Hi folks, I haven't been on in a very long time now. Nor have I ridden. I'm going to sell my bike soon privately, but I'm at a loss how to do that. I don't want to let just anyone jump on it and zoom off. But then, I wouldn't buy a bike without a test ride. Some say haggle beforehand, and have the potential buyer give you the cash before the ride. Well, I would never do that if I were buying. So what's the best way to do this?
Thanks.

I would settle on a price and get cash in hand first before a test ride. If they wreck it the deal is sealed and if they don't wan't it no harm they get their cash back. But you are covered if they wreck it or steal it. I wouldn't be offended if asked to put up before a test ride or wouldn't feel bad for not buying it if I didn't want it.

I’ve bought and sold several bikes over last 5 years. Have bought on eBay but have not sold on eBay. I’ve always test drove a bike before buying without a deposit. I’ve always given a test drive. Have had long discussions with buyers. If I do not get a good take on them I call it off. Maybe I’ve been lucky but had no issues. Dan

These days cash in hand-total ask for the bike-then the test ride providing the test rider has the proper license. Check your liability with your insurance BEFORE someone other than you throws a leg over. I used to be a trusting soul. Then I got older. RIDE SAFE.

I sold a standard a couple years ago and had the guy leave his girlfriend with me until he came back. I know I was gambling he wouldn't run off on her but he came back and bought the bike. I decided how low I would be willing to go and got a couple hundred better than that so everyone likes to feel they got a deal.

I wouldn't require a cash deposit but, I would require an ID and maybe driver's license and some credit card (left with me while they ride). At least that way I could tell the police who to look for. But, no tire kicking free riders either. I want to see some cash before they ride my bike. IOWs, I need to be convinced they are serious buyers.

I have had good luck with craigslist. I get a feel for them over the phone and usually somewhat local people who are usually a trusting individual. If I think shady, I have followed them on test ride as well before but no require cash in hand.
seriously, unless you make the potential buyer state cash in hand say 3 grand is mine if you wreck/crash my bike signing a form of which they will never do, I doubt anyone I know would be willing to give you a set amount of money for a test ride. That is what you risk as a seller and you better have good insurance that covers it as well someone else test riding your cycle since title is in YOUR name NOT potential buyer and YOU are responsible for any accidents since YOU allowed him/her to test ride your cycle.
Is a risk but is a risk one must take IMO.
As far as advertising it, take nice pics (more than just 1-2 pics posted) of cleaned up cycle and good description and honest fair price for all not too high though you want calls to roll in. I keep seeing a very nice aftermaket paint job honda valkyrie I/S locally last year for 8K but for most a special paint job does not add well over 1K in value to most cycles like ours in terms of resale.
Color or paint does not make any cycle run better is more about taking care of it mechanically to most and in pretty good shape for a 20 year old bike..
