Spent last night in Valparaiso, thought I had lost one of my credit cards. Stopped to gas up 1/2 mile from the hotel and it was missing, used a different card but wondered what happened to the first choice. Called the hotel but they didn't have it. Headed back there and they let me in the room to see if it had fallen somewhere and I didn't see it....dark card on dark carpet. No joy, so called TGI Fridays where I ate dinner the night before. Bingo! Short time later I had my card. First time I have ever done that....leave it in the folder they hand you with the bill.
Headed west with the intention of meeting up with da Prez and O2S. Was not to be. Using the GPS I tried following directions which took me onto tollways. Their toll charges make absolutle no sense. One booth it was $1.10 for just the car but with the trailer it cost $2.80. Wait....a 1200 lb. load on a 2 wheel trailer costs more than the SUV towing it. Later, same thing....charged me $1.90 for the SUV plus another $2.75 when adding the trailer. Five miles later, another $4.75, and five miles later....guess what? I finally got off the interstate with the intent of finding a different route, all to no avail. The phone with Google maps and my GPS had me going in circles and way out of my way. Finally gave up, got directions on how to get to Ogdne Ave. and headed west until I didn't see anything but farms. Finally headed north and arrived at my daughter's place late this evening....very tired.
Upset I didn't get to see the brothers but I got so irritated with the whole travel scene through the god forsaken hole called Chicago and its suburbs, I had no desire to continue. Tomorrow I'll unload the bike and give it a badly needed cleaning after nearly 2k miles through numerous rain storms, dust & dirt...it's a mess. Saturday morning I'll drive over to the kids camper on a lake for a little R&R with them. Time to relax and unwind.

Time to relax and unwind.
Enjoy the time with family, friends and the passions of your life. Seems to me you have your priorities lined up and set in the right order. That invite (should you get lost) is still open to visit KY. Though after 26 July, you'll have to come to Mississippi for that free dinner. Rams

never understood why IL charges for a trailer along with the car/truck pulling it BOTH? I could not avoid going out of my way when I picked up my new enclosed trailer from Indiana and found that out the hard way. Normally, I drive 50-100 miles AROUND the tolls, if possible, since it seems like although not as quick mileage wise, the main interstates with tolls are sometimes so backed up is not much quicker time wise, plus the expense in tolls is sometimes more than the gas wasted trying to go thru areas out of the way to avoid them.
IMO, if IL is going to have tolls, they need to NOT have 30-45 minutes sitting in stop and go traffic just to piss you off more so having to pay to use their stupid road systems.
Heard WI is thinking of putting some tolls in on their interstates, better NOT! At least with WI, you can more so go AROUND the interstates to get somewhere although much longer mileage wise though since most side roads are rural country county roads going thru smaller towns. I say put ONLY ONE toll only on the interstates in WI coming from IL border is all.....

Yup-the tolls in the land of Lincoln-ya just KNOW Abe be rollin in his grave-are outrageous. Try herdin an 18 wheeler around in this area. Anywho John Ross sez the tolls would have been worth the meal you missed here last night. Stuffed chicken breast fresh green beans and ice bold Heiny. Breakfast-just finished-waffles with real butter and either raw Arkansas honey or Dutchmens lime curd preserves. I will NOT even mention the good conversation we all missed! Anywho glad yer safe with your family John. Maybe next time. RIDE SAFE.

Wish I had known you were in Valpo. We could have met up as the hotel you stayed at is a mile from my house.

Your Headlight kit was delivered, hopefully that was a pleasant surprise. Let me know if you need any assistance getting that installed. And of course post pics when it is installed!

Yup, it was sitting here waiting for me when I got in. Nice looking kit, will unload the bike and try installation soon. As for the tolls in Illinois(funny the state name starts with "Ill"), the total paid in tolls would have paid for the extra gas used up trying to get the heck out of there. Dennis & Ross, sorry I missed out on that meal and chat session but I was at my wits end and just wanted out of there. Can't believe I used to live in a west side burb and worked in the loop when first out of the USAF. Took the CB&Q in every day and home at night, worked for Xerox in the city until they gave me Argonne Nat'l. Lab as my territory. That was interesting cuz I got to see stuff the public didn't.

Just let me know if or when, long as it's not the weekends. I'll be at their camper drowning worms and enjoying cooler weather. Also plan to take in the Airventure show in Oshkosh durting the week of the 22nd but only one day, too much walking for more than that.

am sure back in the 1980's and even earlier the traffic was not as congested as it is pretty much anywhere nowadays. I am struggling getting to and especially from work daily right now many ways to get to Madison WI but they just closed down for over 1 week my shortcut rural road to avoid the multiple contruction zones digging roads up everywhere SW side coming in thru Verona side into westside area. One project has been torn up for 2 fricking years now and says will be done before winter but have my doubts the way they are dinking around. Beltline traffic in 80's starting going up there was easy and stress free vs. NOW do not even consider going on beltline from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. takes 45 minutes to go 10 miles NO JOKE is almost as bad as L.A. I would imagine.

And Ill. just about doubled their gas tax! Go figure.
Will be heading up to Tomahawk, Wi. starting the 25th and arriving late on the 27th. Going through Ill. just plain irks the Hell out of me with their roller coaster bumpy roads, tolls, and high fuel costs.

Pappy, you and Lesa ought to fly into Appleton and rent a car unless you're towing/bringing something with you. I gassed up on the Indiana side and just made it across the border into Wisconsin. Stiil pretty high for a state(s) with major ports for offloading oil in addition to pipelines. Illinois has been run by a Democratic machine for as long as I remember and has been in financial straits most of that time. I remember well over a half century ago when OLD mayor Daley was in power, the Chicago buget was less than the income but for some reason the city was always in the red. Things that make you go "hmmm." What's that old saying...."the more things change, the more they stay the same.!" Guess so!

That's about 2.5 hrs. NW of where I'm staying. I've had enough driving for a while, see ya back home. Enjoy the cooler weather and lower humidity.
