGE ON HWY 507 south of Taos. It turns into a Moki Dugway dirt road. More bumps than a Turkish bellydancer.  AND STEEP IN PLACES.
