POD - 6 hour ride then camp

I want to do some long rides with camping. The only way to prepare is to test. I'm an Eagle Scout, was a U.S. Army Combat Engineer, so I've been outside some.

Step 1 - I haven't camped in years, so I have to find my pack... OH, there it is in the dirt behind my shop.

Dump it out... kill some spiders... pick what I need



A couple MRE's, solo tent, sleeping bag, ground pad (I'm 50 years old), Towel, Magnetic flashlight off the refrigerator (as good as any), lighter, a small towel, a pair of camp pants (scrubs), Raingear (I won't need it but I should carry it). I'll buy some water on the road.  If I can find my tiny folding camp chair out in the leaf pile I'll take it... otherwise I'll just take the seat off the bike to sit on. ... and a beanie... It's going to be In the 30’s tonight.

MRE's.....  now there's some fine dining.  

Nearly every time I ever travel, I need rain gear (which also subs for cold weather gear).

I'm done with camping for a long time. (I was also a boy scout and senior patrol leader)

Except maybe using this (not an RV, but somewhat better than a tent)  


I threw an old living room recliner in back (rather than the dump), which is a decent sleeper.

Enjoy the ride and camp. When you get home consider new gear. I've bike camped as much as 60 nights a year. From Key West to the Arctic circle. Newer gear will make the camping MUCH more fun.

The newest model of Big Agnes sleeping pads are great. I have both an insulated for under 50 temps and non insulated in the wide long size. A newish insulated bag works far better than anything 20 years old unless your old bag is goose down. I sleep right on the pad and use the bag only as a cover.

Also important is a good camp chair. I don't care if mine is large as it is comfortable. It's a big folding chair from Sam's club, not a toy with those tiny legs.

I never carrying cooking gear or much food, just a chocolate snack and sunflower seeds. Eat at the restaurants or pack a Subway to camp.

Post up how your trip went. I'm off tomorrow for Key West. We camped at Sigsbee and Big Cypress swamp the past 2 years but camping in a mobile home at Trumbo this week as it's crawling distance from Duval street and my riding buddy wants do a little Key West "crawling". (I don't drink more than a single shot a day!).

What is the absolute best fire starter?
Always available at a camp out.
Always dry.
Lights with one match every time.
Burns hot and long.







Any deep fried chip will do. They are basically oil bombs.

Lucky me. I found a camp chair in the woods when I was getting firewood.

The great thing about MRE’s is that they come with everything. Napkin salt spoon pepper dessert coffee sugar cream.  They also come with a water activated heater. But the one in this MRE didn’t work it’s a very old MRE at least 10 years old. So I had to warm it up the old fashioned way.





The flashlight is USB rechargeable. And I have a USB charging port on my Valk. No need to pack batteries.

Good advice. I did.  I did a round trip and then camped in the woods on my 10 acre homestead.  The chair I "found" is one I put in the woods 6 years ago when I was hunting.
