Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: February 19, 2020, 07:08:50 AM »

Funny what all twists and turns await us along our journey of life! Much of what happens is totally unexpected, yet the surprises are often major leaps forward, rather than the disasters we fear they may become… Sure, we all encounter bumps and bruises, set-backs and disappointments, to be clear, but many times things actually lead to future highlights for the testimonials to be delivered in our eulogies… I wouldn’t change a thing!!!

It was on May 4, 2004, that the judge’s gavel pounded and heralded a completely new chapter… my next foray into the total unknown of an entirely unplanned direction. I was no longer matrimonially engaged, and everything shifted in a frightful way… I’d just spent my entire life up to that point plodding along the well-known path of… a more or less traditional life and lifestyle. No more… From that moment on, life would never be the same… and I didn’t have a clue what that would entail…

Prior to that seminal event, decades of repetition and familiarity had produced a sort of vague comfort in that there didn’t seem to be as many profound surprises to confuse and perplex me… Of course, there were plenty, but at least there was a track record to rely upon to suggest response alternatives and possible choices… Then… in an instant all bets were off! Recently fate has led me back to the place I was before that tsunami had washed me out to sea…

There was a time after special early retirement when my dearly beloved and I lived and… missed the signs pointing to what lay ahead for us… With work no longer draining away all of my mental and physical energy and effort, I had turned increasingly to riding as a suitable pursuit. ALI and I fell in love early in that period, and riding accelerated more than I could have imagined… Even when not on a long ride to some distant corner of our continent, I still rode almost daily.

Visits to various BBQ restaurants around Florida mostly, but the southeastern states, too, had offered me a destination and purpose… A carrot on a stick to prod me to mount-up and head-out. Since I’m at the moment sort of walled off due to rain mostly, from the rest of north America, I’ve fallen back on an old reliable undertaking to keep me rolling and engaged… I’ve re-embarked upon the Great Florida ‘Q’ Quest…

Yesterday, for example, I rode to Keystone Heights, FL, and to Johnny’s BBQ restaurant. The first time I’ve visited that place since before the great exodus from all that had come before… I sat in that booth after ordering and recalled the first time there…

johnnysbbqcatering.com

I’d met Terry & Iris on one of our frequent culinary explorations, and that time we were to be the only ones who made the ride… Florida RTEs were just getting started at that time, so it was always an unknown if anybody at all would show up or if a large group would collect from all directions. The sliced pork had been quite good, I recalled, and I was looking forward to verifying it still was. It was…

I give this place a ‘4.5 Pig Rating’. It is good and well worth a visit… and revisit… I’m spoiled, though, as I’ve visited the Woodyard Grill twice recently, and… well… that place has become the benchmark by which all others will be judged. They have set a very high standard, too!

The first thing I noticed was how ‘fresh’ everything appeared… in terms of the building and interior… Although this place had been open many years before we had discovered it almost twenty years ago, it still looked to be nearly new! Clean and nice… the sort of place one would be happy to take mom to following Sunday services or our kids to for a Saturday-night-out family meal. The staff was very friendly, and the service appropriately attentive without being intrusive… I got a really good vide right from the git-go!

The meal, while quite good, was pretty much standard fare for a BBQ place… not a joint at all, but a good place. The rub and smoking method are good, but not exceptional. Two sauces were offered, sweet and original… both good, but again, not exceptional. I had a worthwhile experience there, and I did very much enjoy the food… and I thoroughly enjoyed the memories!

Today I’m pondering where to go this time… One thing is starting to occur to me, however… I seem to be relying upon revisits to old destinations… We did do a fairly thorough job back in the day of seeking out all the good ‘Q’ places around central and north Florida… even some in south Florida too. I’m thinking, though, it may be time to go find some new ones… so… hmmmm… Reckon I’d better GTS…

I love Q and had several places that were go to’s when I was living in Western Kentucky. Have not really found the same type of restaurants here in the Lexington-Richmond area but I’ll keep looking.

But I do love a great steak and one of the best I’ve ever had while traveling was down in your neck of the woods. The Stonewood Grill in Daytona Beach has a fantastic New York Strip. We wood usually visit it twice during Bike Week which was all I could afford because it wasn’t cheap but if I was in Daytona today I would make a b-line for that place for dinner.

Good post Bruce...yes, sometimes a real hard kick in the pants sets us off on a different tact than we would ever expect, but find out it was meant to be cooldude

During our (or just my) travels whether it be on the bike or for work, I've seen and eaten at more than my fair share of restaurants, cafes, pubs, various types of odd little roadside stands, etc, etc through the years....and yes...this Northerner has even frequented authentic "Q" stops on my more Southerly-reaching trips. I am and always have been a creature of habit when it comes to food choices (the Mrs calls it "boring") in that I pretty much stick to a staple of fish and chicken (grilled or roasted) and without a lot of (any) real spices or sauces for my meat dishes, so I'm certainly no expert when it comes to good BBQ....ya I guess the Mrs would be right about me then when it comes to food choices, eh?  Wink

I do love frequenting these and other similar kinds of places though just to experience the culture of them, especially the smaller ones in the smaller towns the further I get from home where I don't know anyone. I'm not real picky about what I eat as long as it's in my "boring" range of choices, but what I really love about these places is the people I meet...waitresses, cooks, the local cop or mechanic or barber, or the group of church ladies wondering who this bearded stranger is, where he's come from, and (when in the US) how come his money is such a goofy colour. I find it absolutely fascinating  to strike up a conversation with these people and learn a little about the place I'm passing through or even to just watch the interactions of others as they go about their daily business. The food always seems secondary to me. I can appreciate though, guys like you Bruce who seek out the best these places have to offer in terms of a specific type of food (like "Q" or grits Smiley), but I'm pretty sure you and others also know what I mean about this other benefit of stumbling upon unique and interesting places to grab a bite along the road, or to meet up with friends.

Another great thread started by the Brusster.
If anyone I know has such a library of memories, they sure as heck haven't documented it.

Keep on doing what you do so well Bruce.  We love reading about your thoughts and adventures.

Ron,

Thanks, my friend! Yeah, sharing memories and thoughts is... well, it ain't nearly as much fun as making them is, but... I do enjoy that, too. Glad you like it... Ummm, I'm considering doing some more, too..

MSB,

Ya know what, Mike? You've triggered a thought I've been playing around with... and one I think I just might attempt to explore in another thread. In the meantime, your response has definitely struck a familiar chord with me, and I completely agree with your observations! You do have a firm grasp of the real joys of wandering hither and yon... and of drinking in all the wonders beyond the obvious things most casual tourists assume is 'it'... Thanks!

Thanks for the read Bruce. I just spent 2 weeks in Cabo San Lucas and could not wait to get home to some good ole "Q". In fact at the airport I went and bought a double cheeseburger. Was craving it. My wife likes all the seafood and lobster and steak and I do too for awhile but then it seems to catch up to me and is just plain too rich for my stomach and I crave just plain comfort food. It was good to get home. But I did enjoy it.

John,

Yeah, I do stray from the course of Q & Grits only, myself. I, like you, actually have a rather wide range of food likings, and I do color outside the lines frequently... I just make a big deal out of some notable preferences! For example, I do enjoy a good hamburger steak with mushroom gravy, grilled peppers & onions, and... the sides are typically minor considerations.

I'm also partial to a chef's salad, too... but those don't seem to be as dramatic or deserving of a saga devoted to them... Naturally I'm also good with steak, Mexican, and other staples... I'm not much on most 'ethnic foods', though... and I almost never visit any uppity joints of the 'beautiful people'... Not into pretense and show at all...

Are you coming to the Hattiesburg, MS, gathering in April? If so, you can join me in evaluating the Q being specially arranged for those of us who do find that particular food group to be enormously palate pleasing... Should be interesting!

Randy,

Cabo, huh? I've never been there... Actually, I've never been more than a mile or two south of our southern border. Still, I can relate to your 'wearing out' on fancy foods and longing for regular, more typical fare! A good ol' cheeseburger does have a certain charm and appeal, particularly after a long absence... I like seafood, lobster, etc., too, but... regular American cuisine is far-and-away my favorite, and southern, down-home cooking is at the top of the dietary pyramid, IMHO... Let's get together for a burger 'n fires sometime!

Nothing would suit me better than to be there but I haven’t made any reservations yet. Having my ear sewn to the side of my head has extended my recovery time from what I thought would be a minor procedure by 3-4 weeks at least. Going Monday to have my right eye cataract surgery, which if it goes as well as the left eye will be a breeze compared to my ear. If the stars align and I get to come it will be by car which is ok with me . Having not ridden for 5 years, this trip would not be the best to take right out of the gate. The last get together I attended was the ride Rams put together in Bardstown a bunch of years ago.

John,

DANG! Looks like you've got some challenges still out there for ya... Sure hope they can match-up your ears and such...   Cheesy  If you do make it there, though, perhaps we can compare scars and... Nah, I'll be more inclined to attempt to recapture exploits from my misspent youth! Whatever, I do believe the 'twelve ounce curl' to be pretty good physical therapy for what ails us... Come join us if ya can for some 'exercise'!!!   coolsmiley
