I don't like reinventing the wheel, so I thought I'd ask here first. I'm interested in a rack that replaces the rear seat by bolting onto the OEM mounting spots. I almost never carry a passenger so would like a flat(ish) rack upon which to lash a large bag when traveling solo or a 4.3 gallon fuel cell when I'm pulling my trailer. I'm not interested in a "solo" rack that sits on the fender. If I get no response on this query, I'll get started on making one.
Thanks.

Excellent question. I rarely ride with a passenger on my other bike and have thought of turning the bike into a coupe. The truck would serve as a backrest. I don't think swinging my leg over the seat would be that much of an inconvenience for trade off.

Besides the hard to find curvy one by Show Chrome for Valk it seems to me there was a post about a year ago here by a guy who made a still available one (I think) work with some modification.  Anyone good at searching?

Seems to me it looked like a Yamaha OE solo rack, but I could be wrong.

I'm specifically NOT looking for this type. Something like a standard luggage rack, wide, flat, with bars, solidly mounted to the passenger seat mounts.

I think the best flat ones with good tie downs is Custom World International out of Quebec Canada.

I put one of these on my wife's bike years ago (Yamaha), and it beats the crap out of the little curvy Show Chrome one I have on my Valk.

My brain can't access the info but there's a company in TN? Name starts with a W? They make a very solid looking rack.

Detn8er has one.

and if you have an interstate you can just move the backrest and trunk forward like Matt did (he is the fellow that sells the 3 oring sets)  I think his handle is truckracer

Thanks for the suggestions. Mine is NOT an Interstate, the Wompus doesn't fit right behind the driver seat, the rest are the fender racks that I am not looking for. The rack I want may HAVE to be made. It will mount like the passenger seat, be as long as possible from just behind the driver's butt to the stock backrest bars. Wider than the passenger seat was.
Thank again.

They might make one for you. But $260, I don't know if I would go there.

Nope. That's more than I have in the fuel cell.

Made this and the seat crown awhile back from 3/8 stainless bar and cedar boards. Made the mounting brackets from pieces cut from 2 x 3 aluminum angle. Made the curves in the stainless bar by clamping a couple of 3 inch pipe pieces to a table and bending the bar by hand around them, and welding up the pieces with stainless rods using a stick welder. Mounted the boards to the stainless frame using the saddles from 3/8 cable clamps and stainless carriage bolts.

You and me both Jess, but don't give meany ideas, I'm figuring out how to cut and thread gas pipe.

I wonder if I would have better luck with the HF pipe threader than most??

I built a big double wide deck the full length of the side of my house (on the ground) soon after I bought it.  I used all number one yellow pine and then kept it stained with beautiful cedar transparent.  It had a 6 foot fountain (with predictable water damage) and a nice 4-girl Jacuzzi with sun shade.

Fast forward 25 years, and the fountain is gone (in pieces of concrete), the tub is unhooked forever (and free to a good home), and I've covered the few holes and soft spots with random plywood and two by four patches.  I don't use it anymore, so I'm not working on it anymore.

Sort of makes me want to come on up there and help you restore it all Jess, wonder if you can dig up any of those wrinkly old gals for the hot tub?

I've got 2 different size racks that will bolt on in place of the tour pack on an Interstate.  They came with an Interstate that I purchase in 2017 (I have never installed them myself). One is 17 by 24 and the smaller one is 12 by 12.  Both have plug/play brake lights too!

They are just a 'flat bed' type rack that is powder coated black.

I'm having troubles attaching pics... so if you're interested let me know and I'll try to get them to you.

Thanks Kraig

Idle thought.

Can you flip a rack so it faces forward? Dunno if it would clear the fender hump.

Thanks, but I don't have an Interstate nor the trunk rack.

Dang Valker I wish I was home. When  I bought a Std. from a guy years ago from Michigan, he included a custom rack he had made something like the wooden one shown but larger. He had made it out of thick aluminum. If I remember correctly it's in my garage. I may get home in Jan. and I would give it to you in lieu of a steak dinner that is still owed you. Are you still doing MSF courses in town? I'm currently working on a project in SE Texas that is finishing up and I may have a window of opportunity to head home to check on the house.

That sounds great. I look forward to hearing from you when you get back in the area. I have more than one Valkyrie and travel on all of them.

I had some help but made one that connects at the same spots as the seat. I made it out of 1/4 inch (I think) bar that I bent, Then a friend helped me weld the screen on and the brackets. Here is a pic of the back from my summer trip down Alien Highway NV. I will post another one later of it. If you want measurements, let me know. I made it almost as big as my saddlebags to the stuff does not lean on the bags.

yes that is a gas tank. Friend helped me with that 5 yrs ago. 4.8 gal and made out of aluminum.

That looks really perfect. I have a 4.3 gallon auxillary tank I want to use also.... More info and measurements would be appreciated.
