House we bought in 2017 built in 2004 has a heatilator  fireplace on the kitchen wall bricked in 8'x8'. Big kitchen 20x20. Has a glass front that could be sealed tight. The heatilator  did have where it could use outside air but needed to be done when installed. It has an ash dump in the bottom, 4" out from the back centered, 4"x 8" opening  going down at an angle to the outside opening of 9"x 9" that has a door on it. I want to bring in outside air through the ash dump opening fabricated from heavy channel and square tubing going to the front and T- ing going to the sides and up 3/4 way where air will enter fire box.. Will colder air be able to draw in when a hot fire is going and hot coals being on the fabricated air induction. Induction  would be cool, hot  then warm. Will the draw stall out with the temp changes.  Is there any law of physics that says no it will not draw. I want to stop using as much of inside air as possible. It has two large blowers on it. I will design a flapper to control the air flow if needed. Has anyone done this or has knowledge on heatilators and fireplaces on air flow. The house is tight and has a central heat.

Works good … make sure the plate on floor tilts back to fire wall so a blast of outside air doesn't blow ashes into the room .
