Gary, I cannot believe or understand it either.
A simple general understanding of (relatively) modern world history would dictate against socialism.
The Nazi's were socialists. The Russians and Chinese and North Koreans and Cubans and Venezuelans were/are socialists. They wreaked havoc and revolution and disarmament and murder/genocide and starvation/privation and world war on their own people, and others. They caused a cold war among the most developed nations with a nuclear (and conventional) arms race (at huge cost of national treasures) putting the entire planet and humanity at risk for multiple generations. They consistently demonstrated failed economies, and staggering government corruption. They deprived their peoples of any semblance of personal freedom and liberty and hope, substituting repression, torture, fear and gulags to work to government satisfaction.
The Scandinavian (and EU) socialism experiments have been the only models with less brutal success, but those are in continuing decline as it is discovered (generationally) that citizens do not need to work or be productive, but only survive on government handouts as a way of life. And the demands of those people (adult children) can only increase over time beyond the ability of any government to fund them to their satisfaction, with eventual failure of economies.
The American experience of revolution to throw off monarchy to create the finest democratic republic in world history, with declarations of fundamental civil rights to all citizens, with all power residing in the people, and free enterprise capitalism is the greatest and most successful model in all of world history (save for slavery which resulted in our own bloody civil war). And a huge industrial revolution resulting in a single nation able to fight a world war on two fronts and win, and the creation of a mass middle class where every man had the opportunity to make anything of his life he could with hard work and determination.
I also blame our education system, but beyond that it seems that we have had it so good for so long (relative to the world), that we seem doomed to some kind of Rise And Fall of the Roman Empire. A widespread assumption that we are too great to fail. That the food and electricity and gasoline and jobs and economy can never fail, and we can afford to gift all things to all people and continue to be the world's greatest economy no matter how much of the national treasure we throw at socialist dreams. With a corresponding corruption of essential values of work ethic, family values, personal responsibility, 10 commandments, seven deadly sins, commitment to nation over self-interest only, and simple right and wrong. The substitute values of toxic political correctness and social justice warriors, and trying to rewrite history, and boys in the girls bathrooms, and open borders, and the UN agenda are utterly false prophet propaganda (created by and for socialists).
Of course socialism did not win in Hew Hampshire, but it did win the democratic party primary there.
And that begs the question; did socialism really win or did Trump Derangement Syndrome win? I have admitted I would have voted for anyone except HRC. And yet I was certain that anyone was better for the country than HRC. Do people honesty believe that anyone is better than DJT? Is it really better to shoot yourself and your country in the foot than vote for DJT? Because a vote for socialism is shooting yourself and your country in the foot, or head.
Since the neanderthal, humans have been a herd animal in both their own AND common interests, with added productivity and security, and better lives for all. The herd has now grown considerably, and been transformed into two political parties (with some abstainers), and we are losing our way.
Does our nation have to completely fail and burn to ashes, privation, starvation, wood fire heat and a zombie apocalypse before we again learn that individual freedom, liberty and capitalism is (once again) the best system possible for human existence?
Please let me die before I find out.

Postscript: Since Marx and Hegel and the advent of socialist/communist theory, committed members of that philosophy have by necessity had to take the long view of reaching their goals. Over time, many of the less brutal aspects of that philosophy have actually been implemented worldwide (social security, millions of laws and regulations governing every aspect of our lives, and many many others). Violent revolution has only worked at the point of a gun, and pretty badly for everyone. Our country's socialists need to step back and stick with the long view strategy, and they'll get a more harmonious result. The people who don't follow socialist/communist theory are not going to be dragged kicking and screaming into compliance with the whole program today, or tomorrow (or before they're ready). So don't make war, make compromise, and be patient.
Our side has not been racking and ruining the country and world, and quit lying that we have, it's not true. It's your side that has the historical track record of failure and oppression. So you're going to have to convince us why that won't happen again. With logic and reason, not militancy. The louder you yell, the more we don't listen.
And you're going to have to lay off the disarmament until the very end.... sorry.
If your plans for us are so good, how come we (the law abiding, working, tax paying vast majority of armed people) have to be disarmed to fully enjoy them? We don't trust you. So amend the constitution if you can, or live with it (and try to earn our trust with some occasional sanity and reason). And BTW, the worse thing you can do to earn our trust is try and take our firearms.
