Hello,we I just changed the timing belts on valkrie, had no issues.Bike has been running a bit rough off bottom, but eas getting better. After I changed timing bets, triple checked per the service manual, could hardly start bike. When it did start, ran rough, backfired, got a little better, but much worse than before I did change.

Here is the order of what I did:

1. Change plugs check gap,ran pretty good.

2.Checked valve clearance, all spot on ,no adjustment.

3.Changed timing belts had a bit of a time getting the pulse generators back on properly, wires are real short. But got on seems ok as far as the seating of them..

4.tried to start bike, runs rough I am wondering,if I got wires for pulse generators maybe pinched does not look like it,or could there be some dirt on them causing issus.?

The good news is I did not lunch any valves no nouse, all good.It seems like timing off,but this bike has no manual timing.......kind of perplexed..

Thanks for any response.

If you had a rough time with the pulse generators, I would suggest going back there and look for your trouble. Maybe remove the right belt, tensioner, and pulse generator bolts. Look for the trouble that causedthem to be a problem,, maybe they aren't seated correctly.

As far as the original problem,,, sounds like carburetor issues. Maybe a cleaning is in order when this is ironed out.

Good luck

Double check all the timing marks. One tooth off is easy to miss and will cause the performance issues you have

Ok,hello again, must report my findings so others are helped.Well I kept thinking, it ran good till I touched it.Make a long story short, the timing was  spot on with all marks. No tooth off.But i remember how i had a hard time with pulse generators.Took left side belt off, swapped the generators around, started up beatifully!!!I was so happy,Leland before I did any starting, I followed service manual to a t,AND rotatedthe engine several times just to be Anal, lol. Now I am going g to double check bolt tightness, pull cover back on.It makes sense about timing, because the pulse generators are magnets, sensing the tooth on the crank rotor passing by.So now those pulses are arriving at different time, then original, screwing up my timing. That is what I did,lol and works.

Why did you touch the pulse generators?  you can do the belts without removing them

I touched the pulse generators because the service manual sa was d to .I  did not want to take a chance and :

1.Damage the clutch side belt by being a gorilla.

2. Did not want to take chance whilst trying to get the clutch side belt off and bumping the pulleys out of alignment.

3.So,after all above, just wanted to be e tra careful, dont need additional  heart ache.

I take pics before removing these kind of things. My iphone makes it easy to video an assembly and get more angles to review if it ever became necessary. Btw, a week after reinstalling the timing belt cover, I discovered a loose bolt hanging ½-inch out of the cover. Actually, waving at me. Don't know how that happened and hadn't happened before either. I had applied locktite on all the bolts. Manual doesn't specify a torque value for the bolts.

I read 10Nm on page 1-13 (standard value for 6mm bolts, if not specified different below)

Good for you finding the PG issue! Not sure how many more times you’ll get the opportunity to change timing belts, but our club has done it so many times I can’t count them. We’ve found that we can slip the old belts/new belts off/on and just loosen the pulse generators. No need to remove the wire retainer on the left side either. That way there’s no chance of swapping the things. I had no idea she’d even run that way but apparently so, just badly. Good deal on doing your own maintenance. Even if you don’t get it right the first time chances are you’ll be ahead of taking it to a stealer. Most of them won’t even work on them anymore.
