Battery question
«
on:
July 20, 2019, 08:34:44 AM »
I took my battery out the other day to do some maintainance. While it was out I took it inside and put it on my battery tender.
Sure enough I lost one of the little nuts that go under the terminal.
My first question. why are motorcycle batteries designed that way?
Second, can you use any nut to replace the one that is missing?
Thanks

They use a nut underneath, because the soft lead terminals really can't be threaded; torquing, they'd just be stripped out with minimal pressure. Space is at a minimum, so they don't use car-style clamps going sideways.
You can use any nut that will fit under there and fit the screw. Most nuts are hex, the battery one is square.
You could walk the screw to the hardware/home depot and try to find one to fit. Maybe take the other square nut with you for comparrison. Any bike shop will have spares laying round.
One trick to getting the screw to thread into the nut at the bottom of the terminal underneath, is to squeeze a bit of foam rubber under the nut, to hold it up toward the top.
If shopping, buy a small tube of dielectric grease to use for the hookups. Though I've never had the chronic corrosion on my bike batteries like I have on my cars/trucks.
Here's your sizes:
