Outvoted ?

Its easy for that to happen when you in a state like NY.

Patrick,
Not knowing you personally or your political positions, I can only assume you qualify as one with a right to bitch based on your posting.   There are those who support social entitlement programs and bigger (Big Brother) government that should be happy to pay their taxes.   Really depends on who was sent to serve and who "they" voted for.    A good example would be any politician that promises healthcare for all but, can only fund such a "entitlement" by raising taxes on those who are already carrying a heavy burden while others pay much less than their share.   Not throwing stones at anyone, we get the government we deserve, I'm told.

And school taxes are a heck of a lot more than property tax by about 3x.

half of mine are indeed school tax.

why do I have to pay a tax for children when I do not have children and do not use the school system?

I have to very respectfully ask you all, please do not move to  Tennessee and screw everything up 2funny  When I left my home in California at age 17, I only looked back once...... Of course, I was already a Tennessee boy by birth and always said I would move back home someday.  After 10 schools in 12 years, I had the chance to escape, and I did.  Raised my family here, kids stayed in same school district their whole life. I passed on a few very good jobs so we could stay here. Bottom line, I am thankful it all worked out. Now, Lord willing, I will die here and be buried here in my home town.
I really do feel for all ya'll stuck in your  high tax, high cost of living situations. But I understand, it's your home town. If you are sick and tired of it, my suggestion is to sell out and move to Texas or Oklahoma, or Arkansas, or Mississippi, or Alabama, and learn to live like human beings again 2funny 2funny  OK flame suit on Cheesy

Far as that school tax thingy my youngest will be 25 may of 2020. My annual tax bill while NOT obscene at all do in FACT include school tax. AND as others have stated I get no use from said tax nor does anyone in my family as they are All Full Grown Adults. But I are Still paying that tax!  Lips Sealed RIDE SAFE.

If you really want to see how school taxes affect your local economy, ask your county to print out a pie chart showing where tax money goes.  If it looks anything like our county, 73% of the pie is school money.  Our penny is worth about $4,300.00 this year.   AND, schools always want more money. Yes.  The return on education spending is huge.  Our local high school has programs in Baking, Cosmetology, Carpentry, Masonry, Mechanics, and more.  Those young people graduate job-ready.  The cost of the programs is returned to our local economy many times over.
Yes, the, "good".  When it works like that, we are fortunate, when school rolls are diminishing, it is not so good.   Seems we all have our woes, and fortunately our bright sides as well.  God bless our young and help us to raise them right so that , that huge investment pays off for their future.  cooldude

This is a huge problem in this area. The populace here is dominated by retirees. They have the attitude that they paid for their kids already, why should they have to pay for someone else’s ? Imagine if education taxes were only paid by child bearing people.

I wouldn't mind paying school taxes so much if the money spent was actually effective.  Detroit schools spend a fortune per student and are always asking for more, yet they are less and less effective.  Schools today (some, not all) are more effective at indoctrinating, teaching what to think rather than how to think.

Not all school districts are the same, but the Detroit school board should be ashamed.

very rare in most areas of the country. people graduate and move to other towns, college, etc., and work so nothing is returned to the town they grew up in.

OK Gig and Jess,  I could probably handle you two.  Grin
Actually, I thought about this a little more, and yep, schools are the big sucking sound heard in the budget meetings, as is the Sheriffs departments. Lotsa money to run both.  Of course, sales tax is a large portion of school monies as well, at least here in Tennessee. 25% of it.

sheriffs depts, check the huge salaries they are giving each other esp if police unions are involved.

The only sheriffs in NJ are in the court system. They are not town officers.
NJ police are the highest paid in the country
 https://www.nj.com/news/2010/09/nj_police_salaries_rank_highes.html

sergeants and supervisors are in the 125-160k/yr range. many chiefs are making 200+k/yr
https://www.nj.com/news/2016/03/who_are_the_highest-paid_police_chiefs_in_nj.html#0

I met a local officer who is from down south and moved to NJ for the high salary and benefits. said once he retires in 20 he is moving back down south.  There is a supervisor officer living in a 600+k house in another town and county that happens to have lower property taxes than the one he works for.  and just about all NJ towns now give police officers their own police cruiser to commute back and forth from home and work. gas and maintenance all paid for. Found one cop living 40 minute drive away in a lower cost county while I was out riding one day.
There is a retired lieutenant at the diner I go to, friend/neighbor of mine, is related to him through marriage, told me his retirement check is over 5k/month and he was told he never took his gun out all the yrs he was cop.
so all big reason for highest property taxes in the country in NJ.

and don't believe the police union lie of how dangerous a job.  the Bureau of Labor Statistics has never listed police in the top 10 of most dangerous jobs.

Next school referendum they are asking for that next 1-2  million dollar improvement, vote NO and tell everyone you know in your town to vote NO as well so it does not pass.    Some things like roofing and basic essentials are needed like heat/flooring, etc., but a lot of times the schools spend money in areas NOT needed being out of the ordinary NON essential things and IMO extravagant living.

Yup, I agree.
Our quality of education is dropping as far as I'm concerned and our drop-out rate is increasing. But, our sports fields/facilities are top notch.

Hey now, us older folks resent that remark,  even older than me say in their 60s can still be child bearing people, at least if we are lucky enough to score with a female under age 40ish still......     Grin

NOt so sure I want to change diapers all over again though but the joys of attempting the child bearing part sounds good to me still!     Tongue

Wow I'm surprised, that's way better than I had in Kansas. I have always enjoyed riding in Indiana.

But, 1500 sqft with 2 car garage 3 miles from Pensacola Bay boat ramp and 21 miles to the Gulf of Mexico boat ramp, no state income tax $108 heat bill last month at $1047 house taxes per year I like it here. OK I only have a small regular size city lot as I decided mowing grass was not my funnest retirement "hobby" but I do have room for the 19' boat under a canopy next to the house.

My taxes will go down more when I hit old age at 65...

Did I mention my ride to Key West last week? We'll be camping in January and February somewhere come on down.

My property taxes doubled this year just moving 200 miles across the state of Kentucky. I had been paying $1200.00 a year for my home and 20 acres which I had owned for 30+ years. Even though I sold it for an amount equal to the house and 2 acres I have now, my taxes were $2700.00 this year. And as already discussed, the lions portion of that is school taxes. Maybe one day, if I live long enough, Tennessee or Florida will be calling for me. My two grandsons have me pretty well rooted where I am for now.

location location location is key.  like said my exact same house 32 miles north in Madison WI much larger yuppier big city my taxes on house would be 2 grand more am sure of it since mother in law lives there and her house similar size but 1 car garage vs. 2 cars I have is insane.

I went down to village in may one horse town and compared assessments of all my neighbors and guess cannot complain on the lot value since all same sized lots are within 100's of each other same 43K or so which is still 8K more than the same sized lots asking thru century 21 up  my hill where fancier homes are being built.  Both my neighbors have bigger empty lots besides their house and they are both paying 33K for the empty lots so I guess our lots with our homes are all 'improved' lots whatever that means basically nothing as far as I am concerned dirt is dirt whether house on it or not.   My neighbor I see must have complained during the open assessment hearing in November though since I see his home value got penciled in as 8K less than village assessed it at but then again,  his insurance company who his daddy willed to him is right across from the village office downtown and he was on village board as well as thinks big shot in this town of 1200.  Technically, he finished off his entire basement last few years and in reality his home value should be more than the original assessment not 8K less.  I am not complaining though since my smaller home is the least out of all my richer, bigger home neighbors and even some about same size and older than mine.  I guess since all lots in this town are the same, unless we all go down together to get fairly assessed or go to village board arguing insance 16% rate increase not right what is the village board doing or needing to justify this huge rate increase,  nothing will be done.

Another thing I learned is met our new ran unopposed village President and she was in a complete panic mode running around and even said to me 'I do not know anything,  I am just the village President' and said she is leaving in 10 minutes shutting office doors down early like 2:30 p.m. vs. 430 p.m. since has an appt. to be at soon and no one else there like village clerk to keep the lights on.  So glad I did not apply for the village clerk position since knowing what she does not know being the village President I would have to run the show for her.
