I used 191 to stay out of town while going back and forth to the
parkway last time Inzane was in Asheville. This route is probably
tolerable...

Hey, I just read this on the wlos (the local station) web page:

The bridge over I-26 on the Blue Ridge Parkway will have to be replaced.
Workers will build the new bridge next to the existing structure to avoid any
closures to the parkway
. Clearing of vegetation is expected to begin late in
2019 in the Spring of 2020. Work is expected to start in the fall of 2020.
The bridge is expected to be built in a similar style to the Linn Cove Viaduct
in large concrete box segments.

Carolyn just read somewhere that a BRP section near Roanoke is "closed
indefinitely", there's a 10 mile detour that uses 460...

Yeah saw that on FB as well. A friend of mine rode it a few weeks ago and claimed it was busted up pretty good in several sections. Damn shame they don't take care of that road better its one one the best summer rides we have because its so much cooler across it.

A bit unrelated maybe. We used to drive the parkway back north every spring, but, all the detours which seemed to increase over the years made us change our minds about taking it anymore. It doesn't appear that the repairs are being very quickly. It has been a couple years since I've checked, maybe some repairs have been made. Its too bad because we did enjoy it while it lasted.

The small bridges on the northern section wil bump you off your seat as you cross each end of them.

I would image that soon it will become a toll road like Skyline...We planned to take it home this past weekend, but caught wind it was closed...so we stayed on 340 north.

It's closed from MM 106 (US460) to MM 112 (SR24).

The detour is easy and there are a couple of options available.

The shortest option from the north is US460 to SR24 (Gus Nicks Blvd).

Coming from the south if you take SR24 towards Vinton and just stay on that rd it will run into US460.

A right onto US460 will take you back to the BRP.

A bit of an inconvenience but if you're traveling the BRP, Roanoke is a good place to stop for food or fuel anyway.

It's also your best option (in the area) for a place to spend the night if you are so inclined.

The BRP won't become like the Skyline Drive.

The Skyline Drive is in the Shenandoah NP and only has 4 access points.

The BRP has hundreds of access points, it would never be cost effective to try and control that.
