Mike Pence says US does not have enough tests to meet anticipated demand.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8078787/Experts-say-coronavirus-epidemic-moving-QUICKLY-accurate-death-illness-rate.html

Don't 'hang your hat' on current coronavirus numbers, US doctor warns: Experts say the epidemic is moving TOO QUICKLY to have an accurate death and illness rate.

The World Health Organisation says the global death rate from coronavirus is 3.4%, higher than the 2% that was previously reported.
Dr Jennifer Ashton, ABC News Chief Medical Correspondent, advised people not to panic.
She said the rate is subject to change constantly because researchers don't know the exact number of people who've fallen ill.
Dr Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health said the rate among older people is higher because they are more at risk due to pre-existing conditions.
Worldwide, more than 96,000 people have been infected and more than 3,300 people have died.

The WHO has been facing increased pressure from many countries to just call it a pandemic, already.  That would change funding and emphasis from containment to mitigation.  This article explains why they want to hold off as long as possible on using the "p" word.

The World Health Organization urged governments around the world to pull out "all the stops" in the fight against the increasingly pervasive and deadly outbreak of the new coronavirus.

"This is not a drill. This is not the time for giving up. This is not a time of for excuses. This is a time for pulling out all the stops," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Thursday.
"Countries have been planning for scenarios like this for decades," he said. "Now is the time to act on those plans."

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/03/us-america-has-fraction-medical-supplies-it-needs-to-combat-coronavirus/#close

“In a severe pandemic, we certainly could run out of ventilators, but a hospital could just as soon run out of respiratory therapists who normally operate these devices,” says Toner.

U.S. has only a fraction of the medical supplies it needs to combat coronavirus
The country could require seven billion respirators and face masks over the course of the outbreak.

I wish that fellows just posting a link would copy-paste what they think are the most important few sentences or paragraph in the article to their posts, so that we can read it before deciding to open it and read the whole article.  My reading comprehension is still pretty good, but my attention span is not as good as it used to be.

Not just in this thread, in any thread.

I second this - a brief description / some important point(s) or whatever the poster thinks makes this worth posting.

[/i][/color]

The link is the whole article Paul.  I'm talking about some words in addition to the link.

The idea is to put a couple sentences explaining why the link is worth opening and reading.  What is new or different about it (that makes it different than the other thousand stories out there on the subject).

Either a copy-paste from the article, or just your own description.

My last contribution of substance in this thread was an article that was talking about how long the virus could survive on some metal or plastic surface, not in a human (9 days).  I felt that was new.

I copy-pasted a couple sentences that was the essence of the link.

Especially in a long multipage thread with many, many links being posted.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-cancels-trip-cdc-coronavirus-fears/story?id=69433435

Article claims Trump cancelled scheduled trip to sign Coronavirus spending bill because he fears someone in CDC may be infected with the virus.  It appears that he opted to sign it in the Diplomatic Room of the White House instead.

"We may go -- they thought there was a problem with CDC with somebody who had the virus,” he told reporters, adding that the person in question has been tested and it is a negative test. “I may be going,” he added, but it wasn't clear when he might try to go to the CDC.

Update : Looks like he's going to the CDC after all.

RUSH: Hey, folks, we have official guidelines now from the World Health Organization about how to talk about the coronavirus. You ready? Are you ready for your orders? Here are the commands from the World Health Organization.

You are permitted to talk about people acquiring or contracting the coronavirus. You are forbidden from talking about people transmitting it. You are not to use terminology like infecting others or spreading the virus. You know why? Because it implies intentional transmission and assigns blame, and you can’t do that. So you cannot talk about people transmitting it, you can’t talk about people infecting others, and you cannot talk about the spreading of virus because that’s discriminatory, it’s mean, and it’s assigning blame.

You can talk about people getting it. You can talk about people acquiring it. You can talk about people contracting it, as though they’re buying it. But you can’t talk about people spreading it. And you can’t talk about people infecting other people because that implies that they’re doing it on purpose. And aside from the ChiComs, we don’t think anybody is doing it on purpose. And there you have your typical, worthless, useless bureaucrat involvement in trying to, what? Stop help the spread of – I’m sorry, can’t say that. Can’t talk about the spread. That implies it’s happening on purpose. That’s the big contribution today from the World Health Organization.

yah,  this virus must be getting real.  Just heard an ARNOLD classic powerlifting meet said ONLY parents can watch anyone else not allowed in which I find overkill.

I wonder what will happen in 2-3 weeks from now my age 19 now kid is doing a Chicago powerlifting event against adults now vs. high school last year and we plan on attending only 2 hours south or so.  Still do not get though why so much for registration being 110 bucks to lift 3 squat, 3 bench, 3 deadlift is all?  Someone is making a killing  Roll Eyes    Him and his bigger lifting buddy in another UW school system 1 year older are going down both pretty good in their respective weight class but going against adults who probably have taken steroids and lifted for 10+ years vs. just high school kids is a different story all together.    One kid though I think in the Nekoosa school district super heavyweight  age 17 or so I think only a sophomore is a BRUTE of a human being he placed as a freshman 1st place in the state of WI last year heavyweight division blowing away the competition something like near  800lb. deadlift and squat each and ONLY a freshman in high school then.  Nice kid talked to him in the hot tub last year as a freshman in the state of WI event in Appleton where my kid got 2nd place in 195lb. class did awesome predicted 5th.

There are varying degrees of personal fault in transmitting any disease.

From none, to gross negligence to intentional misconduct.

Talking about negligence and misconduct is good.

The CDC can keep their opinions on free speech to themselves.  They should put all their efforts into treating and studying and containing disease, not making recommendations about my speech.

I wonder, where would we normally get these supplies?  One of the basic problems with a global market place.  When will we hit the medicine shortage stage?

Let’s trust Italy’s numbers and assume that about 10% of cases are serious enough to require hospitalization. (Keep in mind that for many patients, hospitalization lasts for *weeks* — in other words, turnover will be *very* slow as beds fill with COVID19 patients).
By this estimate, by about May 8th, all open hospital beds in the US will be filled

A lady friend of mine has been on vacation in Rome since Feb 11. She flies back to the USA on Tuesday. She's staying in central Rome near the Parthenon. At the time of this post it's 8.30 on a Saturday night in central Rome. She has walked past 3 restaurants. All empty.

The piazza outside the Parthenon is normally busy Saturday evening with the passeggiata. it's like a ghost town.

Lady friends niece flew back from Italy after being in Rome for a week.

Rome to JFK via Dublin Ireland.

Upon arrival at JFK there were no questions asked of her and no screening of any kind whatsoever.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/health-wellness/coronavirus-expert-says-the-virus-will-burn-itself-out-in-about-6-months/679415

n a private conference call organized last week by CLSA, a brokerage firm based in Hong Kong, investment analysts had a chance to ask Nicholls, one of the world's foremost experts on the topic, questions about the novel coronavirus. In the days since the call took place, details of Nicholls' analysis have surfaced on social media and elsewhere online, including a transcript of the call.

Nicholls responded to emailed questions from AccuWeather on Wednesday and confirmed his participation in the discussion, but emphasized that his remarks were made in “a personal capacity” and meant to remain “private.” He said the call was recorded “without my knowledge or consent” and then leaked on social media. When asked by AccuWeather, Nicholls did not dispute any of quotes attributed to him in the leaked transcript. CLSA has not responded to AccuWeather's request for a comment on the conference call.

The transcript of the call showed Nicholls believes weather conditions will be a key factor in the demise of the novel coronavirus. Referencing the SARS outbreak from 2002 and 2003, Nicholls said he thinks similar weather factors will also shut down the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"Three things the virus does not like: 1. Sunlight, 2. Temperature, and 3. Humidity," Nicholls said in response to a question about when he thinks confirmed cases will peak.

However, Nicholls also said that he doesn't consider SARS or MERS, a Middle Eastern novel virus that spread in 2012, to be an accurate comparison for this year's outbreak. Rather, the novel coronavirus most closely relates to a severe case of the common cold.

n a private conference call organized last week by CLSA, a brokerage firm based in Hong Kong, investment analysts had a chance to ask Nicholls, one of the world's foremost experts on the topic, questions about the novel coronavirus.

Rather, the novel coronavirus most closely relates to a severe case of the common cold.

so for decades it has been said a vaccine cannot be developed for the common cold virus, yet the corono virus is in the same family as the common cold virus but just more contagious and slightly stronger than the common cold. yet Now they are spending millions to have a vaccine. Really? What is really going on?  why do all flues and now the corona come from and start in china?  what is really going on?  why are is the corona seem to be hitting the edlerly and already sick harder and not affecting children? what is really going on?

Really? What is really going on?

-Because "the common cold" is a conglomerate of many different and diverse viruses. Can't really do a vaccine for a generic set of symptoms; however COVID-19 is one specific virus, which a vaccine can be developed for.

why do all flues and now the corona come from and start in china?  what is really going on?

-Because China is a highly dense country, population wise, with marginal sanitation and many people cohabiting with animals that become prey, as well as the prevalence of so-called "wet markets" where many types of live prey animals are kept in close, unsanitary proximity. This combination makes for a veritable mixing pot of nasties to blend, species hop, morph and eventually make it to humans.

why are is the corona seem to be hitting the edlerly and already sick harder and not affecting children? what is really going on?

-This one should be obvious, but the elderly and already sick are, by those very differentiators, less likely to be healthy enough to fend off an illness. If your Valk is already running on only 4 cylinders and loses spark to one of the remaining cylinders it's a lot less likely to keep going until you can make it to a repair shop than a Valk that's been running on all 6 cylinders would be.

I am still hearing the CDC (watching Azar right now)  and WHO saying they are learning more about this virus every day, and it seems the more they learn the more they talk about the importance of "buying time".   Not particularly reassuring.

is late today.   Probably trying to figure out how to tactfully drop a bomb on us.

If interested in watching live, YouTube Global News WHO update live.

Tedros:  "The rule of the game is to never give up.  Let hope be the antidote to fear".

I did not hear any new declarations today regarding the P word.

Michael Ryan: "We are very close.  The word for us isn't an issue.  The issue is what will the reaction to that word be-- will we give up, or will we fight"?

Tedros went on to say that some who speak of just letting the virus sweep the globe to increase human immunity is a form of "moral decay". "It pains me to see countries want to move into mitigation because the virus kills senior citizens.  The death rate from this virus is high.  At the end of the day it's a human life.  Every individual life matters".

In a nutshell, The WHO is stressing blending strategies of controlling (containing as much as possible) the virus and mitigating the impacts...
