https://www.icepop.com/us-cities-migrating-populations/25/

2 bigger cities are around me few hours away and can see why being Milwaukee WI and Rockford IL people leave both areas due to high crime rate and/or no jobs, etc.  as in Rockford.   Even 1000's from Freeport IL area come up into WI for jobs only some 20 miles away from the border.  Also,  who wants to live in a city where near 50% are afraid they will get robbed on the street as in Milwaukee WI?

Having been to St Louis and Detroit once can see why they are on the list as well due mostly to crime I think?   The one time in the 1990's driving at night thru downtown, right in the main city of Detroit in the winter a bunch of guys huddled over a burning barrel to stay warm wrapped on our car window asking for money - now did not see that coming.  Then again even in Madison WI last summer I had what was probably either a drunk or drug addict middle aged female approach me loading up my scooter full of groceries walking out of a grocery store asking for 8 bucks making up an excuse that her and her friends were saving up enough money to get a hotel room in town - ya right.. coolsmiley

Do any of you more worldly folks living elsewhere find any of the top 25 cities with people leaving surprising?

I find it interesting reading that they say people from say St. Louis and Milwaukee are leaving there to head to Chicago IL but then article says that Chicago is the highest when it comes to people leaving.  Found that comment a little odd.

Not having been to say LA or California in general,  can see why a few cities there made the list as well guessing high cost of living and traffic?

Just starting to think of retirement some 10-20 years away moving to somewhere else AWAY from the normal grid and can see why so many people are considering retiring early say age 60-62 due to many reasons and moving elsewhere.  My neighbor, much to my surprise,  just retired in 2019 only age 62 forcing his wife to work until age 60 when she is eligible to retire having a state job with state GREAT benefits even at a janitor level of pay.   Then again,  he has a sugar daddy son who is super rich that pampers him and buys him stuff his.  He even telling me his son is going to help him pay for land/house, etc. way up in northern WI once his wife retires age 60 only next year.  His son just bought a brand new Honda Pioneer 5 seater UTV loaded to the MAX costing over 20K which is near 3 grand more than our brand new 2014 sonata was.  Then just last year his son bought a loaded new 2500HD duramax diesel crew cab chevy silverado am sure pushing 70K if not more just to haul around his 3 kids I guess.  Is a shame/waste of moola since everything he has could potentially easily be pulled by a 1/2 ton gas truck.  Shame though for now the honda pioneer UTV just sits right now on the property NOT being used I can put a few 1000 miles on it - LOL   Grin   Maybe one day in next 10 years or so my kids will become rich and support me, but doubt it both want to be teachers...   Roll Eyes

I’ve had people approach me for money more times than I can remember in many various locations. It happens everywhere so often I expect to be approached and have answers for the leeches before they even get their hands out of their pockets.
Too bad it scarred you so badly in Detroit 30 years ago, but it is an entirely different place from then.
There has been a lot of re-investment and much of the blight has been eliminated.
Did you read the link you posted?
“Detroit’s overall population has grown slightly”.
I can hear the responses “all cities suck”, etc and that’s fine but the fact is, despite its reputation, Detroit has a lot going on and that’s why people are moving here. Property values are rising, housing in the city is difficult to obtain, and companies are hiring like crazy.
Stereotypes die hard, but the constant Detroit bashing gets really old. It’s better than many of the cities I visit for sure.

Governmental policies about cost of living a big factor also.

The biggest problem though, is the fact that the majority of the folks are leaving long term, liberal run strongholds, because they have become crime ridden cesspools. Then they move to other areas and start bringing their beliefs and ideologies to other areas, start voting in liberal idiots, and changing the place they moved to into a copy of they place they ran away from.

sorry to downgrade Detroit just going from what I saw once over 20 years ago a few miles from GM building downtown Detroit.   I guess being approached for money from strangers either down on their luck or doing drugs/alcohol is common in some areas of the US but in past 30 years of adulthood have only been approached twice ever.    I know I do not get around much in terms of other areas of the US as much as most here though.  Housing market plays a big role on where I or most can live as well.  My same house some 35 miles north in certain parts of Madison WI will fetch near 300K when in 'reality' is only worth 175K tops.   An AP clerk sitting next to me at work who is handicapped in a wheelchair age 55 or so has been trying to find a house in the Madison market he can afford which him and his wife cannot find too expensive unaffordable.  His current residency going down the crapper in terms of living arrangements and crime rate around him in Madison.  He finally found a home in a nearby smaller town 17 miles north near perfect living arrangements for his wheelchair accessibility issue but still having to finance over 15 years he said soon to be newer  house got for 259K (his finances he said limit him to 200K tops to make ends meet which is nearly impossible close by in Madison WI) which he said he is sure he will not live that long (15 more years) with MS and other major health issues becoming an issue more so the past few years.  His wife he said will have to dip into her 401K early age 60 to help afford the new home.  Right now he drives to work ONLY on nice days (no snow since his wheelchair wheels does not go on more than 1 inch of snow)  in his run down handicapped accessible dodge van which is his next major expense.   His mind is sharp but his body/health is failing not sure which is better having healthy mind or healthy body?

These people ruined the great state of Colorado...now they’re doing the same to Texas.  Can you guess what state they moved from?
