I know that I've been absent from the board for a long time but...well, it's been a hell of a year. A year ago, a really close friend of mine, who was like a little brother to me, passed away at age 29. I was supposed to officiate at his wedding but ended up giving his eulogy instead. Then, a few months later, I had a cancer scare. It turned out to be nothing but those few days waiting for test results really sucked. About a month later, my marriage of 15 years ended.
Fast forward to June 30th. After a few friends and I went to the beach for the day, I was dropping them each off. The last person I had to drop off was my closest friend. She and I have worked together for a number of years and developed a really close friendship with a lot of trust. As we were driving to her house, she told me that she was thinking of dating again (after almost two years). She asked me what I thought. I was surprised to find myself pulling the truck over and telling her that I thought that was a great idea, just as long as she was dating me.
She was equally shocked and told me that while she cared for me, she just didn't see me "that way". When we got to her house, we ended up talking for 14 straight hours. She is now officially my girlfriend and we have been together for 4 months. I have never been so happy.
She knows about my motorcycle addiction of course. It's hard to miss, since I ride the KLR 650 to work every day (45MPG!) and am usually in the wind on the Mothership on the weekends. She said that she thought she might like to go for a ride sometime. I took her to my favorite motorcycle shop and we got her all the gear. Last weekend was our first ride together. She is a great passenger and really enjoyed the ride. I mentioned that I would be going to InZant this year in NC and she immediately suggested that we start taking progressively longer rides to "build up her bike muscles" because she's planning to come along!
One thing that I've learned throughout all of this is that life is too short not to be happy. I've let a lot of things (and people) go in pursuit of that happiness. While I am still a Liberal at heart, I really don't give a running F#%K through a rolling doughnut about politics or political discussions at all anymore. You're a Republican who loves Trump? You're a Democrat who hates Trump? You can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trump is the second coming? You have irrefutable evidence that Trump is Satan incarnate? You hate conservatives? You can't stand Liberals? Cool, let's go for a ride or grab a beer and talk about something else. Life is just too short to let all of that nonsense into my head.
So, it was a rough year but it turned out pretty well. Things have a way of working out. See you all at InZane.
Ride safe,
Alien

I did a similar path. It's been 17 years in this new marriage. I do not think I could be happier.
LETS RIDE

I know what you mean when you say the year has been tough. January had gall bladder removal surgery, two months later biopsied to find prostate cancer, two months later lost my wife to a combination of parkinsons & cancer, two months later lost my home to her kids from a former marriage, and two months after that I moved to be near my daughter in Wisconsin. Being near family for the first time in decades is working out great & I'm halfway through treatment for the cancer. Chilly...yes, lonely...yes, but making new friends nearly every day and can now live my own life. It's not what I really wanted, but I'm happy with the results thus far. I also plan to be at Inzane, will be the first long trip on the bike in years and really looking forward to it.

Be happy to share a beer with your Liberal butt!! BTW - conservative beer has a better head on it.

Man, it has been a rough year for you ! I'm sorry about the bad stuff. I'm glad you landed on your feet and are doing well. I hope to make it to Asheville also. Hope to see you there.
Do you still have that old car you and your Dad were rebuilding ?

I love a happy ending For You and for John. Life can certainly hurl problems our way ! But as my Mom used to say "God will always provide" usually said in times of trouble. And I have found Her to be correct in Her and my families lives. And from my personal best example of a loving Father. My Southern Baptist Deacon Dad usually chimed in with the all the faith in the world. The verse behind the saying. Luke 12:24 King James Version " Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?" They were simple hard working folk who knew thru providence what was real.

One thing that I've learned throughout all of this is that life is too short not to be happy. Ya got that right! And the very next thing that goes along with that is understanding that happy...is a choice! Looking forward to seeing both of you at Inzane!
