bald eagles surely are a sight to see, especially up close and personal.  I think they are rebounding, at least in my area,  where they are seen quite regularly mostly over larger rivers in the area.   Are they even still on the endangered list?

Grin just for a little more info, so as to alleviate your possible arousal. We had just got there and were busy catching up with family. I’m sitting there talking to my sister in law, and the eagle flies 20’ over my head with a wounded sea gull in its talons. He (or she) took it to nest and started ripping it apart and feeding the chicks. If you look close in the pic, you can see some feathers and a carcass. It was a pretty cool start to our Alaska trip.  cooldude

They are still protected but got off the endangered list a few years ago.

Rob,

Thanks for the post & pic! Amazing creatures for sure... The most by far I've ever seen were in Alaska... a sanctuary state of sorts, I reckon... Looks like you have a 'bird's eye view'!

That was really cool.

When we rented the wing in Ketchikan we saw  large numbers of bald eagles in trees and taking turns swooping into the water for fish.  Just very special indeed.

Have a great trip Rob.

Oss

You can also find one soaring just over your head by about the same distance while on the goat trail all year round.  That gets the adrenaline going  Cool  Maybe a stop at eagle lookout will be on the agenda in October

Years ago I was on water paddling a canoe, Upper Michigan.

Floating along a creek through a swampy area and an Osprey flew overhead with a fish in its claw.

A Bald Eagle zoomed in. Did a partial roll alongside the Osprey and snatched the fish away  Shocked

one of the great things I find in the area where I live, is that I get to see eagles on every rides.  I even have watch them zoom in a take ground squirrels.  Long way to water where one normally thinks of them.  Have an area about 40 miles to the south (yeah in CA) where we see them a lot in the winter time.

Not sure but believe that bald eagles area still on the endangered list.

Not sure but believe that bald eagles area still on the endangered list.

From this site:
Quote
It wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s that Bald Eagles became an emblem of the environmental movement as their numbers plummeted from the effects of the pesticide DDT. Once DDT was banned and the species was fully protected under the fledgling Endangered Species Act, however, eagle numbers began to rebound, gradually at first and then with increasing vigor. In 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the Bald Eagle from the federal endangered species list.

Riding home from the Valhalla rally this June, on Hwy 3 somewhere east of Princeton, BC, My daughter and I saw two bald eagles, one larger and one smaller, fighting in mid air.  They grappled for a second or so, then separated to interrupt their fall.  I'd never seen eagles fighting before; an amazing sight that my daughter got a better look at because I had to keep us on the road.

We have them around here too. Their status as national symbols don't
seem to have swelled their heads... I was riding down in the low country
once and came around a curve and a bald eagle was standing around there
on the side of the road with five or six buzzards...

Why were they walking to the car?  How can they drive without opposable thumbs?

Came across this gal last weekend up at one of my favorite fly fishing lakes...Coquihalla Lake, about 40 minutes from home. Took photos of her at one end of the lake, then saw her again here at the other end about 30 minutes later. I don't think she was heading to her vehicle though, 'cause the clearing where we park is in the other direction Wink

Always lots of critters, eagles and ospreys, etc to view at this and some of my other local fishin' spots so even when I'm not having a lot of fish action, I'm never bored while floating around in the lake Wink

One of the most memorable occasions in my life was using the expertise of golden eagles to locate thermals for circling in to climb with a hang glider.  Look around if you are flying thermals not ridge lift, for the big birds - if they are circling they are working a thermal.  Fly over there and join them.  Interestingly, they would accept you as another bird not a threat.  Quite the feeling to circle in thermal lift with your fellow expert aviators as guides!  I wish I had videos of it - I usually flew with a camcorder on my keel but didn't capture this.  Here's my sled ride, first flight off Williams Peak just East of the Eagle's Nest Wilderness, I did post.  I have some very long videos rather than sled rides not posted, as they need edits and music.  And they were filmed with 1990's tech - tape camcorder so not the hi-res of today's Hero cameras.

P.S. I didn't know Bruce was banned.  Shame on him for messin with our bird!

The skidder is used to launch and retrieve the boats.
