Woke up this morning to the news report 9F  - my remote read thermometer on the front porch reads 12F.. Earliest I ever remember seeing single digits in my life (and I spent one winter in Boston ('86-'87)...)

And another thought on that . Our local morning news pointed out that both Kansas and Missouri have idle limit laws -  5 minutes for Kansas, 10 minutes for Missouri - so I would suggest you do some checking for your locality.

We're not going to get that cold here in the Old Dominion, but projected low 20s was enough to get me to shut off my three outdoor hose bibs (earliest in 27 years).  Who can afford plumbers?

Time to check my furnace filter too.

While you folks to the east are enjoying the cool weather, I went for a 3 hour ride yesterday afternoon in the 60 degree weather.   It was great.

Unfortunately it will all come to a bad end this weekend with rain and maybe snow.   tickedoff

I'll be heading off to work shortly. Better check the temps. Sunny and 83 F. Oh well, it has been cool the last couple days. Riding in Florida is good and bad. Good is you can ride all year long. Bad is not many roads worth riding. Most of our hills and curves are out on the I'state ramps.

Didn’t know what a hose bib was...had to google it. Must be a southern term  Grin

Last year I had a couple of my underground sprinkler valves on the side of my house split. I had blown out the lines and left them in the wide open position. A buddy told me a ball valve can trap some water in the valve even if left open. He said to leave them at a 45 degree/half open position. Been living here for 45 years and had never heard/knew that.

Not in common use here, but architectural / building mechanical designers, plumbers, and anyone else who reads blueprints will know and use the term.  I've known it since my high school drafting class.

Why is it called a hose bib?
They are all different names for the same thing. The building codes prefer hose bibb, which is considered as one type of water outlet. ... It is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a faucet placed at about sill height on the outside of a building and usually threaded for attaching a hose—called also hose rooster.”

a whopping 3 degrees here, so balmy.  I think I caught the tail end of the weather the other day and said black river falls wi about 2+ hours or so north of me was listed as the coldest temp in the US at that one moment, but has to be wrong others had it colder right in the NEGATIVE digits for low temps?
Record low temps all around for sure.

Reminder to all to check the vehicle tires for correct tire pressure.  My truck tires were around 38 psi when last checked a few weeks ago, now down to 34 psi thinking there must be a leak?    Tires must not like the cold as well loosing so much pressure in a week or so of bitter cold temps.  No gloves on and that last valve stem cap with numb fingers getting frost bit tingly for the 5 tops minutes out there was not a good feeling.   tickedoff

and what is it with all this snowfall even in October with 4 snowfalls already each time about 3 inches and expecting another 2 inches starting later tomorrow afternoon making it the 5th snowfall already just mid November is all and already will be near 15 inches total   tickedoff   Shoot,  I have not even gotten the snow shovels down from my garage rafters yet with 2 ATVs and cycles in the way still hoping for a warm up into the 40's still right???   Angry      In more recent winters, I doubt we hardly got 5 or 6 snowfalls all winter long and winter just started.   Cry

I have the normal turn the wheel valve outside, also they are below the sinks

But the whole house has one of those where you turn a lever 90 degrees (damn if I can remember what its called), as does the whole house water filter (actually 3 there) and I also put one on the inside wall going outside for the hose valve,

I close the one on the inside of the wall and leave the outside one open.  Have never had the outside one split and it does sometimes get below zero here in Ossining NY

Thanks for the reminder it is well below freezing now

yeah,, leave a hose hooked up to an outside faucet when it freezes to single digits and see what happens. I had mine unhooked several years ago when I knew the temp was going to drop and one of my kids hooked it back up and it froze and split the pipe in the wall and flooded the basement causing 15k in damage. Frost free faucets only work when you don't have a hose on them. I knew that,my kids didn't

Many in Canada  think of the Sunshine State as being perpetually in Summer mode, while many south of the border  think of Canada as being perpetually in Winter mode at  this time of year. 11 -13 C (50-55 F) here in SW BC this week...still hangin' on to riding season. Smiley
