I bought a new hood for my zombie apocalypse/forest road 1998 4 Runner.

It's brand new (Made in Taiwan) and painted black primer. $73 from Carparts.com + $180 s & h to me.

I want to rattle can paint it. What's the best brand to buy. Once painted I will then spray clear coat it as well.

I do intend to fine sand the primer before paint so I can get that showroom finish  Grin

zombie apocalypse/forest road 1998 4 Runner

I missed the particulars on that model.  What does the rest of the paint look like?

One of these?

It's a toss up with rattle can.

You can try (and probably fail) to get a close match to existing color.  But maybe close is good enough.

Or you can just do a contrast color you can live with.  Or just leave it black primer, or shoot black (or other color) satin over top of it and call it good.   I think satin is easier to rattle can than gloss (or it hides imperfect rattle can application better than gloss, which shows everything).

I don't know what rattle can is best.

I might drive over to some local auto body/bump shop and just ask what it would take to shoot it for you.... OFF the truck should be easier/cheaper, no masking.

If that's too steep, ask their paint guy about best rattle can while you're there.

After you ask him about rattle can, his quote to shoot it for you may come down.   Smiley

If you do a contrast color, remember your state DMV (and cops) may want an amended paint description in your official vehicle record.  Although back in the day, I doubt all those guys driving around beaters full of red/brown primer ever changed their paint codes.

A pale imitation of the monster above. Mine is more of the $1500 beater variety.  Cheesy

Nothing ever frickin simple.

Unpacked the hood this morning to find

I suppose I could use it as a zombie prodder but I fear a real human could damage themselves on it.

Looks like a manufacturing problem. All the shipping boxes are in good shape and the primer paint isn't damaged at all.

Waiting to hear back from Carparts.com

You paint the hood on that thing black, and the black and white SUV in the rear view mirror (you) looks like a copper, and folks will get out of your way.

For years people think my black IS with extra lights is a cop bike coming up on them, and they all slow down, and I create my own traffic jams, so it's a two edged sword.

______

With no kink, that smooth bend should be easily hammer-out-able, but not at your expense.

Get a quick estimate then see if they will refund you that much, vs shipping a new one from Taiwan (and paying return shipping on the bent one).

They agree to repair it, maybe you have an in with a bump shop for paint too.

If it didn't happen in shipping they packed it that way (nice QC).  crazy2

Do you keep the bent one, or return it?

Keep

Big channel lock pliers with cloth padded jaws and I did a pretty good job straightening the zombie prodder.

I've used DupliColor from Pep Boys and have had good success.  You must follow the timing instructions carefully - two coats of the color, two coats of clear laquer, with a certain number of minutes between each coat.  It's as close to a professional paint job as you can get.

I'm using Rustoeum. Pretty good match to vehicle. Also built an outdoor spray booth from the shipping boxes it came in. Underside painted and 1 coat on top so far. Have to do it on the dry days.

Regular rattle can paint won't last, especially when exposed to engine heat and sunlight.  Two part paint is much more durable and lasts longer, but harder to work with.

I''m about to do the same thing as you, so bought a can of 2 part catalyzed clear (Peter Kwasny Spray paint, made in Germany, sold in US.) $30 for 12 oz can. It has two chambers inside that you join with an included plunger tool that activates the paint.  Fingers crossed.

I watched some YouTube's that featured 2 padt. If I bought that it would cost nearly as much as the SUV. I'll be 7 cans in including clear coat.

Ta-Da.

I used 3000 grit wet after the last coat of paint before applying the clear coat. I could feel the difference, paint was smoother to the touch after the 3000.

Removing the old hood and fitting the new one was really easy.
