An interesting informative video on the right to repair and who owns the vehicles data. Now the MFG's are going wireless and are making people pay for the diagnostic information.

I see this getting covered by the same act that covers the motor oil - everybody can access the car's diagnostic information.

Now that I thought about it - OBDII is a mandatory standard that all passenger cars (at least) have to have - several states require it to be read for state emissions testing (I know NC does). So , as long as that is mandatory - OBD2 checking should be possible.

Perhaps additional diagnostics beyond OBD2 is what the article is talking about....

And if you want to get down to brass tacks - while the manufacturers have the copyright to their SOFTWARE on the car - the OWNER of the car should be the owner of its data.
