so, for those of you who hold a normal office/clerical type job, what type of pay raises does one get? I had a 2.75% pay raise today was expecting 3% (or more) since 'competent' and doing a good job no complaints and meeting all expectations doing 70% of workload vs. other co-worker lady doing 30-40% tops daily and supervisor knows it seen it and we discussed it, etc.. I mean how tight are these companies nowadays when just round the darn thing up to 3% vs. 2.75% to make it a nice round number in terms of percentage and hourly rate ending in .47 vs. .50, although the difference between 2.75 and 3% is only a few pennies per hour. Also found out thru the grapevine the 20 year employee who is mostly retired who trained me last year doing her job was making over 4 bucks per hour more than me and me doing her job competent as well. Yah, 20 years means more pay of course, but near 25% more in pay is NOT right either for doing same exact job duties daily. I once had back in the 1990s working for GM 6 years a near 3 year pay freeze and in our office of around 60, over 20 quit when that pay freeze happened the first year and another 10 the 2nd year. I was doing 3 full time jobs for one low pay and all I got out of it when the office closed and moved to another city was a pat on the back thanks from my nice supervisor for without me working 10+ hour days that past year or more the company would have closed much sooner, that and a 5 month severance pkg based on years worked. I think those days of severance pkgs. are gone as well. Have not found that DREAM job yet while my wife gets appreciated near yearly with bonuses and tons more in pay for doing 12+ hour days as she deserves.... The jobs I have left over the 30+ years always gets posted a few months later time and time and time forever, NO ONE stays, wonder why? At least I get 10 days paid vacation per year right? thought of becoming a truck driver on the open road, at least only have to deal with deliveries and not the daily grind of dealing with co-workers to do your job effectively, or so I think?

A few companies are being transparent about employees salaries, publishing within the company, from lowest, to the owner of the company. This is something that I just heard about. I feel any company receiving public dollars/subsidies or government contracts should be required to do so.

I was a lowly State gov't worker for many-many years. I went far more years sans COLA increase than we ever did with positive adjustments to "keep up". Those few we did get were never more than 2%. Usually .5 or 1%. I was happy to get a pay check. I endured for 39 1/2 years.

It’s law in my province that any government employee, contractor, charity, etc that receives more than $50,000 in public money has it published in an annual report that is made public. As one of those employees, it’s a bit of a privacy concern that everyone can see what I make, but I guess the accountability is a good thing.

Pay raise?
As a long time worker in the automotive industry, you rarely get an increase in pay until you tell them you're leaving. Crappy gamble to take. If you already lined up another gig, you may burn a bridge when you tell them you're not coming after all. If you don't accept another position first, and they don't counter offer, you may end up out of a job.
As a matter of fact, I was working for an international corporation-owned dealership. In 2009, during the really crappy times in the automotive world, we were all brought over to the alignment bay for a meeting. We all had to sign a 3.25% pay cut or lose our jobs on the spot. The high-ups in the company were still making their 7 or 8 figure incomes, but we had to tighten our belts to weather the storm. Of course, that move cost them more than they ever figured on, but I'm sure they didn't learn not to bite the hand that feeds them. They never do.
I guess it all comes down to perspective. Where I have been, if you get a raise without quitting, you've hit the jackpot.

knowing what others make in any company I have ever worked at is a big NO NO. Way too many will say, well, he/she does same job as me say in AR or AP (clerical) and I make 2-3 dollars less per hour. When most of our very similar clerical jobs are in that 16-20 dollar an hour range, it creates a major bitch session amongst employees and hardships. Just recently one of the AP clerks told me outright did NOT ask she just blurped it out that she was making mid 19.00 per hour when I know the other AP clerk near there about the same amount of time (2 years vs. near 3 years) is barely making 18 per hour. I know for a fact I am making over 4 bucks per hour LESS than the semi-retired lady been there 20 years now age 65 or 66 her being the one who trained me last year doing SAME job duties as she does daily. Yah, I know she is slightly faster/better than me and I am underpaid by 1-2 bucks per hour (or more) but she also deserves more money than me enduring 20 years of it as well, but over 4 bucks per hour more is NOT right either for doing the same exact job. Also as well know at my last job as materials handler the same level/pay grade guy doing pretty much same jobs as well (I was better than him for sure) him starting only a few weeks prior to me he was starting out at 2 bucks more per hour than me and worse worker slower and screwed up more and way less efficient. He told me without asking what he started out at so how do you think all this makes me feel???? Our lady fellow co-worker there 4-5 years already BEST worker who trained us both found out he was making MORE than HER and she was our best worker and she was pissed BIG time going to HR demanding an immediate raise. She got her raise for if she quit, that place would not last long am sure. Have also found out in prior jobs the newbies hired that I trained were making same pay as me being there a few years prior, not right either. So, as far as knowing what others make at my level, is NOT goot at all, only pisses people off more so and creates nothing but bad karma in an office/clerical setting. Now, as far as higher up people say upper level mgrs. or head honchos, that is fine as far as I am concerned since never will be one and never will be making 2-5x''s my piddly salary anyways. If you only knew all the buyouts and hush money I have paid out or seen in my lifetime it would make anyone furious enough to quit ASAP knowing how many millions were paid out for just one fricking big wig making me want to throw up in disgust. Not much surprises me anymore the past 30 years working have seen a lot of bad things happen most anywhere I have worked. It has gotten worse and worse the past 10+ years where everyone is only out for themselves no respect or care for fellow employees and no one is trusted anyone will try to throw you under the bus vs. helping each other out. I once paid out in hush money 10 grand for a very well known NON profit national organization I will remain nameless and soon after she got her bogus check I cut even after I questioned WHY to my CFO, he said never mind and just do it. She left soon after no one knowing why guessing she was going to Sue the company for some bogus reason which as far as I was concerned she was one worthless employee not worth a dime a waste of money in the first place. A good supervisor helps in most situations and unfortunately have only had 2 good supervisors EVER who knew what they were doing and knew my job duties me being below them in my lifetime and that is also sad where a supervisor does not even know how to do the jobs of their workers below them. I have that now a younger lady age 32 who 'in theory' knows our jobs but 'in reality' has never done it so no sense going to her to ask a question since doubt she would know. Also sad, wonder how she became a supervisor in the first place doesn't it?

I have seen companies move their entire office staff or certain depts. only to another US city (been thru 2 of them so far) or even much worse, outsource part of company say collections or clerical staff to mexico or 3rd world country say Phillipines who do not even barely speak English. Let me tell you first hand, that will NEVER work for it almost took down my wife's company doing that for a few months before they realized untrained and cheaper labor was destroying their company in short order. Guess what, all the long term employees who got let go doing their jobs the past 10-20 years making say only 16-20 bucks per hour never returned and years later they are still trying to find employees to stay more than 2-3 months before quitting since is so screwed up and behind will NEVER get out of the hole. And yet the big shots who decided this making 100K or much more like millions per yer think loyal employees making piddly 16-20 bucks per hour say all 10-20 of them affect the REAL bottom line on profit. those are the idiots who need their head examined for any shred of common sense....

is a tough call, here in WI most state govt jobs have great benefits like cheap insurance and good time off work, but the pay is low or can be more so depending on job. Would be nice to find a job that has both decent pay and good benefits. I left in mid 2018 my former job making 10K more in overtime per year to go to this job NO overtime allowed, now have same mediocre at best hourly pay but less drama and NO overtime since that former company wanted me also to be ON CALL 7 days a week meaning being called into work if needed for say 1 hour of work whenever when I drive 45 minutes one way there, NOT going to happen for such piddly pay, plus work weekends if need be already working 55+ hour weeks Monday thru Friday. Isn't there a law somewhere that over 60 hours per week for an hourly employee being illegal?? Left for those reasons plus my boss was a total _ss and he was salaried (no overtime pay) yet he ONLY worked 25-30 hour weeks came in 9 a.m. left at 3 p.m. and the time he was there he goofed off in front of us all cussing and swearing all that time for over 1 hour of those 6 hours there and still getting away with it have heard. Maybe if he quit cussing and goofing off and actually worked for ONCE (literally for ONCE) a true 40 hour work week things would have been better? Problem I have, now started in 2019, was in 2018 the insurance cost was super low for me and dirt cheap and low deductible but new mgmt. came in also in 2018 and totally revamped the insurance costs and deductibles to make it not even close to affordable forcing me to go on the 4K deductible plan has to be met first before pays out vs. was on the 500 deductible plan in 2018 at a reasonable cost one could afford to pay the bi-weekly premiums. Plus, one month ago I am pretty sure I somehow tore my meniscus in my other knee and will need surgery pretty sure on it same type symptons I had 8+ years ago needing surgery on other knee: unable to twist side to side without pain, unable to bend my knee fully, plus NO running, and walk with a gimp with knee getting stiff if I sit for a few hours with it bent. Not paying 4K to have surgery in 2019 if I can still walk without much difficulty and hoping I can survive until 2020 to go back on the 500 deductible plan even if it costs 6xs the amount bi-weekly will be worth it since 4K vs. 500 bucks is a lot of difference. Just wish the insurance cost did not go absurdly high in 2019 since part of reason I left other job besides shitty boss and working way long hours was the benefits were better in 2018 at this new job but now in 2019 are much worse. Always seems when NEW mgmt. comes in they screw things up making it worse and from the old timers working there 20-30 years that I work with they will be retiring in a few more years if they can hold on that is and then more work for me with no increase in pay am sure and still NO overtime allowed which is also B.S. That is the way that company works. I do not mind working some overtime, but when in 2018 I leave at 6 a.m. daily and get home 8 p.m. everyday Monday thru Friday got to be too much in 2018, then they later in 2018 come up stating have to work some weekends on top of being ON CALL anytime even if for 1 hour coming in was NOT happening. If I was young and single an no kids or family or mom to tend to, that extra 10-15K per year would be worth it, but not now for me.

I did not find out technicals of 3-4 hours of pay which doubt they did, but the one person who did do it there longer than me said the compensation for driving into work and back home was piddly not even paying for gas and somehow they jerked the pay around to make it only worth the 1 hour say you were there which was not right. Craig, the guy who did come in having a whopping 1 hour drive into work (me 45 minutes) said something in our daily meeting in front of both supervisors in charge and said compensation is not even paying for my gas to come in this far since was only needed for 15 minutes of work. Both just shrugged their shoulders and said will look into it. Craig then said maybe both of you should be on the schedule as well since could tell he was pissed off. Basically, only usually 3 of us 6 workers (3 there longer), the other 3 hired on at the same time newer, said finally we all should be on rotating on call schedules, so Daryel, the other newbie like me under 1 year there, said maybe we need a raise to compensate for so long hours since obviously not worth our time for 1 hours pay if driving near 2 hours. Plus, he said right in front of us all to both supervisors this was not what we agreed to upon hire no mention of on call schedules every few weeks or so on weekends or at nights weekdays and maybe they should hire someone then to work full time just weekends and nights since obviously we were 2-3 people short staffed already. Supervisors and mgrs. getting paid double or triple do not care about pions lives apparently? Definitely a place for young single people with no families or lives outside of work which most working there were. The last week I was there giving 2 weeks notice, I was suppose to be ON Call and told boss not doing it. He said why not, I said busy which I was that weekend will not be around locally so he said fine, find someone else to cover for you or else you would have to still be ON CALL. Even if I did not find someone to be on call, I still would not have come in even if did get a on call phone message. What they going to do, fire me?

Cookie, Sounds to me like you should be job hunting. With the economy like it is, company's are searching high and low for employees.

Yah, have been seems like forever. Had only 2 real good jobs in 30 years working that I would feel comfy staying the rest of my life, but both moved to another city or state not willing to relocate. One thing I did learn in my performance review from boss is NOT go too low just to get an interview since they offered me the low range of what I put down of what I would consider and when I asked for 25 cents more than the lowest I wrote to come very close to matching what I made at other shitty place, HR said NO not able to which was total B.S. since found out others requested more and got it after the interview when offered the job. Always go with FIRST instincts since was ASAP NOT going to take it and say NO, only take job if give me that 25 cents more per hour will I accept offer. Knowing what I know now, pretty sure they would have said YES if I stuck to my guns. I also do not believe my supervisor has absolutely NO say in percentage of wage or hourly rate she said is totally up to HR which I find more often than not HR knows jack diddly about the jobs being done since when HR said NO to that 25 cents, I called my potential supervisor and she said she has no say in starting pay.
