I worked on the M61 on F-111's.  It uses a big drum to store the ammo w/o links, in a spiralling mechanism. The drum is quite large and of course would never fit in a Prius.  It looks a lot like the same assembly used on the bigger 30mm cannon of the A-10.  Rounds are always under positive control and the brass is returned to the drum after firing.  Not just discarded and with links as in this video.  It's also all-electric in the F-111, not hydraulic as they say here.  But I didn't work on the F-16 which they say it came from.

Good luck mounting an A10 Warthog 30mm cannon in a Prius.

And finding ammo would be difficult and expensive too.

Yup, the business end of the Warthog is rather intimidating...

Wow, 6600 rounds per second at $27 a round is $178200 a minute. Expensive fun!

I needed that prius yesterday when a jerkoff tailgating me zoomed over in right lane with 2 cars just a smidge ahead of me in other lane, cut me off having to go into oncoming traffic lane to avoid clipping my front end,  then pass me and 4 cars ahead of me in 2 different lanes doing 90 mph in a 55 speed zone.

I would have unloaded that big gun on his car instead of me just blarring my horn for 10 seconds and shining my bright lights on him in the dark while he cut me off.  Those older ford cars must have power to do 90 mph much less pass 4 cars in less than 200 yards uphill no less.

ONLY big issue  mounting that big gun on a prius is if fired, the prius would go backwards while driving forwards since the prius has NO POWER.  I had a rental ONCE gave it back did not even make it out of the parking lot in the cold winter the front end bumper was frozen solid to the snowbank it was parked in and did not have enough power to break loose from the ice on the bumper and am NOT kidding.  I went back and got a corolla with a 1.8L engine vs. 1.5L engine in the prius.   2funny

The M61 was rated at 6000rpm when I worked on them.  Those blue rounds in the video are practice rounds, FMJ if you will.  Combat rounds are mostly explosive.  Electric primed, not impact primers.  Had to be careful with static electricity especially in the desert.  Was stationed in Las Vegas and again in Tucson.  We had a reputation of being crazy with the SP squadron.  Would pound on the backs of the ammo when they crowded us looking for security violations to report - they'd see that and back off.  Did similar "crazy" stuff in the bomb dumps with bomb fuses which have the power of hand grenades.

Just figure that's 100 rounds PER SECOND. LOTS of firepower.  IIRC the minigun was a bit more, I'm recalling 7200rpm.  Don't know on the A-10 cannon.  BTW the A-10's first assignment base was Davis Monthan in fall 75 where I separated in 3/75.  I likely would have been assigned to work them as we were the only MMS squadron there.  But like I told my TSgt - I would sell pencils on street corners dressed in rags before I'd re-up, thx to the AF's stellar treatment on my first hitch.  They had just given me orders to be TDY'd again then separate overseas with no job lined up, a useless skill set and a pregnant wife and one child already - with new guys in the squadron never been shipped out same ASFC as me when I had done SEA tours twice already.  I told the LtCol commander, I'll desert before I'll go in this circumstance.  He agreed; could have nailed me for insubordination I suppose.  I actually had a job offer to be studio manager of the Tucson Chromalloy Photo Industries studio; that would have been lost.  I had an AA in photography by then and a large Nikon system.  I got the job.

The A-10 suffers a similar effect.  Recoil of the gun slows the plane down.

I can see that a little on a big plane, can you imagine what it would do to a small prius?   Might give the people inside the prius whiplash....   2funny
