I bought a very neglected 99 IS that I'm nursing back to health, Front brakes were locked up and the rear pads had no friction material left on them (none what-so-ever).  I rebuilt the calipers, but was wondering about the sheet metal (SS) pieces that clip onto the pads.  This bike didn't have them, and neither do the OEM pads I have on hand.  I did have a set of 5 (need six) left over on a set of old pads.

Now, I don't see them offered on the OEM microfiche, so I was wondering, are they even needed?  And where did I get the ones I had laying around, if they don't come with the OEM Pads?

BTW, the bike is slowly coming together.  I bought it for my oldest son to ride when it is finished.

Update:  I may have answered my own question, in looking at the rear pads, I can see the sheet metal parts, maybe they are only used on the rear?

I got this on the front, and the metal shims on the back...

I kind of remember that Hondaline pads (in the red blister pack) are different than
the ones you get if you order off the parts fiche page (they come in a little plastic bag
with 06435-MZ0-006 stamped on them). But it has been a long time since I got
the Hondaline ones, back when HDL had a Valkyrie specific web page...

Might be an anti-squeal material. I thought the stainless steel on the rear pads were for anti-squeal.

I think so too... I put new pads on front and rear recently, I came down the gravel road to my house
kind of swiftly on return from my last ride, and now my rear brakes (the ones with the anti-squeal
shim  Smiley ) are squealing. I guess I'll have to try to look to see if I caught a piece of gravel in there or
something...

Well, I'm sure nobody else on here has a collection of used crap (parts), that you hang on to for God only knows what reason, always in the way until the one time you need it.  Well that happened last week as I was rebuilding all three calipers, I couldn't find those old brake pads with the SS sheet metal thingies.  Well last night as I was moving some other useless piece of crap out of the way I found 6 old brake pads and 3 have the SS thingies on them, so now I have enough to go all around.  Thanks for the replies.
