Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: July 28, 2019, 07:09:53 PM »

Do you have those, too? We all do, I reckon, so there's not much point in spending any time describing them here. Still… I never thought of myself so much as being one of those, but… who knew? Certainly I do have some friends who could justifiably count me as a very 'needy' person, indeed!

I'm now on another road trip… I was to meet-up with Troutdude and cruise on out to Calgary, AB, where we're to then join-up with Water Bug, who is flying up from Louisiana. Dennis wants to show Shelia (his dearly beloved) the Canadian Rockies, in particular the Icefields Parkway, and I was invited along to share the adventure.

Naturally, Dennis had a lengthy list of honey-dos, an even longer list of obligations and commitments, and even a few dozen personal items all requiring attention before he could head out. I had none of those! I was ready to pack a bag as soon as he made the invite!

Alas, I forced myself to patiently wait for a time closer to a realistic departure window for Dennis… before heading out myself. Another matrimonially impaired friend of mine, Big Wolf, seemed interested in getting out for a couple of days of riding, … however… he had to get over the obvious hurdles in his path, too… Spousal objections, honey-dos, projects, yadda, yadda… Still, a time did finally come, so off I rode to hook-up with Jerry in Eufaula, AL.

Now, before anybody starts to raise doubts concerning my ability to exercise patience or anything, let me remind everyone about Hurricane Barry. Not a biggie like powerful Katrina, mercifully, but one still very heavily laden with moisture (read rain!!!). Yep, once again Jerry and I found ourselves having to plan, change plans, re-plan… all that drudgery stuff to try to figure out what Mother Nature was clearly steering us towards… and away from!

As if all that rain wasn't enough to contend with, a monster heat wave followed closely behind Barry… Dang! Could it be possible this road trip just wasn't supposed to be? Nah… Good old Mother Nature was probably just giving us a little 'spice' to help us embellish future tales we'll surely be telling to all of our other pals who remained home-bound and didn't make it out… our less fortunate brethren and sistren…

I departed my land-lady's house around 4am to get a major jump on the heat sure to envelop my travel route once the solar orb had gained some altitude. A solid plan that worked to near perfection… Perfection would have been arriving in Eufaula an hour or so earlier. Nope, I didn't entirely miss the heat! However, I did miss the worst of it, and most of the ride was actually rather pleasant.

I arrived early enough to have plenty of time for a power nap and some serious relaxation before Jerry rolled in. He'd managed the heat rather well, all things considered. Since his last really 'hot ride', he'd come up with several innovations to ease the unpleasantness, but the primary thing, he speculated, was the adjustment he and his doctor had made to his medications.  He had a surprise for me, too…

On our ride to IZ beginning in mid-May, he'd observed my constant struggle with all the baggage I carry (a long story), and worse, he'd daily witnessed the problem I was having with the duffle-type bag I strapped to the 'luggage rack', and in particular how the bag drooped down on the ends and made opening the saddle bags a royal pain… reminiscent of trying to extract one's hand from a cookie-jar with a very small opening, while attempting to remove way too many cookies…

Jerry is another of those types who don't just see a problem, bellyache about it, but then just put up with it… Nope, he ponders, stews, and frets on it, then comes up with a solution to remedy the issue. He'd made a 'plate' the size of that bag out of some sheet aluminum he had back at his house, and he'd designed it so that it would easily hold my bag, yet allow easy access to the saddle bags during the day. I call it my new 'shelf'.

The shelf

Three bolts/nuts and two aluminum 'straps/bars' secure the appendage… No holes to drill, nothing permanent to the attachment at all.

Dennis calls it 'the whale tail'; and, it does resemble one, I suppose… However, for now I think I'll stick with 'the shelf'. A variation of several we've seen by other riders, many made of wood and all apparently functional and not unattractive… So far I really like it, and it has proven its worth already! I had a need, my friend Big Wolf provided a solution.

Jerry and I pulled out early to avoid some of the heat (yeah, that heatwave was still cranking!), and we headed for Montgomery, AL. I have several buds there, and a party had been mentioned for that evening… We arrived ahead of normal check-in time, so we sat in the motel lobby… Jerry watched TV, and I caught a power nap. Soon, we were checked in, so it was now time to settle in our room and… take a more serious nap! Then, we got ready for the evening and waited for our ride to arrive…

Been waiting for your trip to start and read the reports and see the pics....since my summer roaming is done all too soon and I’ve returned to the daily grind.

Looking forward to tagging along with you, if only in spirit   cooldude

Nice mod.

The other way to assist in getting in and out of bags with a big load, is to convert to interstate cable ties on the lids.

Speaking of needy, I thought just the other day that it had been some time since we had heard from you.  Hope the trip goes well.  When unloaded your new apparatus looks sort of like a rear wing.

Hope you have a wonderful adventure.
Jerry is one of those gents that sees a challenge and ponders on it till he has a solution.   He’s also a fine dude! cooldude

Looks well made. Bruce, don’t overload those duffle bags weight wise. Put the heavier stuff in the saddle bags. With that much volume and the size creating increased leverage and stress on the rack. It would be easy to overload the luggage rack, it can break.

Mine hasn't broken... yet...

I know of several that have, though... those folded metal racks seem much more studly
than the square-tube OEM ones...

My long rides now are generally on the black bike, it has a folded metal rack...

It is hard to keep the weight down... filled with a week's worth of clothes my
Givi weighs like a brick.

Bruce, is Jerry going to Canada with you and Dennis? I was planning on stopping to see him on my way back to Flori-duh in about 10 days....plus/minus a day or so. As for your trip north of the border, I'm jealous and would love to make the same trip. But it looks like I'll be returning to my home town for the last nearly 53 yrs. and start packing to make a transition to be nearer my daughter. Be safe up yonder, they have good beer(so I'm told).  Roll Eyes

Made one several years ago, very near the same from 3/16" thick aluminum diamond plate . Secured to the OEM rack the very same way. Worked like a charm to stabilize a T-Bag. Kept it from drooping over the rear and obscuring the tail light from traffic behind. Polished up nice to resemble chrome.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  I am glad that “whale tail” is working out well.  I would have polished and clear coated it but thought that could wait until we knew if it would work ok.  After all, I made it without  a pattern and without having a touring bike to try it on.  I was not sure it would work at all until we bolted it on ALI and opened a saddlebag.

Yes, I quite often watched the luggage on ALI slipping ever farther to the side and sometimes obscuring the tail light.  Some of the time it was fun just to watch it slip and flop and bob around.   Grin. A few times the dance of that luggage got precarious enough that I would stop Bruce and suggest he reposition and re-secure his luggage.  Maybe Bruce and his luggage will be traveling just a little bit safer now.

John,
I too am jealous that I am not able to make that trip north of the border with them at this time.  Maybe next summer.

Yes, I will be home through most of August.  I do have a commitment to be in Knoxville Aug 16-18 but other than that, I will be at home in Rickman/Cookeville, TN.

Very cool Jerry.    cooldude  Glad you're watching out for the bug killer's safety.   Sharp looking whale tail-shelf.   Maybe with a short section of 2x4 under the kickstand it can double as a wet bar!   Like I mentioned when you were showing me your trunk mount,  you are a talented fellow!

been thinking of doing that on my scooter made of thin yet sturdy aluminum not able to flex, but not as big as that whale tail for sure no cycle rack underneath just use say over the 3 longer bolts plastic black PVC cut 1 inch up or so to raise about 1 inch up is all the aluminum plate.  I have a pretty big soft sided cloth/canvas luggage compartment that would hold more than any large GIVI hard trunk can which would store lots of stuff.  I also have soft sided cloth saddlebags and center cloth bag in the center between legs upfront plus huge underseat storage to have enough storage space for the ultimate storage machine more so storage than any other cycle on the road for sure.  IN the end, I would have 8 storage areas on my scooter if counting the 3 smaller compartments upfront that will hold say a water bottle or wallet/cell phone in each plus the other one  about 10x10 inches cloth bag that I strapped onto/over my handlebars.   A prius does not have anything on me for storage....... 2funny

at first I thought reading the heading NEEDY friends,  I thought your neighbors or friends (both) were always constantly asking you to help out or do favors for them.  I had one neighbor like that but he moved to yuppie Madison WI yet he still bugs me to come on over and help him or ask me for my opinion of which he would rarely listen to me anyways and a month later he comes back and says I should have listened to me to begin with.  Happened again last Friday after work he texted me to come on over to his house vs. going home and texted him back saying I had to be somewhere before they close at 445 p.m. which this time was true not fibbing to him.....   Grin   His wife wears the pants in the family and he wants to buy a small cycle or mid sized scooter but his wife says NO.  I say get rid of wife.... 2funny
