I will never understand why people panic over toilet paper in the USA:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ls0ZormAOhU&feature=youtu.be&t=200

Maybe out of this crisis such 'innovations' like the bidet/sanitary shower could find its way to the USA?

I usually keep enough TP around for several months.  I don't go through that much.

I keep some Wet Wipes on the back of the tank for the rare messy times.

I also kept some Clorox wipes back there too, but that turned out to be a mistake.    Shocked

The first bidet I ever saw in overseas bathrooms, I wondered why they went to so much trouble to put in an elaborate drinking fountain right next to the toilet.  The sink was just a few steps away.

We got 3 pallets of toilet paper in last night. An hour after the store opened at 6am half of it was gone. By 9 it was all gone. And it wasn't just toilet paper and water. Panic buying is bigger than I've ever seen in my 48 year career. We sold about 3 times the normal amount of meat today. I'm friggin beat. I sure hope tomorrow is different. I don't know how many customers would comment to me about the craziness of shoppers today, as they themselves would have their basket heaping full.  Shocked Facebook is an amazing tool I'm told, but it sure doesn't help alleviate any unnecessary panic in the readers psyche.

Rob,

So far all the motel rooms I've been visiting have had the usual amount of that necessary item... I keep expecting to encounter shortages there, too... I do have my fingers crossed, however, just in case... Of course, there are always shirt sleeves... but my riding wardrobe is very limited... Geeez, sensible folks can sure complicate life for the rest of us, huh... Hope your workload lightens up a bit for ya!

I noticed that tp is all gone in the stores but plenty of rolls of paper towels are still available.   Paper towels is all we use at the hunting lease     as ya use it you put it in a small garbage can next to the toilet and burn it when full.

I’m really disappointed in President Trump, he has all these titans of commerce around him when he announces the national emergency declaration and not one of them was from the toilet paper industry! tickedoff

I think you should sell and invest in corn cobs, more absorbent and you can soak them in water to soften them up a little.

It was on the TV news about the BIG BOX / warehouse stores being out from the panic buying. I've got one roll on the wall, and 4 others in reserve - maybe it's time to start looking ? Smiley

As a former over the road truck driver I M H O there is NOT a shortage of those small round white rolls-A K A butt wipe. If you've ever been to one of those huge manufacturing plants and distribution warehouses like I have I'm thinkin at this point due to panic purchasing It's now more of a distribution problem. There IS enough product but again due to panic buying the allotted amount per store figured on average usage is now gone. Once the trucks catch up the product Will be back on the shelves. It Is after all a supply chain. Manufacturer to their warehouse to the trucking company to the receivers warehouse to their trucks to their stores receiving dock to the folks at the store off the pallets onto the shelves ready for purchase or the next round of panic buying. I've been to these paper plants in Arkansas Wisconsin Pennsylvania Tn. and other places that I can't recall right now. It is Really simple-if you have it a truck brought it. RIDE SAFE.

Well put - that's exactly what it is - a supply chain problem caused by people panic buying.

So if there is a sudden shortage of an item in demand, does that not cause the price to rise dramatically? The question may be if there is in fact a shortage of TP or is there a sudden case of corporate greed since TP is not on the federal list of items that in an emergency situation are protected from price gouging. I would love a surprise inspection of some regional warehouses to determine if this is a manufactured or actual shortage.

Thanks. I don't know if the grocery industry will have much of an impact, but we are trying. I'm amazed at human nature. I wonder if we are related to lemmings. People are to the point of buying stuff just because they think everybody else is. We had 8 or so people waiting at the doors this morning. Every stinking one headed straight for the toilet paper and loaded their baskets with it. Yesterday's meat sales were four times a normal day. I wouldn't be surprised if today is six times over. Myself and six of my workers busting butt all day, only to have people bitch about being out of something and long checkout lines. I noticed a new phenomenon today. People taking selfies of empty shelves and cases. Is their life so boring they are willing to battle hordes of people just to Facebook pics of empty shelves.

Thanks for letting me rant. I'm very proud of my crew and their hard work.

It is possible that by the middle of next week the supplies are all in the stores and the panic buyers are all satisfied. I am not real sure what the panic for TP is all about. I have no doubt that the panic buying that is taking place currently is a complete surprise to the local merchants and the merchants were not stocked to handle the purchasing exuberance of the lemmings.
I have never given much thought to shutting down the supply chain but it seems to me that if you stopped the trains you have done much more damage to the national supply chain than the OTR trucks. The rail industry is prevented from a strike by law and would be operated by the National Guard if a strike were attempted. A railroad box car carries almost 5 times what a 53' trailer carries, 125 tons.

This will ease.

Especially if the shelves of other products stay stocked.  Panic buying begets panic buying.  Hire a few trust worthy friends to help stock for a few days, there are a lot of folks just sitting around these days.  Bonus your hired hands, $50 means a lot to folks, and give them all a pack of toilet paper.  They are not immune from the frenzy.

This shall pass.  A well stocked grocery store will calm folks nerves.

Best of luck.

Went to an auction yesterday in Lebanon Tn. near Nashville. It was out on a country road, and I heard of the devastation the tornadoes had done in the area, but seeing all that destruction was a real eye opener. I don't see how hundreds of people weren't killed. 2 lives lost there.
We traveled east on Hwy 70 toward home and north of the tornadoes path and the trees , fields and yards were littered with roofing, insulation, debris miles form the path.
On down Hwy 70 heading east toward Cookeville we crossed the tornadoes path again that place is totally flattened. People from all surrounding areas covered the land mass working like ants mostly by hand. Hate to say it, but only 19 lives lost here. Volunteers were in such numbers, they were overwhelmed and had to turn them away. My wife started crying because her health is so bad and she is so weak and can't help.
I doubt anyone there was worried about TP or any virus. We stopped at Sam's to get coffee & cereal and the cashier assumed we were there for TP. They said they had a truck load Sat morning and sold out in 40 min.

It's called a supply chain SYSTEM for a reason - all the components have a part to play. For moving BIG loads - there is nothing like a ship, followed by rail, then trucks. But - the larger the carrier, the fewer places it can go. There's a reason you see many containers and even trailers on railroad cars - it's efficent for the long haul, and it's already broke down for more localized truck hauling. I'm practically across the street from BNSF RR yards - where they put the trains together. It's massive - at least 5 miles long, with double digit number of tracks going across at the widest point (about where I'm at).

went to picnsave yesterday to get a few things and store was pretty much empty but did not take a selfie, but NOT one single roll of TP to be had but some paper towels.   Other parts of shelves and certain sale things we wanted were out of stock as well. Panic will go away in a few weeks and am sure TP will be back on shelves for sure within 1 month.  I have enough TP being 36 rolls to last me a month or more....  Sure hope I am right and not have to steal a roll or two from work...   Grin

I felt like telling that small Chinese dude last week walking out of Costco with 5 HUGE bundles of TP in his shopping cart that he must be so full of crap in his little keester having to have so much hoarding of TP.  That and saw about 10 Chinese people (ONLY ONES in store) while in Costco that had face masks on.   Either they think the masks will prevent the spread or they already had the virus in hopes to prevent spreading it to others?   Gee, thanks for shopping at Costco and either spreading the virus or buying out the stores huge supply of TP.

I did see a worker at Pic N Save right before grabbing a cart coming in spraying with lysol disinfectant all rails of the shopping carts of which I took one of those wipes entering the store to wipe the wet lysol off where you touch the carts.  I feel that is the key in not getting the virus being touchy/feely with objects others have touched.

Just got back from the store.... plenty of TP available, but they were out of bread. Never seen that before...

that is very odd every store (about 4) this past week I visited were all out of TP but had most other items in stock.  Bread and meat were in short supply though, maybe where you live they use other means to wipe?   2funny

Meathead,  thanks for putting up with us meataholics and keeping vigilant cutting up meat to put on store shelves.    I wanted to get chicken tenderloins 1.99lb. on sale at 2 Aldi's I went to yesterday and their entire meat dept. was EMPTY on 95% of all meats.    MY wife instead at Piggly Wiggly got free wine samples and ended up buying on sale 4 bottles of wine for 6.99 per bottle.  She is set for fighting the corona with wine at least?   Roll Eyes

Went into Dollar General for Lotradine and fer yuks and giggles went all the way to the back wall where the t p is Supposed to be. Just a big empty. Then I went over to the grocery store I frequent and the assistant manager and I started talking bout the t p shortage. He informed me that yesterday a local gal he's known bout as long as he's known me came in right after they had restocked some of that white gold every ones buying. She had gotten 4 of the largest pkgs of t p that store sells and was gonna mail it to her Daughter who lives in-ready?-California. Seems as if according to this gals Daughter could not find the bottom wipe she needs anywhere around her area. And this particular grocery store IS currently out of t p too. People-if the world is ending are you REALLY gonna Need T P??  2funny RIDE SAFE.

My keyboard taught me how to get clean if all the TP is gone. I typed 'shift' 7 and saw the guy scooting his hiney across the grass. Voila!
