Looks like she was doing around 25 mph or so.   A jolting experience,  unfortunately I can relate all too well.

Texting driving should have the same penalties as DUI.

They should come up with some common sense cell phone laws.  And everyone who buys one should have to pass a federal background check.

Mt Pleasant Tx passed a city law that you can be ticketed if you are driving and continue to look down while driving. Friend of my wife  got one, she said she wasn't but did not matter. She said her phone was in her purse on the floor when the cop came to the window. I would say her purse has a very large opening and she's a good shot.

There is a simple solution to this problem. Car manufacturers could or Cell companies could make them inoperable when moving at more than a walking pace. Would be easy and if someone caught disabling this feature on car or phone faces a federal charge and a felony at that, it would go a long way to solving this problem. We all here remember the days before cell phones, would it hurt any of your feelings if they all went away? It wouldnt mine.

I agree, would not hurt my feelings either!

However, what if your driving with a passenger and they want to use the phone?
The wife and I do this all the time. Mostly she does her business/stuff and on occasion I'll hand her my phone and dictate what I want to text.

I always think what we did "Pre-cellphone" days. Called from the house, made arraignments when/where to meet and went from there.
Sad thing if someone needed to change plans after you left, you needed to get back to the house to see if they left a message, probably mad/irritated that they didn't meet you!
But with the advent of cellphone nowadays it is still a huge time savings if you need to pull over out of traffic and call or answer a call, right?

A little scary cellphone story:

A buddy of mine was sitting at a red light on his bike and noticed the car behind him was stopped way far back, he thought it was kinda strange.
He heard screeching brakes, then a crash and he said all of a sudden he was in the middle of the intersection, sitting on his pillion not able to reach the ground (he’s kinda short)!
He and his bike fell over in the middle of the intersection! Luckily for him there were no cars crossing at that time as this is one of the busiest intersections in this two-horse town!

The lady in the car behind him, that stopped so far back, noticed the car behind her was coming up FAST and the driver, a young girl, was on her phone and not paying attention!!
Sure enough the girl rams the lady who in-turn gets pushed into my buddy on his bike shoving him up on his pillion into the middle of the intersection!!

He said this happened so fast there was NO time to react!!
He ended up with a bit of road rash and $1200 damage on his Fatboy, but it would’ve been a way worse outcome if the girl hit him directly!
Or if there were cars crossing! (People fly through this intersection a lot trying to beat the light!)
He counts his blessings everyday that the lady behind him was that observant!

While I wuz still driving 18 wheeler the company changed up their satellite ops. When I first started you could look at your computer screen while driving and YES I wuz as guilty as anyone else for looking at the screen while driving. The change in ops policy you ask? The red message light would come one the computer would beep twice BUT you had to STOP completely with parking brake set to see the message. If it was an Emergency message it kept beeping. I've advocated fer a few years right here in our little community for cell phones and other devices to TURN OFF COMPLETELY when vehicle is moving. Your device should let you know you have a message and the sender could determine whether the message is important enough for you to STOP SAFELY and take the message just from the tone or something else that suites YOU. And SURPRISESURPRISE Not all the texting distracted folks are teeny boppers. Some gray heads are guilty too. I absofrikkinlutely REFUSE to answer my cell phone while driving. Too cursed busy dodging other "drivers" that Are TEXTING and DISTRACTED.  Lips Sealed Again-ain't a livin soul that has the "right" too take my sorry azz out!  tickedoff RIDE SAFE.

Words to live (and ride) by --
"It isn't paranoria if they ARE out to get you (even unintentionally)"

"Ride Like you're invisible (to most of them, you are)"

"always have a backup plan"

Any other good ones to add ?

Shoot driving texters on sight.    (I wish)

At least some wait till the red light.  And then don't see the green light (they rely on horns for when it's time to go; just like blind drivers).

It's like a third of all drivers have Attention Deficit Disorder.  A high percentage of which were never good drivers to begin with.

If they can't disable driving cell phones, then make driving cell phones emit harmful radiation or something (thinking outside the box).   Grin

By this time, I am not sure why there is not an app on your phone that you would need to use to start your car and in doing so disable all text and email access and only allow phone access.

Had almost the exact same thing happen. Totaled my V_45 Sabre I finally had looking really good. Then the cop informs me he could write me a ticket because I was knocked into the car in front of me. He was telling me this while I'm laying in the hospital bed in ER. I agree with the disable texting most people are saying but you still need to be able to use your phone in emergency.

To tell the truth I am not good at quick responses like that, I wish I was. To add insult to injury they left my bike in a parking lot. When I got back to it the clutch lever was broke off. Any other time they would have towed it. I had a lot of tickets in that town when I was a younger man, I think they just wanted to stick it to me a little.
