All 9 aboard expired. In the hills above Calabasas Cali. Somebody already mentioned the foggy conditions. Enjoyed at times watching him play. RIDE SAFE.

As said. 9 dead. Low IFR conditions due to fog in the area.  My first thoughts are controlled flight into terrain.

I heard witnesses said they heard the engine sputtering coming down.

Irrelevant to the dead.  There will be an investigation.

Much like Jordan, he was arguably the greatest shooting guard in professional basketball history.  Beyond that, if you can appreciate the pure athletic ability that he exhibited over twenty years of performing on a court, then he was worthy of all the accolades.   What I find remarkable is that other athletes of other disciplines are eulogizing him for his brilliance at his chosen profession.  To me, that is just the height of admiration from peers in the world of sport.

The loss of all those innocent souls that were on that helicopter is no less of a tragedy as well.
May their spirits all rest.  Peace. angel

he was arrested for sexual assault, never went to court because his 19 yr old accuser who claimed rape didn't want to go to court. he was 24 at the time settled out of court with her after she sued him.  he was well know for being with many woman while he was married.

however he did much much good for many, esp where he grew up and the schools he went to, like 400k to build a gym.
he who is sinless throw the first stone.

It is fame and what happens with it by its very definition.

I agree that more should've be made of the deaths of those Marines.  I agree that more than is really deserved is made of and attributed to a sports figure.  He's famous and that's what fame does.

I'm sorry he's dead and the eight with him.  There are maybe several hundred others who died too young in accidents the past few days.  I'm sorry for them and their families also.

Just read the helicopter that crashed lacked a terrain avoidance system. One of the FAA investigators had recommended the system be required on helicopters carrying 8 passengers or more. I believe she made the recommendation 9? years back. The recommendation has yet to be acted upon. And as a Lot of us here are aware-Military deaths generally git short shrift.  Cry True Heroes I M H O wear camo in their every day Profession of arms.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Be careful what you wish for,

Most of the major helicopter manufacturers lobbied against this system.   I understand why, as a former helicopter scout, utility and test pilot, I think it's a waste of time, weight and maintenance efforts.   All a pilot has to do is follow already established rules for IFR and VFR flight.

What I do think should be on commercial aircraft is the black box that large airliners have.   Tells the tale and, tells no lies.

There are too many variables not disclosed at this point for me to make any judgements on this crash.   Some of the reported maneuvers reported do not coincide with good aeronautics that would have or could have avoided this tragic crash and loss of life.

I agree. I really don't know too much about rotary wing, but having an on-board DFDAU should be mandatory for any aircraft carrying passengers for hire. The regulations used in aviation are different, based primarily on the number of seats on that aircraft. Part 91 is for private, civil aircraft and some charter operations. Commercial aircraft, generally speaking, fall under Part 135 (9 seats or less) and Part 121 (more than 9 seats).
These regs determine how aircraft are operated and maintained, including whether they should have flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

Nuff said.

If this were anyone other than someone who made millions playing a childs game likely no one here would have every heard about said crash.
Ok he was a skilled Ball player but he was just a man no more important or less han any man on the street. Yet ESPN and all major news outlets make out like he was the second coming. I just dont get it. He was a man,not anything else,a man whose soul is worth no more than a homeless guy sleeping in the streets.

I couldn't agree more.  I don't wish harm to anyone (except maybe HRC and BHO, and maybe one or two more), but I don't get how KB's unfortunate passing overshadows the other 8 lives that were lost.  The sheep camping out at the staple center, really?  You have nothing better to do?  I could see  where if you were KB's agent, you would be devastated, but this accident has zero effect on my life, other than to make me sorry for the loss of life.  God bless our Marines and the victims of the KB crash.

I agree. I'm still leaning toward disorientation and controlled flight flight into terrain, time will tell. It doesn't appear that there were any problems with the craft.
I've never been a fan of Special VFR, especially in such conditions.
