I'm with you my head brother. I have NEVER liked Dunlops. But I must acknowledge there are many good riders who do like them and have had no problem with them. Kind of like the sundaes I get at DQ every day for lunch. Chocolate only for me, would never touch one of those strawberry things.

I agree, My dunlop d404 130/90-17 rear tire on front only lasted 13k. I was running it backward rotation. Maybe thats what killed the mileage.

I got 16,000 on the front of my IS, normal rotation, but it was noisy and cupped badly, I still have one on my standard and it is also noisy and cupping.  I went with a bridgestone battleaxe on the IS and it is great.  Normal rotation.

My new '98 Tourer came with one of the OEM 'Dunflops'.  With about 6,000 miles the rear tire suddenly delaminated and developed a large bulge in the tread.  I was about 30 miles from home and was only able to get there by taking back roads at very slow speeds.

I called Dunlop's customer service and told them what happened.  The rep said he'd 'make a note of it' and hung up.  It turned out that the problem was widespread, and MCN ran an article on it.

I have no doubt that this was a bad batch of tires, and today Dunlop makes good tires.  But when they failed to stand behind their product they lost me as a customer.

I use the Dunlop D404, 130/90H-17  Rear Tire with Reverse Rotation. I am on my second one. The first gave me 18,000 miles with more to go when I changed it. Plus, it is an inexpensive tire. My new one was $88 dollars installed. Also, I keep the pressure at 42 lb.  Grin

In defense of D404's.  I have been running the front tire for several years.  Get 12-13K out of them.  Due to the majority of roads that I ride are chip coated, that is about all one could expect from any tire.  I do keep the air pressure at 37lbs.  I found that give me the most mileage.

Even the Car tires don't get the mileage they are suppose to (even on cages).

Same here. A safe tread wear (.060 depth) @ 36 psi/15,000 mi. on a Exedra on the front. Presently running a Cobra with 12,000 mi. @ .085 depth left @ 38 psi. Looking to be about the same wear as the Exedra.

My first was a Dunlop K491 Elite II MT90HB17. I got a little over 20,000 miles, but there was a lot of tread left. I changed it because it was 10 years old (it was about 4 years old when I bought it). The tire is discontinued.

[I got 16,000 miles on a Dunlop D404F 150/80-17 (front tire)]

I now have a Dunlop D404 Rear 130/90-17 (68H). Cost was $83.19.

The Elite II after 20,000 miles:

Michelin Pilot ACTIV 130/90V-17 Rear Tire

I got 17k miles while running this rear tire up front. Also this size is a close to stock as you can get to help keep the speedometer in check.

I had a rear 404 and got about 14000 on it.  Can't say I really liked it.  OK on the highway, but it would cause a wobble on long sweepers and driving on roads that had been "rutted" by heavy trucks caused it to wander a lot.  I replaced with a Shinko MC tire and am much happier.  So far the Shinko has been fine and time will tell what kind of mileage.  Since I learned how to change them myself, tire replacement not near the stress it once was.  At least for the front.  Currently running an ATT on the rear with about 14000 and still looks new.

BTW, I read where lots of guys experience speedo error.  Mine is right on the button as checked with the Garmin GPS.  Tire size is 150/80 R17.
