Back by popular demand, the Yooper Event 2020 is returning to Newberry, MI. July 31 & Aug 1.
Rooms won't last long, you can book now:

Park a Way Motel
 Newberry, MI
906 293-8342

Say "GiG Up North" July 31 / Aug 1.
Rooms range from $62 to $84 depending.

We have also reserved the "Evening Star" Motel as well, on the same property,  same PH #, same owner as Park a Way.

When these rooms fill up, there are other Motels in this small town, so come join us.
Looking forward to Summer riding in Michigan! Woo-Hoo!!!  Cool

Gig,

I wouldn't blame you if you didn't take this too seriously... I can hardly believe it myself! Hope you're sitting down... even more, I hope you have no objection... Anyway, I've taken the unprecedented step of actually making a reservation! Yeah... go figure, right!

It went way smoother than I'd dreaded. Geeez, who knew it could be so easy? So, while there is no guarantee I'll actually show up, there is that possibility... Of course, if any of my Canadian buds will be there, the odds of me making an appearance increase! I say all of this in the sincere hope it doesn't discourage anyone or cause anybody to decide to skip this shindig on my account... I reckon we'll just have to play the hand and see what happens, huh...?

Bruce,
We hope you make it, last year was a really good time.
Maybe you can bring your LA fishing buddy with you.
Only 6 months away, plenty of time to not plan for this one....

diana and i are in looking for ride routes once we get there not going to white fish point this year. trying find some hard surface roads in the north west but not many.  think i have found some nice ones but still looking.  they will be pretty much a all day ride
at least with a all day ride we will not be carried away by the state bird

Expecting to get up there this year, booked at the campground just North of Newberry.

Steve - Here is kinda what I am planning on, about 7 hours with photo ops and a meal in Grand Marias with 77 the only road you double back on.

That would be a pretty good route, to add a little more back road (paved) on US2 instead of going north on M-117 go north at Blaney Park on M-77 to Germfask and turn east onto Ten Curves rd, follow that to the end, then Left on Manistique lakes rd, and that will dump you out on M-28 just west of Newberry

Fudgie- the timing is perfect! Bring Juice Up North and go to Sturgis from there, it’s the best route, trust me, you’ll be glad you did  cooldude

That is a good idea Luftkoph.  There are actually more than 10 curves, but I think the Yooper numbering systems ends at 10 Grin    sorry, I could not resist.   I was going to suggest taking H33 north off the 2 and going by South Manistique Lake and then Manistique Lake which come together in Curtis.  It is a curvy road also especially going north out of Curtis with nice scenery.   I actually met my wife in July of 1995 in Curtis at the Tally Ho.  Her family owns a lake cabin up in Helmer Bay and I was with some long time buddies at are annual trek to play in the July softball tournament in Curtis. We got married on Manistique lake in July of 98 and it was catered by Chamberlains Ole Forest Inn which has excellent food.   Made more trips up their for weeklong vacations than I can count and absolutely love the UP.  Great people up their also. I so hope it works out that I can make this trip, so much stuff up in the air right now.

Lots of fine ride ideas from rainman, Dagwood, luftkoph, thanks guys, great job! I will need to scout that 10 Curves Road at Gemfask  cooldude
There are plenty of beautiful destinations within a day's ride from Newberry, I encourage everyone to explore the area. The Falls, Whitefish Point, Munising via H-58 are real good places to ponder.
There is not one single organized ride, it would be too cumbersome for us all to ride together, so several smaller groups is the intention. Probably have 5-6 Ride Captains this year.

We spent several extra days in the UP and Northern Michigan last year and rode all over. Loved the German beer at the German restaurant in Copper Harbor. Town is small and hotels very expensive.  Real nice ride up and back on that Peninsula. We stayed 2 nights at the Super 8 in Houghton. Really nice place beside the river for around $100 a night. Walking distance to restaurants and bar. About 40 miles up to Copper Harbor.
Several nice waterfalls around the UP. Nice ride up to Whitefish point and Lake Superior. Had a good time up in Sault Ste Marie and took tour thru Soo Locks. Spent couple nights in Mackinaw City. Toured Mackinaw Island. Really enjoyed the town. Great brewery beside the Harley Store(don’t remember name). Over 50 beers on tap. Love their dark peanut butter flavor brew. Spent few days driving down Western side of Michigan along the lake thru the Tunnel of Trees. Some really nice small towns. Found the Northern half of Michigan to be awesome. I’m from Northern Indiana and never really liked Michigan since I’d never gone north of Detroit before leaving for the Navy in 1977. Looking forward to doing it again this year.

not sure why you do go to Grand Maria’s and Miners castle without riding along the lake. H58 connects those two points and is arguably the best ride in the UP.

H58 is an awesome stretch of road  cooldude

But not when you go East from Gran Marais like I did last year, trying to get to Whitefish Point the direct way - had the Valkyrie burried up to the axles in sugar-like sand. Almost made it, too!

Newberry to Gran Mairais? I started that way too, in 2018, decided quickly it can't be done 2-up on a Victory CCT.

Gran Marais East on H58 was not awful at first, started out paved, turned gravel (not bad), turned to hard pack (not bad), turned to dirt, sand, then DEEP SAND - like dunes, which it is. Bout kilt me getting that bike turned around to get out!

The guys on the properly set up light bikes seemed to really enjoy it though.

I took it all the way from 28 to H58 2 up on the valk. several areas if I did not keep up my speed I would have got stuck. Wife would not talk to me for awhile.
