In Islam, they wait till he's a boy, then make it a big celebration, with gifts and a ride around town dressed up like Prince for the Day.

I'm sure. My parents weren't especially religious at all. But all 3 of us boys had it done. I suspect more of a cultural thing for them. Then there is also this thing where we cut holes in little girls ears. We do many things to our kids that might seem barbaric to others. I hesitate to bring up the subject again of parents who won't get their kids vaccinated.
 As to the Islamic tradition in question, I find it very barbaric. I could no way cut my child or grandchild. I find a person that can willfully injure a child psychologically twisted.

I fully admitted my hypocrisy on that one, although I was in favor of having my boy's pencils sharpened, I was adamantly against having the girl's ears pierced until they were old enough to know what it was and ask to have it done.

In exchange for waiting, the agreement we had was that if or when the girls decided they wanted their ears pierced, I would be the one to take them.

I took both of them when they were old enough to know and ask, and both of them eventually let their piercings close back up.  *Shrug*

On the original topic, causing physical harm to one's self to presumably please one's deity is not a monopoly held by Islam among world religions...
