I picked up a Ciro Phone mount (https://www.ciro3d.com/product/50000-premium-smartphone-gps-holder#) for my new girl, and ... it works.  But I think I'd rather find a mount that I can put just above the triple tree.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for such a mount? Or a way to make this work?

I even thought about a magnetic tank bag, but I really am not sure.

This setup

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Motorcycle-Bicycle-Handlebar-Cell-Phone-Bolt-Mount-with-USB-Charger-/264278051180?nav=SEARCH

works really well.  Uses a RAM mount compatible ball, so your mounting options are endless.  Also has a USB port charging.

If you remove the bar across the risers and replace them with clamps from a VT1100 shadow or from a VTX1300. Then the bar is available in the middle. All you need is the top clamp, not the whole riser.

I've also seen guys just glue down Velcro across the big OE riser top-clamp,  Then Velcro the phone cover backside and stick them together.

Of course, without the phone/GPS on there, you've got some ugly Velcro on the clamp all the time.

I'd go with this solution.

My I/S has a split-clamp setup with a RAM ball on the bars, and an arm plus mounting plate which holds the controller for the CD changer is mounted to it.

The Tourer also has this setup, but I attached the handlebar mount for the control head of an FTM-10SR ham radio rig instead of a RAM ball.

I recently bought a Ram Mount and it works great, make sure you check the size of your phone compared to which one you get. I think they are one of the higher rated mounts.

I'd also check one of the sites that sells Ram Mounts.  They are extremely well made and versatile.  I have several.

I replaced the large caps on the tree with two separate ones for the Shadow 1100.

Then I bought the Kuryakyn Accessory mount. Here's one listed on ebay for $32
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Kuryakyn-Standard-Accessory-Handlebar-Mount-Black-Mount-and-Pivot-Plate-1671/193016332891?epid=171125465&hash=item2cf0ab825b:g:P4sAAOSwngldO5kc

Then you can buy a RAM mounting holder based on whatever GPS or SmartPhone you want to mount. They mount easily enough to the Kuryakyn mount with the scews they provide.
They run about $10. Here's an example of one for a Garmin 1490 GPS.

But... I really like that large cap on the tree.  I'm working on a plan that involves my son-in-law with a 3d printer.

Hopefully it's an add-on, rather than a replacement for the top clamp. I wouldn't want to go with a part of lesser strength in that application.

I have split caps on both my bikes, but I think if I still had the OEM cap
on the 1500 I'd probably drill a hole in it and mount some kind of ram
ball on a stalk there...

I'm actually against the X-Grip now that I switched to my Quad Lock. Always had an issue with the rubber securement that I had to use with the X-Grip. Quad lock is easy to mount and dismount phone, and has a minimalistic profile. Most secure I have ever felt my phone on my bike.

That sounds so sacrilegious.  But then again, it might be what I end up doing.  ;-)

I picked up this mount some time ago on ebay for Jade.  Holds the phone well but delivers the wrong volts in the power port.  The phone thinks it's charging but the battery % never goes up.  I had to run a longer wire from another USB port off my 12v socket.  Not recommended due to bad port.

This is hands down, the best and most secure phone holder you can find for your bike. I have mine attached to my handlebars.
