Weird thing is that I was planning to attend, but skipped to join the 'Basics of Rifle shooting' (Saturday) + 'Utah's CCW' (Sunday) course this weekend.

There was no room for the Sunday's course, but someone cancelled at the last minute and made the spot available.

Since the course in Sunday was over past 3:30PM (and driving to Gilroy would take 50 minutes, I instead decided to celebrate my birthday going to a Brazilian steakhouse in Cupertino (15 minutes drive).

I think I dodged the bullet in this one (literally).

It seems like these large group of humans events are getting more and more dangerous.

I daresay he violated more important laws than possessing and using a firearm while underage (while not under adult supervision).  Murder comes to mind.

Minimum age laws are good laws, but like all the other 10,000 laws and regulations (individually and collectively), they do not prevent criminal use of firearms. And never will.  

The only way to stop an active shooter is a good guy with a gun.  Not more laws and regulations (which only affect the law abiding).

Handguns are fun and useful.  But there's a reason the world's infantry divisions carry rifles.  Keep up the rifle training.

Make no mistake I am sorry for the victims and relatives that were hurt but they were a very, very small minority.

There were at least a thousand and maybe as many as three thousand people at the event when the shootings took place.  Fifteen people were injured or slain.  Of the people at the event at the time the odds were at most between one and two in a hundred.

Mystery.  At least three of the victims were of the same family, likely in one small group.  The shooter had a minute to reach his goals.  Either he was targeting specifically or was just not very good at what he did.  I'm thankful he wasn't better.

Terrorists impact a few people to give the impression that everyone is at risk.  We play right into the strategy by widely publicizing and over emphasizing the events.

The real similarity between an SKS and an AK-47 is the ammo, 7.62x39mm.  Didn’t see if his had the removable magazine feature, but most SKS have a fixed 10 round mag fed by stripper clips.

You have to be pretty practiced to load rounds using stripper clips with any speed and proficiency.

Not familiar with CA gun laws, but in many states you can purchase rifles and shotguns as long as they are legal to own in your resident state.  Handguns have to be purchased at an in-state gun shop or through an in-state FFL.  Will be interesting to see how this weapon made it into this losers hands.  Hope he’s residing in hell.

The coroner says the shooter committed suicide.

It doesn't even take a coroner to distinguish between a self inflicted (contact) SKS (7.62 X 39) wound, and a handgun wound (from farther).  The SKS has a 20" bbl (though shorter 16" paratrooper models are available).

It's good that he's dead, but one wonders why the cops claimed the kill.  Did they shoot and miss?  That's always embarrassing, especially in a crowd (and 12 were wounded, besides the 3 dead).  Of course, their quick response clearly led to his quick suicide. 

Still no clear motive.  (besides being a defective unit)
