It was important that we not win. We, the US, simply had to be successful. There is a distinction. The Afghans are the ones who must get the win. Symbolically, perceptually, and morally. Not the Taliban, the Afghan people. Ending the hostilities and containing the Taliban achieves that and works for me.

I expect to be beaten up on this but to me IMHO

We never had any business there, the al quada came from Saudi Arabia and were safed in Pakistan

Afghanistan is a poor a$$ country dependent on poppie production for many generations,  a place we need not have been just like the ruskies found out.

We did not learn our lesson following the french in indochina and bush fired at the wrong people

Now yes killing the isis and al quada anywhere is always a good thing but did we really think we were going to win the hearts and minds of these people?

I feel bad for those there that we sold a bill of goods and I pray for our people who died and wounded and live with the mental and other scars of that war

This is a good move, whether it will work is another matter,

I have said for decades it took Nixon to open China in an audacious move

It took Trump to do what he is doing now - no less audacious   We are in a better place now for the sacrifices of our troops

Bless them always

If everyone honors the deal, I think it's a good deal.

If the deal is not honored by them, we don't have to either.

If they like the Taliban, let them have them.

I know the Dems would disagree, but lets not let the Taliban come here on student visas (or anything else).

I don’t trust the taliban anymore than I trusted North Vietnam. Peace treaties mean nothing to either one.

Agreed, to win, the enemy must surrender and or submit to our terms.   This has not and most likely will not occur.   The Afghans have been at war with each other and other outside forces for centuries.    The only way to win is to destroy the country.   That is not and has never been our goal.

The only thing keeping the Taliban honest is the threat that we will come back with overwhelming force and destroy them.   We’ll see what happens.

Meanwhile, I ask for and received prayers for my son in law & his outfit and families left behind to deal with their children and every day life being separated while performing their duty for the country. This was right after the dust up with Iran after making a grease spot of the murdering terrorist in Iraq. Since then, he has been in Ft Bliss, Texas preparing for deployment to a not yet disclosed  middle east location.

His whole outfit was chompin at the bits to get out of Ft Bliss and get moving so their actual deployment clock would start & begin the countdown for their tour. With the dust settling over Iran for now, they were redirected toward Afghanistan, where his unit was to go in first to prepare for a larger contingent  of troops to relieve the ones ready to return to the U.S.

Since last weekend, they now sit on the border in Kuwait. Since this development, I suppose our news media would blast any troop movement into Afghanistan all over the world to make the President look like a failure and put the purported peace in jeopardy.

They eventually will withdraw some that have served their tour in Afghanistan and send in the ones waiting at the border in Kuwait. At least his tour is underway finally. I hope & pray the peace will last for our troops sake, but there will never be peace in that part of the world.

He wants to serve his tour and do his part for all this country has done for him and his family, and I want this for him also. Then I hope we withdraw completely and never return to Afghanistan, but I don't believe it will happen.

I say BRAVO for all the sons and daughters willing to serve wherever they are needed (and especially at the pointy end of the spear).    And bravo to your son in particular Signart.   cooldude

I wish him Godspeed.

The French failed in Nam. The Russians failed in Afghanistan. We've already proven we are NOT smarter than the previous failures. Time was on their side in Nam and time is on their side in Afghanistan. Both of those countries KNEW we would git tired of the losses and leave. WHY in the hell were we-United States of America Military Troops there in the first cursed place. Here it is 52 years after I've departed Naval Service and I Still do NOT fully understand the WHY of me being over there other than my Orders. Why oh why have we-U S of A-spend trillions of our money when the folks over in the sand box want Nothing to do with us in the first place? Not everyone in the world wants a micky Ds or a Dairy Queen. For those folks in the sandbox limit their weapons to conventional and let em have at it. Shouldn't be any worse than Chicago or Detroit on a weekend. RIDE SAFE.
