More eye opening comparisons of influenza versus coronavirus. https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/3/13/21176735/covid-19-coronavirus-worse-than-flu-comparison"Covid-19 is not the flu. It’s worse. It’s deadlier, more contagious, and more likely to severely disrupt our health care system". https://www.marketwatch.com/story/coronavirus-vs-the-flu-its-just-like-other-viruses-and-we-should-go-about-our-normal-business-right-wrong-heres-why-2020-03-09Influenza and COVID-19 come from different virus families. COVID-19, also called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2, is brand new. Influenza has likely been around for more than 2,000 years. Scientists say the “novel influenza A viruses” in humans lead to a pandemic approximately once every 40 years. But, again, flu vaccines exist. “The flu has been with us since the birth of modern medicine,” said Adalja. “There is population immunity to many strains of the flu,” said Adalja. “There are four other strains of the coronavirus, but the attack rate of this virus is relatively high as there is no immunity to it."To put that in perspective: In 2017–18, the worst flu season on record in the U.S. outside of a pandemic, approximately 80,000 Americans died. The four other coronavirus strains that already exist are responsible for around 25% of our common colds, Adalja added. “But it doesn’t seem like there is cross-immunity with this coronavirus as there are with the other coronaviruses.”
Now consider that many scientists are saying that COVID-19 is likely to become an endemic disease, meaning it may not go away but instead will become annual like the flu, picking up steam and seasonal mutations every year.

Everyone would do well to not buy into the mass panic that the MSM is trying to sell.
The same things that would protect you from getting a cold or the flu will also protect you from catching the Corona Virus.
It does appear to be more contagious than either a cold or the flu and it certainly has much more potential to be deadly than the common cold.
But, its mortality rate is the same or only slightly more than the flu.
Exposure to someone that has it isn't a 100% guarantee that you will catch it.
Catching it isn't a 100% certainty that you will die from it.
Personally, I'm not planning on taking a cruise anytime soon.
I'll probably refrain from attending any concerts or any other event where a large crowd would be gathered.
And I will try to be more aware of "sick" people and protect myself with handwashing or sanitizing.
But, other than that I plan on living my life as normal as possible.
I might feel more anxious if Ihad to ride the NYC subway everyday.

Quote: "But, its mortality rate is the same or only slightly more than the flu". Believe whatever you want believe, but this is not accurate. While they are still gathering data, the death rates for coronavirus are considerably higher than influenza especially for older individuals. As Tedros said today, recoveries do happen, but many are requiring up to six weeks of hospitalization before they are declared free of the virus and many of those do not recover from the related illness, "for months". It is said that in severe cases lung damage can be permanent. Also, many severe cases are experiencing organ failure and bacterial infections requiring additional treatment and antibiotics. This virus is nothing to be scoffed at. Hospitals will still face an influx of flu patients, and with the addition of COVID-19 patients it it's predicted many may be overwhelmed. The death rate from seasonal flu (influenza) is typically around 0.1% in the U.S.BTW, I am not alarmist nor am I "buying into MSM" panic". I do take heed of WHO and CDC data and analysis. All this said I wish everyone on both sides would take the politics out of it. Politicizing a virus makes no sense to me whatsoever.

https://apnews.com/e1fe7ed2e111436c68c9673bee1c0d4cSometimes we need to step back and try to learn what is factual. My lady friend is going to get on a flight tomorrow, Tuesday, because her pre booked taxidriver has permission to drive her to the airport. At this moment of me posting , 10.04 Tuesday night, Delta is still going to be be flying Delta Flight DL 0065 to Atlanta from Rome.

Posted a page or 2 back, just to add a little levity. "Three things the virus does not like: 1. Sunlight, 2. Temperature, and 3. Humidity,"
Nicholls said in response to a question about when he thinks confirmed cases will peak. WOW! We got it made here in Florida. We have all 3 in spades! Maybe that Global Warming thing will help.

This is your daily reminder that it took Barack Obama until October of 2009 to declare Swine Flu a National Health Emergency
It began in April of ‘09 but Obama waited until 20,000 people in the US had been hospitalized & 1,000+ had died
Where was the media hysteria then?

I cannot believe all the crazies in certain parts of the US heard people are lined up outside places like Costco to get the stockpile of essentials like bottled water and toilet paper among other things flying off the shelves.
This I do NOT get at all with some people. NOT like the power is going to go out or a tornado or earthquake destroyed your home needing those type of supplies stockpiled up.
that said, it is coming nationwide am sure just too many people traveling nowadays to ignore that it is coming close by to most of us. Just heard on the news that the 1st case in WI is up north around Eau Claire area. It will spread, just a matter of time. If heat kills it say above 80+ degrees or more, cannot wait for SUMMER to come. I do not travel much or go out much so will not hoard toilet paper, I think I can manage to not go crazy and buy out Costco, although am going there later this week to get the new sale stuff. I wonder if I will see people there with hazmat suits on since did see someone with a mask over their face last time there a few weeks ago.

I live as most of y'all know in the Missouri Ozarks. After my meeting today I went shopping. I needed a few odds and ends and hit the West Plains Missouri WalMart. From the looks of the parking lot i thought it were old peoples payday But that wuz a week ago today. Found one of the furthest out disabled parking spots and hung my dangly that permits me to use those spaces. Got into the store and it wuz shoulder rubbin time. Where the Lysol sposed to be were instead a big empty. Same where the bottled water was sposed to be-big empty. Got my few purchases paid out and head over to Aldi. All the disabled spots full at Aldi but got closer in another spot as someone pulled out as i came round the corner. Go to git my cart and over 2/3 of the three rows of carts are out. Go into the store and the first things on the left are the chips of all kinds. I have Never seen that stock That low! I went for a 12 pack of the non diet green tea that Aldi sells and No Joy. Next to no soda and bottled water shelves big empty. Milk case was danged near devoid of milk. Got my few purchases there paid out and i asked the Young Gal behind the register when will they git the next shipment of green tea. She informed the truck had been in early A M and that was it for 2 or 3 days! So thinkin here some folks believe the bull kaka and are panic buying. And i live in semi rural Southern Missouri. I can only Imagine what goin in in a Big Metrpolis. Just sorta an F Y I. RIDE SAFE.

Lab-Made Coronavirus Triggers Debate The creation of a chimeric SARS-like virus has scientists discussing the risks of gain-of-function research. Jef Akst Nov 16, 2015https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/lab-made-coronavirus-triggers-debate-34502Ralph Baric, an infectious-disease researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, last week (November 9) published a study on his team’s efforts to engineer a virus with the surface protein of the SHC014 coronavirus, found in horseshoe bats in China, and the backbone of one that causes human-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in mice. The hybrid virus could infect human airway cells and caused disease in mice, according to the team’s results, which were published in Nature Medicine. The results demonstrate the ability of the SHC014 surface protein to bind and infect human cells, validating concerns that this virus—or other coronaviruses found in bat species—may be capable of making the leap to people without first evolving in an intermediate host, Nature reported. They also reignite a debate about whether that information justifies the risk of such work, known as gain-of-function research. “If the [new] virus escaped, nobody could predict the trajectory,” Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, told Nature. In October 2013, the US government put a stop to all federal funding for gain-of-function studies, with particular concern rising about influenza, SARS, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). “NIH [National Institutes of Health] has funded such studies because they help define the fundamental nature of human-pathogen interactions, enable the assessment of the pandemic potential of emerging infectious agents, and inform public health and preparedness efforts,” NIH Director Francis Collins said in a statement at the time. “These studies, however, also entail biosafety and biosecurity risks, which need to be understood better.” The debate comes down to how informative the results are. “The only impact of this work is the creation, in a lab, of a new, non-natural risk,” Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist and biodefence expert at Rutgers University, told Nature.

https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/11/21156325/coronavirus-pandemic-who-declares-covid-19-outbreak-global-h1n1It's official. Blunt statement. "The WHO continues to closely monitoring spread of the virus", said Tedros Adhanom, director general of the WHO, during the announcement. “We are deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity, and by the alarming levels of inaction,” he said. “We have called every day for countries to take urgent and aggressive action.”

WHO's on first.
What's on second.
Saw my first mask at the grocery store today.
People are piling up the storables. No panic, but lots of big piled up carts. And with every register manned, I got out faster than normal anyway.
No samples at the Costco (I never ever eat that crap anyway).
I went to two stores today (to get my favorite frozen juice), there was very little frozen juice on the shelves, and none of mine. So I compromised and bought two gallons of ice cream. Probably not the same food groups, but both are sweet and tasty.
Whoever said to not go food shopping when hungry was on to something. I'm probably good for two months, except my milk.
Was standing in line with another old guy and we were both politely admiring the young amazonian 6'2" gal ahead of us in running shorts. He leaned into me and whispered..... men age like wine, women age like milk. LMAO, even if it's not nice. Then his wife came back.
