I saw one of these yesterday.

It looked really good with the blacked out engine, pipes etc AND it didn't sound like a Harley.

I’m curious why it didn’t sound like a Harley? Just smoother or ?

I really wish Harley would really continue/go further with the thinking outside the box. Like maybe a water cooled V4. When I was bike shopping last year, I test rode a new Ultra, really wanted to like it because of the classic styling, but it was just so poor in the performance and fun side.

I have to admit this's a nice looking bike (once I repainted the fairing plain).

But can it perform with (and is it as reliable as) a water cooled flat 6 motor?

Nope!

Call your local Harley shop up and ask 'em what the maintenance schedule is mileage/time wise and how much those services cost...

And ask how many thousands more do I have to spend to make it keep up with a 20 year old Valkyrie.

I agree.  Almost looks as good as a Super Valk.

they had a great engine designed by porsche called The V-Rod. sounded great with pipes, but they put a crap frame around it and couldn't figure out why it didn't sell.

Buell had developed same great engines also, and they canned Buell also.

Harley is coming out with that same type of engine between 2020 and 2022 in I believe a 950 and 1250 design.  I think their problem will be that the Japanese and Italians do these bikes better and far less expensive and the younger buyers they are seeking do not get up in the morning and pledge allegiance to everything Harley.   I do wish them well we need them around.

I have seen a few of those 2018 Harley matt blue street glides, ( one was on a ride event I organize to raise money for Darke County, Oh every year).  They are pretty IMO.  If they do not sound like a normal Harley it is probably because of it being a floor bike with no stage upgrades.  The die hards call them soulless.  At least the M8 has settled down the total bike shake at idle.

The floorboards on my 14 cross country are 18 inches tip to tip.  I can ride with my feet under me ( and stand up when going over RR tracks and large bumps ) and with just toe clips on the tubular
crash bars I can extend out to total knee lock and my legs are kept close and not opened up wide.   For me with nerve pain in lower back it is ridiculously comfortable.   I do hope the new Indians with the Power Plus, 120 hp, water cooled  engine in the next few years are more stretched and not as cramped as Harelys and current Indians are for taller riders.  Some dealers say the new fixed fairing Indian with this engine coming out in the next few months will have more room.  I hope so.

Beardo mentioned a water cooled V4.  Gosh, wouldn't that be great.  I think the Japanese lost their way and should have stayed with a least some form of the watercooled 4s in a bagger, cruiser, design.   The 2018 Yamaha Transcontinental Venture and Eluder where anticipated with one, instead they got the air cooled, heat monster, 113 at 950 pounds that limits at 4500 rpms. It is a torque monster though.  It does get really good reviews and is smooth with weight down low and hi tech,  45 + mpg, and eats up the slab, however the Yamaha faithful are not buying it and darn few others also.  Such a shame.
